journal entry for 11th November

http://www.livejournal.com/users/ourfather/day/2002/11/11

I see 18 poems of 18 lines each.

A grid of letters, perhaps?

/me posts first, and then explains.

the first column is the first letters of the 1st stanza.
the second column is the first letters of the 2nd stanza.

catherwood is right. it does give us some messages.
Most noteably:
OPTOMETRIST again on line 4

This puzzle was solved earlier today:

The first letters of each line of the poem form a 18x18 wordsearch, containing over 40 words related to the game.

When you cross out all those words, the letters remaining spell out:

TODAYS CLUE IS THE AFTER DARK MELODIES

See posts 489, 495 and onwards at the Yahoo group.

Coolness!

For those playing at home, I've included the 18x18 grid turned on 4 sides, so that the "backwards", "down" and "up" answers are more obvious.

Code:

I don't know of a way to format this so that you get the "fixed font" of the code block, and also use Bold to denote the found words.

On a mundane note, the text gives some answers (I guess). The reporter got hit by a car and is in the hospital. All the notes Rev. Stone gave to him are gone.

The poem tells the story of what happened to his wife. I skimmed it and correct me if I'm wrong please. What I got is that his wife was named Sabrina and they had a daughter Rachel. Rachel fell off a cliff and died. Sabrina withdrew and Stone started seeing other women. A son was born of the effort and Sabrina found out about it and killed the little boy. Here's where I'm fuzzy. Did she also kill herself? Anyway, easy to see why he went off the deep end.

visual aides

I have created a web page to visualize the word grid.

(i am uploading a work in progess, and will overwrite it later tonight with the finished product.)

(revised... I have not completely identified all words in the grid... suggestions appreciated.)

Ok, I took a stab at the word search as well (with mucho help from catherwood's version).

The left-over letters giving the clue are in red and the updates to catherwood's latest (as of 10:30 pm central) are highlighted in blue. The additional words I came up with are "what" "ran" "come" and "may" (these words are pretty generic, but they fit with the clue Rolling Eyes )

Aveena, that is an amazing layout you've created! I didn't know Excel could create a web page like that.

Anyway, catherwood's file has been updated, and the last few words you got were "What Dreams May Come", a quote from Hamlet and a movie title. (I'm not sure if "ran" was needed.)

"ran" is unecessary. Those letters are picked up by:
INSANITY
SLOANE
CHARADE

And the others you mention are appropriate:
WHAT
DREAMS
MAY
COME
is of course the title hint.

Aha! That's what I get for being so determined to make the clue fit, I didn't see the big picture.

Thanks again to Catherwood - she did most of the work on this one!

Also, i didn't see anyone mention the Billy Joel lyrics in this entry...

Quote:
she waits for me at night. she waits for me in silence. she gives me all her tenderness--and takes away my pain.

someone else's words*, but they seem to fit.

*lyrics are from:
"All About Soul" by Billy Joel
released on River Of Dreams: 1993
