Player faking information - arrrrg!

I just started a thread regarding the barcode information on card #077 only to find that another player planted information online (registered one of the barcodes with fake information) for his own amusements. I wasted some time in trying to sort this out only to be told, by the perp, that he made it up. Check out the barcode 8 07297 07931 9 on Google and you'll find a record about the Receda Cube: the mystery of it's origin. It's not wildly evil and he did cop to it when I posted but how long before someone else thinks it's fun to send potentially 20,000 on a wild goose chase?

Do we have an online gulag for such nonsense?

We don't punish here, but we do frown upon the practise of ARGjacking, a similar occurance was a few months ago, when a player decided to create a character following it on earth, so he played his own character. The players didn't know whether it was real or not, and got a bit angry. The biggest problem is a waste of resources and time. I'm surprised that Sasuntsi hasn't learnt by now, having been around for a while, that it's not good practice.

Now that all that's sorted, can we merge the threads to prevent congestion? Preferably in Questions/meta? Thanks.

Not a bad idea that.

well, offhand, I quite like the idea of people making their own little carvings in the world in edifice to PxC. I mean, ultimately, the wiki and the card catalog and PxCTrades and all those are essentially along the same lines, sorta. The difference is of course the goal and usage. But then, I've seen the wiki cited by new players, who think, at fFirst, it is in-game.

Actually I quite enjoyed reading The adventures of Jimmy Leahy, and are saddened nothing new has been written in a good while. It's simply good writing.

The rule, I believe, is that fFan fFiction should always be labelled clearly. Jimmy's blog says quite directly "This is NOT an official Perplex City site!!!!" (It didnt at fFirst, thus the ruckus). Emulation is the sincerest of fFlatteries. The difference between ARGjacking and the rest is intent.

Merge away!

I haven't been playing long enough to have experienced the earlier incident and didn't really think there was a need to punish anyone. It's likely n00bs like me who get suckered by such behavior and we'll just need to keep communicating to prevent a recurrence. Do what you will with this thread - surely the matter is dealt with. It has, however, just caused me to recognize what a fragile thing an ARG can be (never played one before) as it only takes one person who doens't play by the rules to make a mess of things.

BTW - oliverkeers *grovel* - you suggest merging this thread "[p]referably in Questions/meta" Isn't that where it is? I'm trying to be conscious of not posting in the wrong areas.

Yes, but I meant the identical posts you made in News/rumors and the card thread itself. Oh, and I typed the P, so there's no need to include the square bracket. It's meant to be a capital if it's the first letter in speech anyway.
Oh, there's no need to grovel, just kiss my hand before you address me directly Wink

Nah Olly, he did it correctly. Its because you typed a capitalised 'P' that he put it as lower case in square brackets. Its to avoid having a capital letter in the wrong place.

Ah, the life . . .

The intricacies of managing a forum are beyond my ken and I trust you to do what is right Smile

Thanks, ChalcoDoror, for keeping my back!

As it's unlikely I'll be across the pond anytime soon (I'm Canadian, eh?) to kiss your hand I'm afraid, oliverkeers13, that my online supplications will have to do Smile

It's just as well you're not in a position to go near him. I think that cravatingitis is contageous.

Hmm...
Well, in my defence I wouldn't really call it ARGJacking as I wasn't screwing around with the PerplexCity ARG in order to promote some other one. It was more of a small joke that I thought people would find out not to be a real kloo pretty quickly.

The second thing is, the UPC Database is nothing but an ordinary website where anyone can write, modify or delete an entry without having to set up an account or pass a validation system.
If I was someone making a game, I wouldn't put a key story item in some place where it could get very easily deleted.

Anyway, I wasn't planning on letting you guys go on a wild goosechase...

However, everyone should be weary of this kind of thing happening for real when the big money prize is close to being found, because you will get some players messing about and throwing people off the scent in order for them to win.

Rest assured that I won't be one of them, but I might throw in some red herrings now and then just to add some fun
Wink

No harm done, I'm sure. This was the first time I came across something like this (and never even heard of ARGjacking before) - I'm sure more experienced players did, indeed, saw this for what it was, even though a couple of us jumped on it..
