[ivy set] #163 - Domino Dilemma

Transcript from card:

I tend to create my best puzzles when I'm waiting for friends at Felon's coffee house, counting down the minutes. Today, I was idly playing around with some dominoes when I put them into this particulary interesting arrangement. How would you label each domino with two numbers from 1 to 6 (just like normal dominoes) so that all the dominoes are different, no two like numbers touch, and each number is larger than the ones vertically below it?

(Picture of dominoes)

None of the dominoes are blanks, so you'll have to label both halves of all of them - I've already filled one in to start you off. Remember, according to the rules, you can't put another 2 next to it, and all the numbers above it must be larger.

(No extra info on map side)

And as it's a prime number, the card is the 4 of Hearts.

I found that with this one, the tried and tested method of "just bung some numbers in lots of times and see where it breaks down" was quite revealing Smile after about ten goes I identified the source of my troubles and fixed it.

oh, having some dominoes helped too.

In the style of ebay "VERY GOOD PUZZLE WOULD SOLVE AGAIN A+++++"

I never noticed this on the original card but are the coloured blobs that show up so clearly in the scan of any significance? They don't match the solution.

Guin, really? are you sure you didn't repeat a domino? I was pretty sure the answer was unique, since I think pretty much everything I put down was forced.

I know there's a solve but thought i'd attach the file that helped me

My file isn't that hi-tech but it helped me get the answer.

Just rotate the dominos to fit where you want them.

Yeah, sorry beglee, but I think you've got 2 dominos with 1:3 on (bottom left and bottom right)

nope, the 1 and 3 on the bottom right of my solution arent part of the same domino, but its hard to see without putting all the numbers into a domino-divided pic.

its possible (like has happened with other cards, ie Magic Square) that there are more than one solution, but that they are only accepting one particular solution (the one posted above by Lilian)

EDIT: removed because i was being stupid! Embarassed

First, i misread what dominoes echidna was referring to, and then upon realising what he/she was saying, i realised that i had it in my head that 3-1 and 1-3 are different dominoes, but of course they arent! D'oh!!
