[UPDATE] Sentinel 25th April 2006

New Sentinel Publisher Takes Reins from Clark
By WILHELMINA BEST

The Sentinel has brought Douglass Arroyo on board to take over as publisher, according to a Friday announcement from the Sentinel's parent company, CJM Holdings. The Sentinel's editor-in-chief, Michiko Clark, has been acting as both editor and publisher since the last formal publisher, Lauren Grove, was fired last August. Arroyo has assumed his duties beginning today.

The CJM press release read in part, "We welcome Douglass Arroyo to the Sentinel and know that a man of his integrity and business acumen will help us soar to unheralded peaks. ... We are excited that we were able to persevere and find the perfect person for this role and the challenges it faces today."

Arroyo is leaving his position as publisher at the Finance Observer, where he had been for twelve years. Earlier in his career, however, he spent many years at the Sentinel working his way up from being a cub reporter to being the Sentinel's finance section editor. "It feels great to be coming back to the Sentinel, like I'm coming home," Arroyo said.

As for Clark, she says that giving up the publishing position will be a "tremendous relief." Acting as both editor and publisher "is very stressful, because you can't do either job to the fullest," she said. "Now that my energy is no longer divided between business and content concerns, I can refocus my effort on maintaining the Sentinel's high standards for accurate and incisive reporting."

Lauren Grove, the Sentinel's last editor, was terminated by the CJM Holdings board after a religious intolerance scandal. Grove fired a senior employee after becoming aware of his religious inclinations. The employee, advertising manager Ryan Klein, has since been reinstated.

Earth Conquers Wave 3
By KATE BREWSTER

It's been just two weeks since the launch of Wave 3, yet only four cards remain unsolved: Cards #202, Mother Tongue; #225, Broadside; #233, The Earth's Destiny; and #234, Mosaically Challenged. Notable achievements include the following players, who achieved the first solve for a silver card: randomkevlar solved #229, Ball Night; Fuseunderground solved #230, Eternally Grateful; omitchell solved #232, Water Music; and kian solved #231, Cast Adrift 2.

Also of note are echidna and trevor jarvis, who were the first to solve the black cards #194, Confounding Cube, and #198, Headrush, respectively.

At the top of the leaderboard is 23-year-old ManleyM from the UK, with 9805 points gained from solving 188 cards. Tying with him for first place is 44-year-old doublecross from the Seychelles. These two, along with omitchell, are the only players to have solved Water Music, putting them clearly in the lead by 58 points.

Numerous players gained extra points in a recent preview of the Wave 4 card #92, Dudeney's Medallion, which was first solved by Modern hero. Mind Candy have declined to comment as to whether any more Wave 4 cards will be previewed in this way. Helped along by this and other virtual cards, 4,736 players have now received enough points to be awarded a leitmark, with 81 of these reaching blue leitmark status.

The current top five countries are the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada and Ireland, led by ManleyM, bendover, chimera245, EvilGenius and s00bf0f8. ManleyM is the top-ranked man, while lillyplop is the top-ranked woman, though she is ranked 18th overall. Of the 24,654 players, only 26% have specified their genders; of those, 28% are female are 72% are male. The most common age is 26, while almost a quarter of the players are between 16 and 38. Roughly 18% of the players are from the UK, while 5% are from the United States and 1% from Australia.

Over at Perplexcity.com, new community fansite directory and community news sections have been added to help bring the Earth puzzle solvers together. Mind Candy have also revealed an upcoming film competition, details of which are to be announced this Thursday.

Tokei's Council Quiet

Randal Tokei's Beauty Alliance has been uncharacteristically quiet in the past days after an anonymous source claimed that the group was planning a "major work of street art" sometime this spring. The leak did not describe the work, and some have speculated that the information itself is a part of the artistic work. (Full text)

Futures
By Madame Bianca, for the week of April 24

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Don't get your heart too set on those birthday plans. Sit back and remember the spotty record of the one you're making them with; if you really want a day to remember, better take matters into your own hands.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
I'd tell you to cut that incorrigible deceiver out of your life, but turns out the one who fools you the most is yourself. Honesty, sweet pea -- it's the best policy.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
You may have a song in your heart this week, but for mercy's sake, please keep it away from your lips. I advocate a steady intake of chewy snacks in order to prevent the inevitable embarrassment that will come when somebody catches you crooning Aurora songs.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Wear vibrant colours this week. You know, highly visible ones. Let's just say that the more easily people can see you over the next few days, the less likely it is that things will go poorly for you.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Do your part for science, dumpling. Take part in a study or maybe even do a little research of your own (haven't you always wondered if it's true that older children are bossier?) After all, science has done so very much for you.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
Baking is an acceptable activity this week, but I absolutely forbid you to use cutlery or any other form of heat application. I just couldn't bear having that on my conscience.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Not much of a risk-taker, are you? Why don't you step out of your element this week and do something wild and crazy, like wearing mismatched socks or walking on the other side of the street. Seriously.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
Whatever am I going to do with you? I try and try to help, and you never listen. Well, you know what? I've had it with you, so I'm not even going to tell you what the stars have in store for you this week. You wouldn't pay attention to me anyhow.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
I've just reached a place where the willow don't bend. There's not much more to be said; it's the top of the end. I'm going, I'm going, I'm gone.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
I really love what you're planning on doing with your place. It could use a little more greenery, though, and I have to tell you, those cushions and that paint don't so much go together. Take another look in better light and you'll see what I mean.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Early on Thursday you'll think of something you really urgently need to do. Write it down, because otherwise you'll forget within a few minutes, and by the time you remember what it was, on Sunday evening, it'll be much too late for that.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
To the victor go the spoils, babe. Too bad that's not you. This week you're on a losing streak so wide you may as well pack it in and find a another way to spend your summer. Something non-competitive.

And remember, sometimes the best purchase is nothing at all.

Phew, think that's it Smile

The Apple-Thief is from Going, Going, Gone by Bob Dylan. Seems something of a departure from the usual style of things.

You folks get screwed over by MC as well, card-wise? Unbelievable. J. K. Rowling would go insane if her books were released in anything other than clockwork timing all over the world and MC can't manage a few cards . . .

I rang a retailer in Brisbane the week the Wave 3 cards were due out and he said he was getting Wave 2 in a couple of weeks!

Thankfully the UK retailers are pretty decent in terms of delivery. I don't know why it is so hard to get the cards OS, but apparently it is! I guess it means the chances of getting a live event outside the UK and US is next to nothing.

Ha! Live event! *hoot* As if! (mind you, we did have that theatre thing in Toronto so I guess both the players there lucked out). And don't go thinking the Cube will be accessible outside of London. Who'd a'thought someone would be worse off - sorry. I bet the poor bastards in Copenhagen and Stockholm and Capetown haven't seen any cards yet Smile Yeah, mail order works. I actually scored some Wave three cards from ThinkGeek but had to pay the exchange, $30 shipping and the fees at the border, all to get 2/3 wave one and two cards (like anyone needs any more of those - established players can probably supply every new player in the world from their duplicates without another card being sold from those two waves). Screw that - I'll just harp on MC. Maybe shame is motivating.

BTW - I wonder if our plight has to do with the fact that, for instance, Canada accounts for 3/10ths of one per cent of the players? Australia is a whole 8/10ths of one per cent. Hmmmm

lol! Well, if they actually had the cards distributed a bit better and did any advertising over here (maybe there was an ad in a cinema in Goondiwindi once?) there would be more players in Canada and Australia! I guess MC are expanding quickly and this is the first time they've done it so I'll forgive them. Mind you I really hope they have it sorted by season 2.

No, they really should. EB sells the cards over here, but the blank looks the store assistants gave me when I asked about them - they didn't know they existed, much less knew what they were and could recommend them to anyone.
Must check with them/my other uspplier to see if they're getting the newer waves. o.o

(I was in Goondiwindi a few months ago. No ads that I saw. Wink)

But..yeah. Even just a poster out front of the stores wouldn't be a bad idea.
