Signed by Kurt, with a playing card symbol of 5 spades, and lettery bits.

The text reads:

There aren't many things that are guaranteed to strike fear into the heart of Bill Gates, but Petals Around The Roses is one of them. Unlike normal puzzles, it's said that the smarter you are, the longer it takes you to work out the rules behind this fiendish games, because you start coming up with outlandishly complex formulas to explain it. It's said that Bill took rather a long time on this one, and almost fooled people into thinking he'd solved it when he hadn't, by memorising dozens of dice rolls. Of course he did get it in the end - eventually.

Here's how it works: You roll five dice, and from them, you have to work out the number of 'petals around the rose'. There is only a single correct answer for each roll. We've included a number of rolls and answers below.

 		i must be a genius then, i cant see any pattern at all, and im not even going to bother making it complicated, maybe i will see something after some sleep...

edit- never mind, im not as smart as i hoped, but i got my answer for when i get this card so its not all bad

 		I didn't want to post the solve when I posted this card, just incase people didn't appreciate it. One of my favourites, I saw the answer immediately, which made me rather happy Smile

 		it took me about 3 mins or so, thinking on it properly.

saw it before and didn't ready it properly that time.

but the title is a very strong clue once you work out the rules.

 		Slow (smart?)
Took me forever (3 sessions of about an hour each, brainstorming). Kept seeing more elaborate patterns. I finally "got" it, and my formula produces correct results, but it's not what others came up with...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Throw out the even dice. Subtract 1 from all remaining (formerly odd) dice. Sum. Turns out this produces the correct result every time, as all odd dice have a central pip and the -1 step discounts for the central pip.


I got hung up on...

The word "rose". I thought it was a homonym for "rows". Then I thought it was the color "rose" and it had something to do with the pink or red die.

 		I wish I could say how long it took me to solve this one, but I already knew the answer before I ever saw it. I had this game played for me in my IB Theory of Knowledge class in high school, so it sort of ruined me for the card, as I already knew the secret Razz

I cracked it in ten minutes using the standard method, but you came up with a whole new solution as far as I can tell.

I love games that torment people. I also am one to overthink things. I had an idea at first that I am glad I did not explore

That's hilarious. I was going to come on here and post that I had already played the game in theory of knowledge. Good to see those blowhards really change up the curriculum from state to state.
