Name Meanings

I just found this out, and it was just too interesting to keep to myself. I searched extensively to check if this had come up in the past, but oddly enough it had not been noted.
So anyway, I was researching name meanings for something I am writing, and discovered that the meaning of the female name, Monica comes from Greek, and literally means Advisor. I thought it was quite a head slap worthy moment.
Could Mind Candy have hidden hints in character names? I thought this could be a place to post interesting (and hopefully relevant) findings!

There might be something in that...perhaps that give us hints as to certain aspects of some characters. See my Miranda slanda here

Excellent point, ryandrew Smile Now I feel silly for not noticing - I studied Classics quite a bit in college.

Miranda is a fabulous character, though perhaps not heroine Razz (as an ARGer, how can I not adore the play?) Her name, actually, is quite appropriate..

Names are always crucial in any story/game, even if there is no *intentional* allusion - there's always an underlying or unconscious influence behind the selection of the name. May only have meaning for the author sometimes, though.

Sente, obviously, is a meaning-laden moniker. There are several threads about that in the archives.

Violet and Scarlett also have significance - mother was probably Rose or something Wink

Cyrus is roughly "Sun," though of course that's not his real name. So perhaps he's a relative or incarnation of Helios Noi Razz

Interestingly, Cinelli means "cymbals" in Italian. Sounds a bit familiar Wink

Other linguistically interesting names (though most seem strung together from various international dictionaries):

Helix Hesh
Caine (Tristan? Razz) Johanneson
Aetiant and Naskent (grooooaan) Taversen
Salvant Castille (another groan)
Kostka
Joya/Aurora Belle/Satine Noir/other precious stage names
Anyone with math/science names (Candace Leibniz, etc)
Cestmir Zafferin (Zaffer is a cobalt mineral pigment, and "zafer" is "victory in turkish, though the relation seems a stretch; Cestmir apparently is Czech for "fortress," but baby name lists are notoriously inaccurate)
Edith/Edyta
Inari Ekeba
Azad - Azad Park, Candace Azad, Patrick Azadian (esp. in context of Iain Banks' books)
Hesketh Zeller, Hesketh Shearness ("from the horse racetrack")
Juniper Onego

ugh, okay, I guess I'm proving my point. Too much potential significance! Wink

Oh good. I'd was hoping something like this would come up. How about placenames? Like, say, "Viendenbourg"?

I idly googled for "Vienden", wondering what it was the town of. I got exactly nothing, but Google, bless its little cotton socks, asked me if I meant "Vrienden" instead. And I got this. . I believe the word is "ba-na-na". Cool

So "Vrienden" means friends. But without the r. Which makes Viendenbourg the Village of Fiends, which makes sense given all the boding in Scarlett's blog. This only becomes really significant, though, if something similar is going on in the name "Anjsbourg". And I don't think it is.

It's all interesting, though. Twisted Evil

Hmm, I can't see any castles in that link.
