13th Labour Client: We Need You!

Hey all!

As you may well know, we're seeking people to run our 13th Labour client. If you have a spare computer which is .NET compatible (e.g. via Mono or the MS .NET framework) please download it and help us solve this one! If you have any questions/comments, please post them under the 13th Labour thread.

Also, we're pushing the client to as many people as possible (you may have spotted us on Boing Boing already). There's a Digg posting here that needs lots of diggs to get onto the front page, and if you know of anywhere you can plug the site, please do so (or let us know of places we could push it). If you do submit somewhere, please add it to this thread so we don't send too many duplicates.

Cheers Smile
MJ

Edit: Replaced URL with a direct one - the redirect is a bit slow.

10 'Diggs' so far - and one of those by the suspiciously named 'danhon'!

Just to note to anyone who hasn't been running the client before:

The client is extremely stable,
and can be easily started and stop should the need arise.

There are several optimisation methods
for various platforms described in the main thread.

So far we have 505 clients active, encourage everone you know to join in.

I'd love to help but I am really computer ignorant. After I download the file to my computer does the number crunching happen while I'm logged off or are there certain hours that it runs on i.e. the middle of the night? Also, how do I report results of the computing? I'll give it a try anyway but I just want to be as efficient as possible. Any info would be great.
Bring down the Bourgeoisie of the 13th labour!

The number crunching happens while you're logged on and the computer is working hehe The results get sent back automatically after every work unit. SO just start it up and it will keep running until you close the window, and will resume again when you reopen it.

The application is as simple as applications come. point and click and off it goes.

The only time you ever need to touch it or do anything exotic is the fFirst time you start it up, when you will need to give an email address and a username. fFrom there on, it works entirely on its own.

Sometimes it may report network congestion; that's ok, it will keep trying to connect to the mothership.

You really need not know anything at all about decryption. We're simply using your extra power cycles to run something neat.

Sample output looks something like this:
Code:

Starting Unit 809787755 at:4/13/2006 1:11:54 PM
Processed 100000
Processed 200000
Processed 300000
Processed 400000
Processed 500000
.
.
.
Processed 14400000
Processed 14500000
Processed 14600000
Processed 14700000
Ending Unit 809787755 at:4/13/2006 1:25:54 PM
Starting Unit 809788499 at:4/13/2006 1:25:56 PM
Processed 100000
Processed 200000
Processed 300000
Processed 400000
Processed 500000
.

Thanks for the info Very Happy I'll install it right away and help out right after work. Excuse my stupidity on computing if it's not Word Perfect of a video game I'm lost, but Perplex City is changing that albiet me being a poor student.
Thanks again. You guys are cooler than the other side of my pillow!

Scott - I'm not getting that code message you posted.

I'm getting something like this:

[--------------PROGRESS------------------]
[...................

every so often another dot will be added and the line of dots is ended with a flashing hyphen...and that's it...

am i doing something wrong?

No, that's right.

The output Scott posted was from the old version.

That's correct - I think Scott was refering to an older version of the client. With the latest version you'll get something like:

Code:

Starting Unit 810043730 at:04/14/2006 15:18:40
[-----------------------------PROGRESS------------------------------------]
[.........................................................................]
Ending Unit 810043730 at:04/14/2006 16:02:27

The dots show how far through the current work unit you are, and once they reach the end it gets the next one from the server and starts work on that.

Edit: Bah, beaten to it Wink

ok cool.

I'm guessing i need to be online to do this...bit of a problem seeing as i'm going away for two weeks tomorrow and i'm not going to have internet access on my laptop for that time...

Still, every little helps, eh...

Now, all i need is a 13th Labour card...anyone? Wink

EDIT: I'm doing one unit roughly every 15-20mins, is that fast enough?

That's a point - I'm on dial-up, which cuts off automatically after two hours. What happens if the client can't report back - does it hang, or what? Presumably this stops me running it overnight?

Yes you will need internet access and the client will just wait there until you reconnect- but it won't process any more Work units.

So for this reason it has been requested that Chimera adds a bit on to the client so it has a buffer of Work units to proccess while it's waiting to send the other one back..I think it's not on high priority at the moment though.
