Just a quick question... I'm running the client at the moment and I'm trying to figure out the best speed to get the most out of my computer...

Just wanted to check; if I put the speed up too high will it just run at the highest speed possible and slow everthing else down or will my computer explode and burn down my house...?

Mine has been running at "full" speed for the past 9 days (Pentium 4 2.8GHz). The CPU doesn't even go into throttling mode, never mind burn the house down.

If you are using Windows, put a big number in the config file, start the client and then use task manager to lower the priority; you won't even notice it running when using other programs.

Aww, well it's already turned up to maximum - actually, I tacked on a couple of extra zero's to the end to see if it would go any faster, to no avail. I think Windows probably limits processes to using 50% of your processor power, but if it's any consolation, my hard drive is making a hell of a noise!

Do we know how many computers are running the client now? A weekly update would be neat, along with a percentage of units processed...

The latest client tells you the number of active clients (those who have requested a work unit), and current number of processed work units on startup.

This is available from:

http://www.e-wire.net.au/~eb_oakla/pxc/13labour_1_0_1.zip [Full Install]
http://www.e-wire.net.au/~eb_oakla/pxc/13labour_1_0_1_patch.zip [Patch]

I will update the site links too.

I will also be posting a pic of the growing prize very soon. I have several of the items already (such as the book, poster and some cards) so you can all see the additional incentive.

Happy cracking Smile

Something I've just discovered if you're using dual processor or dual core machines and want to get maximum performance (on Win2k anyway, not sure about XP). Even cranked right up the client will only use 50% of the available resources, as it can only use one CPU/core. To get around this, you need to run 2 copies of the client.

Just create a 13Labour2 folder, and copy the client files into there and run it. Make sure you put a clean version of the txt files in, straight from the zip file - don't copy the ones from an existing 13Labour folder. Obviously only do this if you're happy to absolutely cane the pc in question Wink

Great News

We now have a Client that functions successfully on Macs under Mono.

The new Client (for all platforms) is in:

http://www.e-wire.net.au/~eb_oakla/pxc/13labour_1_0_2.zip [Full Install]
http://www.e-wire.net.au/~eb_oakla/pxc/13labour_1_0_2_patch.zip [Patch]

You don't need pathfree.zip any more on Linux/Mac.

Great work guys Worshippy, I have this running on my laptop whenever possible. Guin, I can't seem to see the website (http://www.13thlabour.tk/) - I just get a blank page in firefox or IE. Anyone else getting this? We could be missing potential clients if I'm not the only one.

I just installed the patch, and see that there's about 350 clinets running.
If MC says that they calculated that it would take 30 000 processors several months to crack this, does anyone else think this may take several YEARS now?

Or, does anyone have any ideas how to hijack 29650 PCs? Wink

Not sure how MC arrived at their figure, but earlier in this (or the other - can't remember) thread, someone reckoned that 350 PC's would take about 9 months. So based on that, early in 2007 we should definitely have an answer - it might be tomorrow if we get lucky though Wink

An aside - GuiN, if you need an installation guide writing then I can do one for Windows and some Linuxes (Linii?) if it would help. Just noticed the "guide coming soon" on the 13thlabour site - let me know if I can help Smile
