[UPDATE] Quirky Acuity - 31/3/06 - Last Page

Quote:

I know, you've been clamouring at me to get that last page of Anthony Granier's diary, and I've been quiet about the whole thing. My personal life is getting complicated, so you'll just have to live with it. (No, I do not want to talk about it.)

You all told me that Anna put that last page back into Cymbalisty's office; not sure why the police would've given it back to her, but maybe they weren't aware it was Academy property. Not like it's got stamps on it or anything. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to get into that locked office, and my usual means for that kind of trick is too busy being cow-eyed over a girl to talk to me, much less to help me. So I did what came naturally, and enlisted the help of the girl, instead.

Miranda really is a very sweet person, and she understood quickly how much I'd like to finish reading that last page. She hardly needed convincing at all, honestly. She didn't have access, either, but she spoke to my dad, and made a good case about needing to retrieve items in the office important to the continued smooth running of the library. (He'd never buy it from me, he knows me too well.) At any rate, he agreed and got the security people to put the right authority onto her key.

So Miranda's been letting me peek in at the page the last few days. It's slow going without Cymbalisty's expertise. Granier had terrible script, for starters, and of course the document isn't in terrific shape. I had to do a lot of research in my off-hours to work it out. I never thought I'd miss Cymbalisty as much as all this, but he really was a clever sort.

So without further ado, here is the page. Not that it's anything but a huge disappointment.

29 April 1736
At last, stole several minutes with Edwina in the great refectory at about the third hour after dawn when my lord's men had broken their fast and gone on their way. She, sighing mightily, declared that she did not wish for my company. I would not brook this and held her fast demanding she should explain to me why she had disdained my society and my bed these past days.

She, sighing again, said: "I cannot speak the words. For then, surely, you would disdain me."

I assured her that this could never be. She, smiling, asked if I could not let the matter bide, pretend that all that had been between we two had never been. I declared that I could not. "Then," she said, "I will confess the matter to you, and you will no longer wish for my society."

So saying, she made this speech:
"My lord," she said, "I am with child. I did not know for certain these few days but now the matter seems to me right clear. The child is yours, my lord."

I could not conceal my horror and alarm at this. Ah, wanion. That such things should be. I wished to look upon her but could not. I cast my eyes downward and muttered some words of consolation but made my good-byes sharply. I must think on this and these pages are no longer secure enough to do so.

Finally! Okay, I'm assuming that "baby" is a metaphor for nuclear weapons, and "Granier" is a metaphor for Sente. And let's say Edwina is Anjsbourg. Well, that settles that!

Let me guess - now we're meant to find the long-lost great-great-great-etc grandchild of Anthony Granier and Edwina Mountling in case they have family secrets that we can accidently stumble across too. Any Perplexian genealogists out there?

Castille family starts here? They're looking the most likely dodgy bunch at the moment.

Nice idea but I think the Castilles go back further. Granier's child would have been born at the beginning of 1737/ 0BC. Henry Castille told Scarlett that he could trace his family back to Viendenbourg before the war - his ancestor Salvant was 7 years old in 0BC and:

Quote:
Out of all the family: parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, seven-year-old Salvant was the only survivor.

Ever the pessimist that I am, isn't it a bit convenient that Miranda (who we are already pretty suspicious of without the bonus "She hardly needed convincing at all, honestly.") gets in on the act and suddenly there's a big disappointment?
If she were a member of 3P or some other secrets-protecting group, think how easy would it be to counterfeit a replacement page that's just complicated enough to convince Violet it's the real deal, which spins a story to throw us off the trail.

That was my initial thought as well, E. But then again, maybe it's a banana. I mean, I really dont like to think all our pestering was fFor the simple goal of fFinding Granier was a fFather. But Edwina did say she was distraught, and didnt say about what. And really, with all that sexxing the lech had going on, it's no real wonder. I agree with Violet: Bit of a huge disappointment. Still, I'm sure there must be some wisdom to be pruned fFrom this.

EDIT: By the way .. I'm just jumping out my skin with enthusiasm about hese two entries, today Smile Violet *and* scarlett have both made me tremendously happy, fFulfilling like a dozen requests *fFinally*! hooray hooray hooray !!! And the sun is out, and there is a light breeze in the air, and ... it's a great day!

This is me being cynical...look away if you don't want to see it.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
What it means is..."OK, here's the rest of the diary, it's really not relevant at the mo. Now can we get on with barking up the right tree?"...

I think we're all barking up the wrong tree here. We're all sure Cymbalisty was killed because he was getting too close to something - we assume the hallowed Last Page of the Grainer Diary. Why would it be so easy to get the last page if he was killed for it? Because it is a forgery.

I'm going to e-mail Violet and ask her if she'd do a date check on the page to see whether it is similar in date to the other pages.

[Edit: Here's what I sent:]

Quote:

Hi Violet,

My name is Josiah, and I am one of the Cube Hunters from earth. I was reading the last installment of the Granier Diary that you posted today and I couldn't help but thinking something is fishy. You've said yourself that you haven't ruled out the posssibility that foul play was involved Cymbalisty's death, and that if it were, it was likely it would involve the Granier Diary.

Anna Heath has contacted us and asked for our help as she also doesn't think that Cymbalisty would take his own life. The Perplex City Police were refusing to give details of the investigation into Cymbalisty's death, but one thing we did find out is that his apartment was clean - really clean - with no traces of anyone including his cleaners - which we thought was strange. We finally managed to get a report on the death of Cymbalisty and we're still looking into the autopsy report to see if we can get any further evidence of foul play.

Anyway, the reason I'm letting you know this is that we really think that Cymbalisty was murdered - and the only reason we can think of is because he was about to uncover something in the Granier Diaries. Which is why it's so surprising to us that the last page was so... empty. I was wondering if it would be possible to do some sort of detailed chemical analysis of the last page to see whether it is of the same composition as the other pages... maybe it has been replaced.

And one last thing... please be careful who you trust. We've seen time and time again that the 3P have infiltrated everywhere - even on earth.

Yours Sincerely

Josiah.

bollards

Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist too - but I find that last page out of character with the rest.

An isn't the fact that Miranda is helping so awfully convenient.

I need to think some more but something is terribly fishy here

agreed

The page is dodgy. and what's with "ah, wanion"? *Definition of wanion
n. - A word of uncertain signification, used only in the phrase with a wanion, apparently equivalent to with a vengeance, with a plague, or with misfortune* [highlight mine]. Odd choice, even with the historical provenance.

We should get Violet to ask Miranda if she knows what 'wanion' means, in a "oh, this is an old word...Miranda do you now what it means? I don't" kinda way. Miranda says "Oh that. It's an old fashioned term for a woman of easy virtue. Why do you ask?" Noel Edmonds pops up with a gotcher.

Although it probably just means "misfortune"in this context.

I'm slapping it with a banana. I think it's just used as a general exclaimation of despair and 'oh bugger'-ness, a little like the NacMacFeegle's "Oh waily!"
