PUZZLE: Crossword clues

Caretaker said that Reggie is cutting out crossword puzzle clues and handing them over. Here they are:
Quote:
3. 1944 Priminger classic 16. WWW destination
22. Coffee break hr. 20. WWII prez
5. Keep late hours 8. Slangy assent
6. TV preview 12.Hard-to-hit barn area?
22. Coffee break hr. 18. Excited shout
11. Pygmalion monogram 5. Tarzan counterpart

The clues are grouped together like that, in 5 sets of two, and were given to Caretaker in that order.

Crossword

Two things:

1. The across/down sequence of a normal crossword puzzle is mixed up in Reggie's clues:

3D 16A
22A 20A
5A 8D
6D 12D
22A 18D
11A 5D

2. If you put just Reggie's words into the crossword, and take only the letters that are shared by two words in the grid, you get:

STYBRRA

Do either of these things mean anything? I haven't the slightest...

Washington times Crossword link

The clues were taken from the Washington Post (oops, not the Times, mea culpa)

per Drizjr: here's the puzzle http://crosswords.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/crosswords/daily/front.htm

Just remember it was from the October 14th puzzle.

I am not too good at crosswords so i posting my idea.
Match Marcus' clues to the clues on the Coyote Dispatch xword puzzle.
See if there are in similarities. Since the title of the Washington Post xword is "Court Action", I am thinking the solve will have something to do with our lawyer friends.

Also, think in terms of puzzle planning, the PMs would never know what puzzle would be posted on the exact day this in-game puzzle would be launched, so the solution must have something to do with a static aspect of a xword puzzle. The grid, coordinates, something like that.

The problem with this, and sorry for poking holes but we need to look, is that one of the words, WHOOP, doesn't have another word crossing it, and one word (22Across, TENAM) is used twice, so there is probably
something significant in that.

I have found "url http ... mirror... net or org" but we don't have enough of the right kind of letters to give us cfrg.us/mirror, so even my own idea has a big gapping hole in it.

Um... spooky kid just pointed out the #5 used twice ...but wait, the clues are from different puzzles![/b]
*** EDIT***
My bad, one is across and the other down.

I was thinking about the coyotedispatch puzzle... there are only two that doesn't match up (5 across and 18D). However there are 5 down and 18 across) Here are the clues that correspond to the same numbers:

3D: 3. Look secretly 16A: 16. Click beetle
22A: 22. Banister parts 20A: 20. Actor Luke
5A: N/A 8D: 8. Convent heads (5 down is 5. Southern state: abbr.
)
6D: 6. City of David 12D: 12. Potpourris
22A: 22. Banister parts 18D: N/A (18across is 18. Trace)
11A: 11. Mohammedan 5D: 5. Southern state: abbr.

don't know if that helps, but that would mean that someone would have to work on the coyotedispatch crossword puzzle to figure it out?

Possible handle on a solve

In chat, Spookykid came up with this interesting link which just might lead to a solve.

If we use the letters that have numbers listed above them for the code we have the following numbers identified

3 (L), 5(S), 6(T), 7(A), 8(Y), 9(U), 10(P), 11(G), 12(B), 13(S), 15(H), 16(U), 18(W), 20(F), 21(H), 22(T), 23(E)

And yes, I realize that several letters a duplicated. I said it was a handle, not the key for the lock... Rolling Eyes

Quote:
<Magesteff> So if these are the code for the cipher, then are the numbers of the clues the ones we need to solve for or do we only have half the puzzle at this point?
<spookykid> half the numbers of the clues, while the other half are the ones to be solved for.

OK Gang we are back in business, get crackin'

Grumpyboy picked up on Caretaker saying that Reggie had access to spirituality and self-help books, and wondered if the clues might be Bible-related. You could use the first number in each set as the chapter, and the second as the verse. It's hard to find one book of the Bible that has enough chapters (with enough verses in them) to fit all the clues, but Revelations has all 6 chapter/verses as numbered:
Quote:
3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

The first clue Caretaker quoted was "3. 1944 Priminger classic 16. WWW destination". Keep in mind that John 3:16 is probably the most quoted verse of the Bible. It's the one that people put on bumperstickers and that the crazy rainbow-afro-wig guy promotes at ball games:
Quote:
3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Looking along the lines of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) there are a few quotes that would be considered fairly famous. However, there are 6 clues and only 4 gospels, so it didn't really seem to me that it matched. You might find something else, though.

Remembering the furor about the Bible Codes of a couple of years ago, I did a search on them and found a quote I thought bore repeating:
Quote:
When Drosnin finds a name or word match for a given step value n, he then rearranges the letters into a huge matrix (which he calls a "crossword puzzle").

They set up the "crossword puzzles" like the one found here. There's more information on Bible Codes on this page.

If I'm not around later when Caretaker's around, could you please ask him if Reggie's been reading the Bible? And if Caretaker could hand Reggie a Bible to see what he does with it?

ETA: While I was writing this post, "Hey Poor" by Front 242 and "Personal Jesus" from Depeche Mode both came on my mp3 player, and I got a spam from a guy named Jesus. Weird.

ETA part 2: Ok, "Just Like Heaven" came on right when I hit "Submit". I think I need to go to church or something.

Crossword Chess

Just in case someone sees something we missed:

Spookykid, Drizjr and I tried to look at the puzzle answers as if they were chess moves, or pieces. It was translated into hex, and nothing.

Just for the record other attempts by people included translating the numbers into alpha, translating the crossword answers into hex, binary, ascii, caesar, the dutch crossword crypto program, rotational...

has anyone else got an idea for us to try? anything we have missed?
