[UPDATE] Sentinel - March 28, 2006 - Accusations

Quote:

Reconstructionist Accuses Cult of Stealing Cube
By WILHELMINA BEST

A woman calling herself only Kostka has contacted the press and police saying that she has inside information that the Reconstructionist religious group stole the Receda Cube. Police have identified Kostka as Jessica Holyoke, an Old Town woman who, according to police, moved permanently into the Reconstructionist compound outside the city about a year and a half ago, a few months after the Receda Cube vanished from its place in the Academy Museum.

Kostka's statement read, in part, "I know I should celebrate the Cube's liberation from the unbelievers at the Academy, but my conscience suffers because there was a death that night. It is time for someone who knows the truth about what was done in love and faith to step forward."

Police chief Eoin Morgan said that Kostka has been taken into police custody for her personal safety. "We plan to take this fresh accusation against the Recons very seriously," said Morgan. "I personally feel there may not be a case here, though. We've been down that road already and came away empty-handed." Morgan referred to the long investigation of the Recon 8, regarded as leaders of the cult, who were held by police for just over four months under heavy suspicion of involvement in the theft of the Cube. The police have said that despite compelling motivation and some circumstantial evidence, they are now convinced the Reconstructionists had no involvement in the theft.

A Reconstructionist spokesman who refused individual identification made this statement: "We understand the motivations that are driving Kostka to make these false and unmerited statements. Kostka has been through a very difficult year, and is approaching the anniversary of the death of her husband. She is also in the third year of her faith, which is often a difficult transition period for worshippers who come to us as adults. ... To Kostka, we would like to say that we still love and accept you, and we urge you to come home to our retreat where we can care for you and help you to move past this turbulent time."

Academy and Centre for Reality Research teams have determined that the Cube is now located on Earth, though they have been unable to pinpoint a specific location. Police continue to investigate the events surrounding its theft and the murder of security guard Fran Mendling the same night. No charges have been filed.

Leaders Gradually Emerging from Pack
By KATE BREWSTER

Tally remains at the top of the leaderboard for a second week, closely followed by Gibbet and Ramazel. The three players have earned 7144, 7044 and 7026 points respectively. After Ramazel is a 32-point gap before number9dream and oliverkeers13, who are tied for 4th place. The pack that had once shared domination of the board has now slipped down to 10th place, where 56 players are tied with 6944 points.

The last week has seen player numbers jump to over 19,500, as over 500 players have joined through various online and magazine promotions. PCAG statistician Samara Jones remarked, "I'd expect these numbers to grow even faster as the general public on Earth becomes more aware of Perplex City. ... Both the competitive nature of the leaderboard, as well as the opportunity to help us find the missing Receda Cube, will no doubt lead to substantial changes on the board over time."

The top new players of the week are Rifflesby, girlwithnolife and Boojum, who have accrued 3710, 2264 and 1880 points, respectively. Over the last month, the top new players have been chimera245, GamesU and bertyuk, with an astonishing 6926, 5452 and 5253 points, respectively.

Internationally, the UK is still in the lead, with Ramazel from France the highest-placed non-UK European player and Hunting4Treasur in 10th place the highest-ranked US player. Academy officials are growing concerned at the number of unexpected countries at the top of the leaderboard, with many suspecting that Gibbet and oliverkeers13, for example, are not, in fact, from Zaire or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The Academy refused to comment on whether this matter would be pursued further.

To date, 3,734 leitmarks have been awarded in the red, orange, yellow and green categories combined, with over 10% of players earning a red leitmark. So far, no one has been awarded a blue leitmark. Both the Academy and Mind Candy have declined to reveal at what point level these will be awarded. Of the 5,171 players who have given details on their profile pages, almost one third are female, 21% are from the UK, 4% are from the US and 1% are from Australia. The most common age is 26, with the top twenty most common ages lying between 17 and 36.

Three Wave 1 and 2 cards remain unsolved: cards #238, Riemann; #243, Shuffled; and #251, The Thirteenth Labour. Mind Candy and the Academy have confirmed that card #238, Riemann, does require proving the Riemann Hypothesis. Caine Johansson, from the Academy's Cube Retrieval Team, has commented, "All of us on the team are very interested to see which Wave 3 cards will keep the players guessing as long as these have."

Publisher Deal Close

Inside reports indicate that the Sentinel is very close to reaching an agreement with Douglass Arroyo, currently publisher at the Finance Observer, to come in as the Sentinel's new publisher. The Sentinel has been without a formal publisher since former publisher Lauren Grove was dismissed last August on charges of employment discrimination.

Futures
By Madame Bianca, for the week of March 27

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
All of that running and you never get anywhere, do you? I think if you take a hard look at yourself you'll find you're back where you started. Try to remember the things that are important to you, like your friends and your family.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Well, I'm pleased with how things are shaping up for you. Pity about the terrible misunderstanding on Wednesday, but at least it'll be sorted out by the weekend. Unless, you know, it isn't. Anyone's guess, really.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
How is your garden growing? Bulbs up yet? Now is a good time to prune roses, transplant trees and shrubbery, and start some vegetables from seed indoors. Even if you don't have a lot of space to plant, it's important this year to make the most of what you have.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
Love hurts, muffin. It may seem now like you don't know which was is up, don't know who to believe, don't know what's in your heart, but it's perfectly obvious to the ones close to you. It would help to squash down your pride and ask for some advice.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
You find salty foods invigorating this week, but careful not to overdo it. It's amazing the affect diet can have on one's health, isn't it? But too much of a good thing leaves you too much at the mercy of your bladder.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Oh, please, it's too early to bring out your skin-baring summer wardrobe. Spare yourself the indignity of your dry winter flesh in display for at least another few weeks, all right? The whole city will thank you, as will I personally.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
Your holiday was a little too hectic, and now you're wishing for another one. You need to learn to pace yourself, darling. Try to cut down on your demanding social obligations through the rest of the week. You need to consider your health!

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Throw yourself on the mercy of fate this week. No plans, just float where the wind blows you. You will be pleasantly surprised at how well it turns out for you, just this once. There's something magnificent waiting t the end of the week that won't happen for you unless you leave yourself open to it.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
A beautiful week ahead, and spring is always a nice time to make fresh starts. You owe some apologies, and don't think you can hide it from me. If you make them by Thursday afternoon, they have a much better chance of being well-received.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
The Road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow, if I can, pursuing it with eager feet, until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Your recent foray into success turns sour this week when you totally lose motivation to keep forging ahead. Responsibility is a real downer, isn't it? Your stuck now, hot stuff, people are counting on you. You can bow out gracefully when this phase is over.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Ever get the feeling that somebody is watching your every move? You know, the tingly feeling at the back of your neck? No? Well, maybe you should have that feeling. No reason in particular.

And remember, not everything of worth can be measured.

Letters section too...although I am reliably informed that this was updated on Friday(?), I can find no sign of it on UF.

OTHERWORLDLY CUISINE

I was pleased to note that 'seafood is the entree of choice for diners this spring.' As an avid seafood fan (my home town is a fishing port) I thought I would share one of my favourite recipes. Best server with a light white wine this one always pleases and provides a warming start to any meal. I do hope you will publish it for the citizens of Perplex to read and, hopefully, enjoy.

Calamari Salad

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Ready in: 25 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients:
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 cloves garlic, pressed
1 cup dry white wine
1 cup water
1 pound squid, cleaned and cut into rings and tentacles
1 cup chopped celery
1/2 bunch chopped fresh cilantro
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 yellow bell pepper, chopped
1 cup chopped cucumber
1 bunch fresh green onions, chopped
1 bunch chopped fresh parsley
1 cup jicama, peeled and shredded
1 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped

Directions:
1) In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, red wine vinegar, and garlic.
2) In a medium saucepan, bring the wine and water to a low boil. Stir in the squid and cook until opaque, about 2 minutes. Drain and cool.
3) In a large bowl, mix the celery, cilantro, green bell pepper, red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, cucumber, green onions, parsley, jicama, and jalapeno. Toss gently with the squid and the olive oil dressing mixture. Chill until serving.

SENTINEL PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

Colin Clark, Earth wrote:

Vanity, thy name is Sentinel. How could you people have conscienced to award Letter of the Week to a missive so lacking in substance as magicmancraig's? Surely your editorial staff have better judgment (I know I've seen more worthwhile articles than not) and more stable egos than what allow them to print this piffle? Michiko? Gunter? Ilja? If you would like me to tell you you're smart and attractive, I'll say it. But I don't expect to see such self-congratulatory drivel put up on the front page. Flattery will get you nowhere, and false flattery will do you in. I would like to see a little more credit given to honesty over empty platitudes in future pages.

Whilst the View from Earth column in your newspaper has received mixed receptions from Perplex City residents, I personally believe it is an excellent idea. With your readership increasing from Earth, would it not be prudent to perhaps have a 'View from Perplex City' column as well - to help us Earth people understand more about your culture? We on Earth have many questions about the differences and similarities between Perplex City and Earth, for example: What is your solar system like? What lies outside Perplex City? How does your economy compare to ours? What is Perplexian food like? I could go on for a long time... and not all questions could be answered by a single weekly column, however, any small snippets about life on Perplex City you would care to share with us would be of great interest to your avid Earth readership.

Once again, many congratulations and all the best in the future.

Thank you so much for providing Earth with such a quality newspaper. I recently became one of the Perplexed and I had no idea of where to start. Luckily with the help of your paper, I was able to look into the archive and understand what was going on. You all do a good job of keeping new users in the loop as well as old ones, thanks again for helping this young searcher on his way to finding the Receda cube.

Oopsie. Me bad. Those 56 players are now in 11th place.

*jojojojo sniggers evily.

Jessica Holyoke again, eh? The plot thickens. This will require some in depth reading. Methinks we are being given a prod here. Bernard Holyoke was the man who owned "The Five of Cups" bar. Full info here

Oh, and the Apple Thief quotation this week is from some fella called John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, who I believe wrote some film scripts a while ago.

J

P.S. It's from Lord of the Rings - more detailed information can be found here

I have a feeling that the mention of Fran Mendling might be the way to go with regards to Scarlett's question. We don't know much about her death, and this might make Claire open up about what it is that really happened on the night of the theft.

Once again, the Sentinel and Madame Bianca are conspiring to give me aneurysms. Four more blatant typos/grammatical mistakes in the Futures (besides the typo in one of the small articles last time). I'm keeping track chronologically, but no secret message has yet appeared Razz

and because there is such heavy back plot on this kostka issue, here are some hopefully useful insights.

The Sentinel fFirst reported on Holyoke being fFound dead. Just think! If he had played it cool, he would still be alive, we probably wouldn't know anything about him, and a lot of the theft would still be something of a mystery! http://www.perplexcitysentinel.com/archives/2005/04/five_of_cups_ow_1.html

The sentinel later reported Jessica had been fFound. She was of no use to reporters or police. http://www.perplexcitysentinel.com/archives/2005/05/holyokes_wife_l_1.html

This spurred Violet into thinking the police were being real pansies, and so she decided to take matters into her own hands.
She goes: http://www.quirkyacuity.com/archives/2005/05/recons.html
She comes back: http://www.quirkyacuity.com/archives/2005/05/yesterdays_visi.html

This led Violet to go back a second time, to get privvie information, which outted Aiko and others as recons. It's heavy plot material, which you can read up here: http://www.quirkyacuity.com/archives/2005/06/index.html

Then, in parallel to these things, Pietro Salk was conducing his own investigation. We (at length) discovered what he was discussing with Monica Grand, "The Advisor", in what has become known as The Salk Logs. They are collected fFor your reading on the wiki. The relevant bits which reference Jessica would be just under here: http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/index.php/Salklogs.doc#Research_and_Dead_Ends

Here ends the fFacts.

Here begins the speculation.

I'm given to agree with Chief Morgan when he says he doesnt think there is much of a case here. It's nice to hear fFrom ol' jessica, but Pietro and the police have all come to similar conclusions: The recons didn't do it. The recons are not to be trusted, certainly. Even Sente panicked when he fFound out Aiko was one of Them. But I don't really think they stole the cube. Being eccentric does not equal being evil.

Or else, they hid their tracks *VERY* well.

There is a possibility lying dormant here which one can fFile under heavy speculation: The recons hired V to hire some people to steal the cube. The recons themselves did the theft in some subversive way, such as with Aiko. But there is a big glowing edifice of conspiracy layered over all that so we look at Q & V & C & K and the third power. If you really wanted to invest in conspiracy, you could tag the Salks on to it as well, but that's quite a reach. Anyway, that would explain what monica meant when she said "It was already gone."

remember what i said one post up, about holyoke playing it cool? If he had kept his head down and not tried to cross V then we wouldnt ever know a thing. fFor that matter neither would Salk. And we would have never really thought to fFollow the rabbit down the hole. It's almost as if we were *supposed* to fFollow that lead. Well gee that's handy!

I don't know if I entirely believe my own little speculation, here, but it sure seems plausible.

[spec]Could Bernardo have left some form of message to his wife that she has recently discovered, containing information on the cube theft? It seems like this accusation suddenly came out of nowhere, but to come from Q's wife, it seems all a bit too coincidental. Finding out what she knows may be beneficial. [/spec]

Anyway, maybe our way to talk to Jessica is to get Anna's husband to do it (if she'll trust us, that is.) What kind of privileges and access within the building would he get? Incidentally, I don't think we're likely to gain access by subverting systems again. Still, there must be some to be a way to talk to her...sending Kurt or Violet in as representatives of the Recons? Maybe even getting Recon members like Aiko to go?

Maybe that should be our jumping off point for the ongoing investigation? Do we have a contact detail for Aiko or would we need to get Violet or Kurt to approach her? (Actually, Kurt would be a better bet considering Violet and Aiko's past history...)

As much as I would love to have another contact in PxC, I don't think Aiko is the way to go. Firstly, we don't know her. Secondly, I don't personally trust her. Whats to say she doesn't go running back to the recons? Aiko seems to be a rather clever person, she'll want to know why we want to question Jessica. She won't pootle off, do as we ask and report back. She'll ask questions, and frankly, do we want to give her answers?

You can still access the internal pages of the police website using the volunteer access code. The only new thing on there at the moment is:

Quote:
Possible sighting of Alan 'Al' Maskovicz near Hardcastle Docks, approx 3am on 14 March. May have removed facial hair.

which isn't very useful. No mention of Jessica but it might update in the future.

don't forget that 'missing' blog that she put up directly after one of the recon visits and then pulled just as quickly. the forum post is here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=162634#162634 since the quirky acuity link obviously wouldn't show anything.

i think kostka/jessica might be vaguely telling the truth. we know it was V and the 3rd power who stole the cube, rather than the 'recons' but maybe what she means is that the 3rd power are just the higher up branches of the recons and its all interlinked. she was a recon before the cube was stolen, maybe this is how bernard holyoake got involved in this, and she wants revenge for her husband's death at their hands - but she knew the police wouldn't do anything about it (maybe she also has information leading her to mistrust certain police officers who after all, hushed up the search of the pub) so she went to the recon compound to work her way up the ladder and get answers/evidence for herself?

i don't reckon the lower down bog standard recons (including the famous ones we know about) are evil or know anything but who knows if the leadership structure is a little corrupted? maybe aiko even has suspicions about them and thats why she was researching the 3p stuff at adamek's house?

rach =)

Is the consensus that we wait for the police site to update or is there anyway we can get Violet in to talk to her?
