Sunday Telegraph 26th March Puzzle Supplement

Well, I got up especially early for this only to find out it's a card I've already got Sad

Middle pages of the Seven supplement have puzzles taken from other cards (like last time) and also a big picture of yellow card #80 Cruel and Unusual.
There is an advert/puzzle for the Perpelxcity Police phone number, a letter from Whipsmart, address of quirky acuity & scarlett kite, letter from Hesh records.

Will try to post details in a bit....

One Sunday morning a priceless heirloom was stolen from the Farthinton's family home. the police were immediately called and upon arrival began questioning the staff as to thier alibis :

The Gamekeeper claimed he was in bed resting his back after the game yesterday.

The Cook claimed she was preparing lunch.

The Gardiner claimed he was trimming hte hedges.

The Maid claimed she was getting the mail.

The Butler claimed he was polising the silverware.

The police instantly arrested the murderer. Who did it and how did they know?

Dear Mr Kiteway,

we recently took an order for ice-cream from your office. We're having some difficulty matching up the order to the person however.
Could you tell us who wanted which flavour and in what order the transactions were made?

The details we have are:

We know that Tippy hates Rummy Descartes, as we heard her say whilst Aiko was being served first.

Although Aiko thinks Isaac Neapolitan is the best flavour, she decided to try a different one, as one of ht emen was palnning on ordering that flavour.

Kurt ordered Piquant Pecan, and Von, who ordered immediately after, didn't order Cube Berry.

The last person to order was male

The letter from Scarlett is taken from one of the cards....the one where you had lists of words and had to match the year...Buzzword maybe? (not got my cards to hand)

There's also the naughts and crosses puzzle

Perplexcity Police Department

Citizen : do you have what it takes to be a PXDPD Volunteer?
Tackle this puzzle and give us a claa.

Remove all of these numbers to reveal our number

Anything larger than 3 on the smallest grey circle
Anything larger than the product of two consecutive primes whose sum is 5
All square numbers greater than 1
The number of trunks on an elephant from all but the outer circle
The number 3 on the outside circle and it's opposite
The number of points on a pentagon on all the red circles

The numbers are in a shield on the left....will try to describe as best I can without a scan

Inner cirlce is red with numbers 1, 2, 5, 8
Next is grey - 2, 7, 4, 3,
red - 3, 8, 1, 9, 5, 6, 4, 7
final outer circle - grey - 1, 6, 8, 7, 5, 3, 4, 9

Hope that makes sense to someone!
Sorry for any typos, but I blame lack of sleep! Shocked

I bought the paper. (So I can have another mini poster on my wall!) I'll try and get my scanner working and I'll post the scans.

Heh! The riddle from earth one is nice, easy, but nice.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The maid did it because it was a SUNDAY. [Mr Dursley] "No post on Sundays!" [/Mr Dursley]

Not entirely sure if this thread should be in META. Shouldn't it be in Puzzles?

Also, on the irddle from Earth - unless it has been transcribed wrong here, it says there was an "heirloom stolen", but goes on to call that person the "murderer"

OK, after taking the appropriate numbers from the police shield, the remaining numbers read from top to bottom to give the PXCPD number as:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
0208 133 2265

When you call you hear the following message

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"You've reached the PXCPD. We're sorry, all of our reporting lines are busy. We've seconded extra staff to take your calls. Please hang up and try again. Your vigilance is inportant to us.". The message ends with a beep, so it may be an answering machine. What message to leave, though?

Solution to the ice cream logic problem:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
First was Aiko who ordered Rummy Descartes,
then Tippy had the Cube Berry,
Kurt asked for Piquant Pecan,
and finally Von went for the Isaac Neopolitan...mmm, Neopolitany.

The problem with the scrambled pyramid message is that

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
every pair of characters (including punctuation) has been reversed

Once the whole thing has been untangled, it reads:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A bunch of us in research are talking about having a pyramid night on Thursdays just over at Brain Benders. Who would be game?

You know marketing hosts poker up on the 7th every Thurs, right?

I forgot all about that, Steph, tell Yusef I'm sorry, OK?

The research team got together and we'll move pyramid to Mondays, still at BB. Anyone is welcome.

I assume the answer to the riddle from Earth is

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The maid did it. She claimed she was getting the mail, but the crime was committed on a Sunday morning, so there wouldn't have been any.

However the bit that bothers me is that at the beginning of the puzzle we're told it concerns the theft of an heirloom, yet at the end we're told the police arrest the murderer. A mistake or something more significant?

And it's good to see Violet's version of the Monty Hall Dilemma. I wouldn't have thought it would give Sente too much of a problem though!

Didn't know where to put it so thought META would be the best bet. Feel free to move it if I've made a mistake

Just found out that:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The number is the same as the one for the attack on the police system here (just thought I'd check, didn't realise I posted it in the first place, LOL)

EDIT: I got the same message, probably due to what I just posted in the spoiler. Can anyone confirm if its the same message as before? Also it rang for a LONG time before going to the answer machine, could it be worth checking again later, or tomorrow? To see if someone turns up.

When you call you do hear the message, but you get a bleep at the end. I am fairly sure that we didn't get the chance to leave a message last time, that it just cut off. As they are specifically asking for volunteers, I have left a message, volunteering, giving my telephone number and address. I thought it was worth a try!

Idea I just noticed that in the "Riddle From Earth" the word was is missing from the line:

Quote:
The Butler claimed he polishing the silverware.

All other lines contain the word.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Idea The butler is the murderer.

I think the answer to the riddle is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Butler - especially if it is a murder - my reasoning is he is cleaning the silverware which was used as the murder weapon and removing any trace of blood / finger prints

But all the typos who knows
