#200 - A Dream of Babel [Black Water]

OK, scans of this card will have to come from someone else due to technical difficulties (read: smoke & fire) at our end...

Paraphrasing the card slightly:

PXC scholars are unsure whether the following stories from Earth are 'true' or 'false';

1) Hawthorne's bizarre fiction of a Allied victory
2) The shocking defeat of the US Army at Grover's Mill
3) M le Comte JNA de Fortas' unparalleled collection of rare books
4) The exploits of Jimmy Valentine' son
5) Teach's use of a coded rhyme to recruit new students, for just a song and sixpence
6) The unforgivable dense error of C and C Merriam, lying in between 'dorcopsis' and 'dore'
7) The best selling octolingual writer from Florin City, S Morgenstern and his tales of adventure and romance

Essentially the website wants seven answers of either 'true' or 'false'. So, only 128 posible answers...

Map: "The Click - Roll for Damage played their first gig here in the cramped and swelteringly hot conditions of the upstairs bar." Also, Borland Books, Caine's Apartment

Confirmed answer...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. False - from a Philip K. Dick book 'The Man in the High Castle'
2. False - 'War of the Worlds' Orsen Welles radio broadcast
3. False - Book selling hoax in the 19th Century
4. False - Tales of exploits of a man who sandpapered his fingers to make him better able to pleasure women...go figure.
5. False - tbh just guessed this one!
6. True - From 2nd edition of Webster's dictionary, mistype of D or d. density as an abbreviation gave the word dord meaning density.
7. False - Princess Bride of course!

Uhtoff has explained all but #5, so here's the remaining explanation:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

This originates on snopes.com, a website that investigates and debunks rumors and legends.

"The nursery rhyme "Six a Song of Sixpence" was a coded message that evolved over several years' times and was used by confederates of the notorious pirate Blackbeard to recruit crew members for his prize-hunting expeditions."

Even though that page claims that the legend is true, it isn't even really a legend. It's just something they made up in order to make a point about how you shouldn't rely absolutely on any source, not even themselves. All is explained at:

Uhtoff, do you want to give some sources for 1 and 4. I have the same answers as you for everything else, but be damned if I can source these two.

Here is where I found the answers to 1 and 4:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
For number 1 I found the Philip K. Dick book "The Man in the High Castle" here
For number 4 I found "The Son of Jimmy Valentine" by Kilgore Trout here

I can definitely recommend 1) as a good read - especially since all of us here are by definition into alternate realities...
