Explanation

Honestly - no one has posted an explanation of this question? In it's time it was considered a great problem. The arc is called a brachistochrone, or the path of least time, and is an upside cycloid. check out the math on the Wiki (the real one, not the in-game one). the explanation as to why this is the fastest route is a problem of differential calculus to satisfy Fermat's principle, which says that the "brachistochrone curve is simply the trajectory of a beam of light in a medium where the speed of light increases following a constant vertical acceleration (that of gravity g)." it's actually quite interesting, more so than just guessing the answer.
