Just a quick question

I was just thinking. Has there ever been a time where people failed an ARG? Like, the players did poorly so the ending was bad?

Im Acheron, the players could choose to help one side. They chose the Side of Evil(tm) and it had a bad ending (but was "swerved" by one of the characters after we'd thought the game was over).

In Omnifam, the players failed a mission so the bad guys won. For now. Wink

As Addlepated said, in Acheron we missed solving a puzzle that would have told us the protagonist we were "helping" had gone over to the dark side. I wouldn't call it "failed" as much as what sometimes happens in real life. Sometimes no matter how hard you work on something, you miss the mark. Businesses fail even if the owner puts all his time effort and finances into it, a student studies for a major test, but doesn't quite have a grasp of the material...

And yeah, it sucks just as much as in real life Wink Laughing

The small grassroots game 'The Carer' had an interesting, if somewhat inevitable, ending. A person we were looking for had been kidnapped by an evil group (always the way Smile) along with 6 others. This person that we had been specifically sent to find/save was a young woman that we had built empathy for through knowing the people that knew her and wanted her to be saved. We were given the choice of either just her being release and the 6 others killed, or the 6 others being released and having her killed. There was a bit of debate as to our choice, but we ended up telling them that we felt we couldn't choose as we didn't think human lives were something to play with and we didn't want the blood on our hands. Our hope was that this might lead to some empathy, but needless to say all 7 were killed instead.

So I guess you could say we kinda 'lost' that one, finding out afterwards that there was a hidden number somewhere that we missed, which we could have called to get the head honcho (who was unaware of the goings on of the evil group) and saved everyone.
