Google Da Vinci Code Quest - 4/17/06

Found via the MeFi thread about the new Google Calendar release, apparently Google and Sony have partnered to run some sort of puzzle contest beginning on April 17th and tied into the upcoming theatrical release of the movie version of Dan Brown's now-famous book, The Da Vinci Code.

Quote:
Beginning on April 17th you will embark on a quest that requires skill, intellect, and perseverance. For 24 days, you will encounter unique challenges. These daily puzzles will pull you deeper into the world of The Da Vinci Code. Answer all 24 puzzles correctly for a chance to win untold riches.

Only the worthy will prevail.

Interestingly, there was originally a redirect from the main Google site to the above Sony-hosted page, at http://www.google.com/davincicode/, which has since been removed. Additional information is available at the "Google Blogoscoped" blog.

And a bit more about how the contest works. There's gotta be a better way to extract this from the Terms.

Quote:
Contest Description: This Contest begins at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time ("EDT") on April 17, 2006, and ends at 1:00 p.m. EDT on May 21, 2006 ("Contest Period"). For purposes of this Contest, all times refer to Eastern Daylight Time. This Contest consists of a series of skill-based, time-sensitive Puzzles (collectively "Puzzles"). Puzzles are subject to Game Play Instructions ("Game Play Instructions"). The Contest is divided into two (2) phases: Phase 1 and a Final Phase. (A third Phase consisting of an essay competition will be employed only in case of a tie in determining the grand prize winner, as described below). Phase 1 consists of twenty-four (24) Daily Puzzles (collectively "Daily Puzzles") which consist of answering a series of skill based, time-sensitive puzzles (of various types and difficulty) which need not be completed sequentially as outlined below. Only the first 10,000 participants who, having correctly solved all 24 Daily Puzzles during Phase 1, submit a Puzzle Completion Form (and who thereafter submit a Contest Entry Form) in accordance with these Rules before 1:00 p.m. EDT on May 11, 2006 will be deemed "Finalists." Only Finalists are eligible to advance to the Final Phase. The determination of which specific participants, from among all participants submitting Puzzle Completion Forms and Contest Entry Forms before the Phase 1 Deadline, are deemed to be the "first 10,000" to do so (and therefore deemed to be Finalists) will be based on the Puzzle Completion Time and Contest Entry Time (defined below) applicable to each participant. The Final Phase of this Contest consists of a skill-based, time-sensitive series of five (5) puzzles which must be completed sequentially

/me hopes their puzzle designers are a little better than the team working on the M:I:3 promotion...

And BTW you need a gmail account to register. I don't know if gmail invites are still needed, but I have many available... (PM me, don't clog up this thread).

Extra BTW: tons of content in the movie site even now - lots of little puzzles to reveal more bits, clips and stills.

I still doubt that they'll give me the swag (not that I'd win anyway) if I'm not a US citzen...

You don't need a g-mail account, just a Google Account, which is available with any e-mail address.

wow... thats swift! Very Happy I contacted him and got this...

Quote:
Thank you for writing. I apologize for this automated
response, but I am currently in Florence attempting
to locate the key to "The Prophecy" - an encoded
parchment that may have been written by Leonardo Da
Vinci. I will respond to your message upon my return.

Sincerely,

Robert Langdon

Jonas,

If this is you, DON'T erase this email - I can only
send it once. Something terrible has happened. I was
attacked outside my hotel, and the parchment was
stolen! I think the thieves intend to auction it on-
line. I don't have reliable web access here, and I
need your help. You must find this auction
immediately and track down the parchment. Here are
the two best art-related auction sites:

http://www.auctionport.com
http://www.relic-bay.com

When you search, you should definitely include the
initials "LSPDV" because they are so rare. Please do
everything in your power to locate the parchment
soon - I must get it back. I'm getting very close to
uncovering the key to the code.

- Robert

on www.relic-bay.com I searched "LSPDV the prophecy" and got this:
Auction Item #529768A: Encoded LSPDV Parchment
It has been bought by a woman called Marie Denarnaud - I will google her name.

I googled her name, it gave me another site: http://www.rennes-le-chateau.co.uk/html/marie.htm
You have to highlight for the text - as everything is black.
Not sure if it is in-game though, as they seem to be trying to sell a booklet.

Ahh the French police have taken the scroll and are returning it to Rob Langdon.
Quote:
Dear Mademoiselle Marie Denarnaud,
I regret to inform you that we have impounded the contents of your box. The parchment you purchased on-line was stolen. It belongs to a U.S. symbologist, Robert Langdon. We have been unable to reach Mr. Langdon directly, but we have returned his parchment to him in care of his editor Jonas Faukman at the Doubleknight Publishing Group in New York. Mr. Faukman anticipates your concern and is eager to speak to you at your earliest convenience. He can be reached in his office at (212) 782-9920. He urged you to phone him regardless of the hour.

--Bezu Fache
Capitaine, French National Police

Looks like someone will have to ring him.
