Dr Malcolm Y. Prenderghast
Pathologist

CASE NO. PXC978C675 (CYMBALISTY, ISAAC).

PUTREFIED: NO.

DATE OF INCIDENT: 14/1/269

DATE RECEIVED: 14/1/269

DATE EXAMINED: 16/1/269

LOCATION OF INCIDENT: PXC

GENDER: MALE

AGE: 52 (consistent)

RACE: C1

SCENE:
I first saw the body of this 52 year-old male on 14/1/269, at the address identified as Apartment C, Mimasan Block, Guardian Lane, Perplex City. I arrived at the scene at approx 12:35 and entered the room where the decedent's body was situated. The decedent was seated in an office chair, leaning forward onto a desk, with arms stretched in front along the desk surface. The right cheek was in contact with the desk. A brief external examination revealed no apparent wounds or marks. The decedent's key indicated TOD at 11:50. However, a mug of coffee showed curdling and evaporation consistent with standing at room temperature for approx 16 hours. After assessing the body, I departed the scene at approx 12:50.

EXTERNAL EXAM:
The decedent is clothed in a tweed jacket and coat with a red woollen tie. Shirt is cream cotton. Brown socks. Brown slip-on leather shoes. Jewellery: one watch, one silver enigma ring. Underwear is blue and white striped shorts, urine stained anteriorly over the crotch area and anterior legs.

EXTERNAL EVIDENCE OF INJURY:
Decedent is in good physical condition. No sign of external trauma. Some livor mortis around the right cheek. Slight abrasion to right cheek, from pressure or collapse against desktop.

REMAINDER OF EXTERNAL EXAMINATION:
The unembalmed, well developed and well nourished Caucasian male body measures 168cm and weighs an estimated 75kg. The scalp is covered by thinning white hair, closely cropped. The eyes are brown and equally dilated. The sclerae are white with minor reddening. The nostrils are both patent and contain a small amount of green mucous material. The teeth are native. Three fillings. The tongue is pink and granular. On the right cheek is a pattern of dried saliva. The chest is symmetrical. The abdomen is slightly stretched. Greenish marbling of right lower abdomen. The genitalia are those of an adult male. The fingernails on both hands are trimmed short, edges are smooth. Examination of the back reveals nothing remarkable.

INTERNAL EXAM:
The anterior chest musculature is well developed. No sternal or rib fractures identified.

Lungs: The 800g right lung and 810g left lung have a normal lobar configuration. The cut sections of the lungs disclose an intact alveolar architecture with a small amount of watery fluid exuding from the cut surfaces with mild pressure. The intrapulmonary bronchi and vasculature are unremarkable.

Heart: The 270g heart has a normal external configuration. The coronary arteries are normal in their distribution and there is evidence of atherosclerosis. The myocardium is homogeneous and contains no areas of fibrosis or infarction. The endocardium is unremarkable. The major vessels enter and leave the heart in the normal fashion.

Aorta and Vena Cava: The aorta is patent throughout its course, as are its major branches. Some atherosclerosis is seen. The vena cava is unremarkable.

Spleen: The 198g spleen shows no intrinsic abnormalities. Cut sections are homogeneous and disclose readily identifiable red and white pulp.

Adrenals: The adrenal glands are of normal size and shape. No intrinsic abnormalities are found.

Kidneys: The 150g right kidney and 140g left kidney have a normal external appearance. The surfaces are smooth and glistening.

Liver: The 1450g liver is red brown. Cut sections disclose centrilobular necrosis. Some hepatocytes have a swollen, edematous appearance. Retained biliary material gives a diffuse foamy swollen appearance. Large metallic deposits have accumulated in viable hepatocytes.

Pancreas: The pancreas is its normal shape and size. Cut sections are finely lobular and brown. No intrinsic abnormalities.

Bladder: The bladder is contracted and empty. The bladder mucosa is smooth and grey. No intrinsic abnormalities.

Genitalia: The penis is flaccid and of regular proportions. Some urine staining. No intrinsic abnormalities are seen.

Gallbladder: The gallbladder contains 4-5cc of amber bile. No stones are identified and the mucosa is smooth. The cystic duct, left and right hepatic duct and common bile duct are patent throughout their course to the duodenum.

G.I. tract: The oesophagus is empty. It is lined with grey-white mucosa. The stomach contains 18cc of dark brown fluid with no particulate matter identified. The gastric mucosa shows no areas of haemorrhage or ulceration. The proximal portion of the small intestine shows no areas of haemorrhage. The remainder of the small intestine is unremarkable. The large intestine contains soft faecal material. The appendix is present.

Lymphatic system: no intrinsic abnormalities.

Musculoskeletal system: unremarkable.

Skull and brain: The skull appears to be intact, with no signs of haemorrhage on either the scalp or face. Minimal abrasion to the right cheek just below the occipital area, measuring 30mm. The cerebral vasculature shows signs of apparent liquefactive necrosis. Multiple coronal sections of the cerebral hemispheres, brain stem and cerebellum show this necrosis to be widespread.

MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: Sections taken of heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidney, thyroid and bladder, thymus and brain.

Myocardium: Sections of the ventricular myocardium are composed of interlacing bundles of cardiac muscle fibres. No fibrosis or inflammation identified.

Lungs: The alveolar architecture of the lungs is well preserved. No intrinsic abnormalities are observed.

Thyroid: The thyroid gland is composed of normal-appearing follicles. No inflammatory infiltrate is seen.

Thymus: The thymus gland retains the usual architecture. The lymphoid material is intact. Mild vascular congestion is identified.

Liver: The lobular architecture of the liver is well preserved. Metallic deposits are confirmed as copper. Consistent with prolonged inhalation of copper-based manuscript preservatives.

Pancreas: There is some autolysis of the pancreas, which is otherwise unremarkable.

Kidney: The overall architecture of the kidney is well preserved. No inflammation is detected.

Bladder: The transitional epithelium is autolysed. No significant intrinsic abnormalities are seen.

Brain: Sections from the cerebral hemispheres, brain stem and cerebellum show widespread liquefactive necrosis. Synapses are fused. Consistent with synaptic overload. Loss of consciousness assumed to be rapid. Damage reached fatal levels approx 16-24 hours after initiation.

SPECIMENS SENT FOR TOXICOLOGY: blood, vitreous fluid, urine, bile, liver, lung, gastric contents, kidney, spleen, muscle, brain, heart.

WITNESS STATEMENTS

++++PERPLEX CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT, COLDSEA PRECINCT++++

WITNESS INTERVIEW FORM

CASE NO: PXC978C675 (CYMBALISTY, ISAAC).

DATE: 14/1/269

WITNESS NAME: CAMPA, HEIDI

ADDRESS: Apartment D, Mimasan Block, Guardian Lane, Perplex City

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How did you know Mr Cymbalisty?

He was my neighbour - I mean, we didn't know each other really, but we'd say hello.

Did you hear or see anything suspicious on the evening of 13/1/269?

No. The walls are pretty thick here and he was always quiet anyway.

Did you notice any comings or goings?

No.

Did Mr Cymbalisty ever receive visitors?

I suppose so. I don't know. I've never seen him bring anyone back, if that's what you mean. He was pretty much a solitary guy. I think he worked at the library or something. You know, quiet.

From what you knew of Mr Cymbalisty, do you think he might have been contemplating suicide?

Oh - well, he looked the type I suppose.

DATE: 16/1/269

WITNESS NAME: HEATH, ANNA

ADDRESS: 18 Fisher Road, Old Town, Perplex City

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How did you know Mr Cymbalisty?

We were old friends. I must have known him for 20 years or more.

What was the nature of your friendship?

Purely platonic. Truly. He was more like an uncle than anything else. We both had a passion for language. I suppose that's where it started: books. He had a sincere love for his work.

When was the last time you saw Mr Cymbalisty?

It was a couple of weeks ago now... I'll have to check. He came over to our house for dinner after work. We hadn't seen him over Solstice. I spoke to him by key just the other day. Just to say hello.

Did he seem preoccupied in any way, or worried?

Isaac? Admittedly, he was always something of an introvert, but he was never too worried by the outside world. People never really got to him - he always had this very independent spirit. He had his own life and he enjoyed it very much.

So he showed no signs of suicidal intentions?

Absolutely not. He'd never do such a thing. He wasn't stupid.

Would you suspect someone else was involved?

I know it seems ridiculous... I mean, I can't think who would want to hurt him - but there must have been somebody. He wouldn't just do this without telling me.

Do you think he might have been involved in something you didn't know about? Something he might have been ashamed of?

No... I'm sure I would have noticed. He was a rational man. Rational people don't do this.

DATE: 15/1/269

WITNESS NAME: KITEWAY, SENTE

ADDRESS: Master's Lodgings, Milamont Parade, Perplex City

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How did you know Mr Cymbalisty?

I was his employer. I'd known him as a colleague during my time elsewhere in the Academy.

So were you close?

Not particularly. We didn't mix socially.

Did he have any close friends that you're aware of?

I believe Anna Heath was friendly with him. She's on the Cube Retrieval Project. Outside the Academy, I couldn't say.

So Mr Cymbalisty never confided in you or showed anxiety at work?

Frankly, Mr Cymbalisty and I rarely crossed paths. I no longer have the luxury of spending my time in the library. My role is far more mundane and managerial. If I'd heard of a problem, then of course, I would have spoken to Isaac. But the library was his domain, and it was working well. I had no reason to interfere.

Would you say that Mr Cymbalisty was ever prone to depression or emotional instability?

You're asking if I think he committed suicide. It seems perfectly possible - he was an isolated individual with his own free will. The alternative would seem less likely. But it would be wise not to rule anything out.

WITNESS NAME: MARIEM, JASON

ADDRESS: 19a Ordinal Road, Perplex City

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What was your relationship with Isaac Cymbalisty?

I worked for him, at the library.

Did you get on well?

Sure. I mean, I've only been there a couple of months, but we talked a lot and he really knew his stuff. I liked him... I don't know if he liked me or what.

When did you last see Mr Cymbalisty?

Yesterday evening. We both finished at the same time and we were both walking in the same kind of direction. We crossed the river and walked along Resolution, chatting about work. He turned off up Scholar's Lane and... that was the last I saw of him.

What exactly did you talk about?

The archive, the war exhibit at the Museum... he was a really interesting guy. Once you got him on one of his pet subjects, he'd keep going for hours - fact after fact. Really amazing.

What time was this?

We left the library just after six, so... 6:15, maybe.

Did you notice anything strange about Mr Cymbalisty's behaviour?

Not at the time, no. Thinking back, the strangest thing is that he wasn't being strange at all. Just, you know, normal. Maybe a bit excited, if anything.

Agitated?

No. I mean, it looked like he was keen to get home. It was Friday - the weekend. We were all keen to get home. I never realised what he had planned. I should have invited him for a drink or a game of something... but it would have been a bit weird. I should have noticed.

DATE: 15/1/269

WITNESS NAME: KITEWAY, VIOLET

ADDRESS: Apartment 507, Caesar Building, Mobius Approach, Perplex City

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What was your relationship with Mr Cymbalisty?

He was my boss.

How long had you known him?

Well, at a distance ever since I was a kid. I grew up around the Academy. But I didn't really get to know him until I started working in the library a couple of years ago.

So you knew him well?

I don't think he was the kind of guy anyone knew well. He had pretty well defined boundaries. Still, it was a shock to hear about... all this.

When did you last see Mr Cymbalisty?

At the end of work on Friday. He headed out and I think he was with Jason - Jason Mariem, he works with us. I met up with Jason for coffee later... but maybe you know that.

What time did you meet?

7.30. At Fenlon's.

Are you and Mr Mariem close?

We're friends, yeah.

Why didn't you just go for coffee straight from the library?

I wanted to get changed first, and we kind of live at opposite ends of town.

You wanted to get changed before coffee with a friend?

I don't like going out on a Friday night looking like a librarian... What? Am I on trial here?

Not at all. So when did you leave the library? Was it before or after Mr Cymbalisty?

Just after, I think. I had to take a pile of returns down to the stack. I probably left around 6.15.

Was Mr Cymbalisty acting in an unusual way in the days before he died?

Not really. He didn't seem upset or anything.

Do you have any idea why Mr Cymbalisty might take his own life?

I wouldn't know about any of that.

Was he in any trouble? Did he have money worries or personal problems?

Look - I don't know anything. If Cymbalisty killed himself, I don't know why. And if he didn't... I know even less.

DATE: 16/1/269

WITNESS NAME: KATSOULIS, MIRANDA

ADDRESS: 6 Skyview, Sakai Road, AQ, Perplex City

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How did you know Mr Cymbalisty?

He was my boss at the library.

And how long had you known him?

Not long at all. I only moved to the library full-time in December. He seemed like a sweet man, though.

So you were working on Friday January 13th?

Yes. We had a chat about the cataloguing system in the morning, but I don't think I saw him after that. I'm only a junior there. He doesn't have much reason to speak to me.

So you didn't see him leave that evening?

No - I actually bunked off early on Friday. I wanted to avoid the rush hour heading out of town. I was going away for the weekend.

Yes - with Mr McAllister?

Yes.

What time did you leave the library?

It must have been about five. What time did he...?

I can't comment on that. Did Mr Cymbalisty seem to be behaving unusually in any way?

I don't know. I don't think I even know what 'usual' was for him. And now I suppose I never will. Do you think it hurt, or - how did he do it?

I'm sorry, just one more question. Can you think of any reason why anyone might have wanted to harm Mr Cymbalisty?

None at all. You don't think he was -? Oh - oh my...

No, no, please - are you okay?

I've just never known anyone who's died before - you know, while I've known them. And he seemed so sweet... sorry...

Is there access only for people who called or for everyone? Basically, does everyone have a different password or is it only that one?

I can't get the password to work, and I've tried it with different capitalizations as well.

Nope, it works for everyone, make sure you don't have a rogue space at the end.

Has anyone emailed Kurt and Anna yet?
