[UPDATE] Oistin's Site - 26 April 06 - Conceptual Art test
Quote:
ABOUT THE STUDY
Welcome back! Thanks so much for your help with the first test. Or if you haven't taken it yet, please spend a few minutes filling it in here before you begin.
You don't need to have taken part in the first test to enjoy this next phase, but it would be really useful to build up a full set of data for each individual. Of course, your identity won't be revealed when the results are published. I'll just need to ask your name (or screen name) so I can match up your test data from each phase.
Don't worry, I'll keep all your personal information private but you can find out more in my privacy policy.
Thanks for your help!
Oistin S. Meade
ABOUT THIS TEST
This phase of the study is designed to examine your conceptualization skills - your ability to synthesize abstract concepts and translate them into visual images.
I will offer a selection of concepts for you to portray. You must choose one.
You must then illustrate your choice in whatever form you feel appropriate. The only requirement is that the end result can be uploaded digitally to this site - so if you create a sculpture or a painting, I would ask you to upload a digital photo of it.
OTHER PEOPLE'S SUBMISSIONS
The Concepts
Please select one of the following concepts as the basis of your creative work:
A) What is it like to be a citizen of Earth?
B) The meaning of life.
C) Do people on Earth have souls?
D) A mind in torment
E) The wind beneath my wings
F) The feeling you get at half past two on a winter's afternoon when your lunch seems like a distant memory, but it's still nearly an hour until your next designated snack time.
G) The collective unconscious
H) TJ Hooker

Here's what I got after submitting a one minute MS Paint piece of junk...

Fascinating. Earth is one of the most complex sophisticated and varied worlds in any universe. It is populated by billions of people who speak hundreds of languages and live in frozen wastelands and urban jungles and desert dunes and chains of tropical islands. And this is the best you could come up with? Are you familiar with the work of Sanjean Adamek? Have you considered a change of career?
I'm completely new, but I'm assuming that Sanjean Adamek could be a lead.

Pretty similar response for my effort (category A):

My image:
PS Prof Adamek is already known to us as senior fellow of the arts department at the Academy.

All artistic judgement is necessarily subjective. Your work has captured the notion that appearances can be deceptive. Hooker's apparent demotion from detective to sergeant was mirrored by a reciprocal change from plain clothes to uniform essentially transforming him from pseudo-civilian into uniformed crusader. His drop in police status actually enhanced his image as superhero. In a similar way the unpromising appearance of your work playfully hints at the hidden potential of an unseen masterpiece. Have you considered a change of career?
Very deep, he has truly captured the genius of TJ Hooker
_________________Like your hero TJ Hooker you tackle challenges head-on with determination and vigour paying scant attention to the law. This devil-may-care attitude may work for fictional crimefighters but it can be counterproductive in real life.

Well this was certainly unexpected. Torment seems to elicit your creative juices. Like the grapes of Harbin you must be crushed before you achieve your potential. It is not always possible to translate a creative vision into reality. Inevitably artistic standards between our two cultures differ. I don't know much about art but I know what you're like.
for my 13th labour inspired image

For the catogory for "The feeling you get at half past two on a winter's afternoon when your lunch seems like a distant memory, but it's still nearly an hour until your next designated snack time."
I used this pic, might not be what they was after, but I thought I would bring to the people of Perplex City the joy that is Spaced.

Clearly a lot of work has gone into this. All human life has at its base a drive towards survival. The body regards food as a finite resource and even thousands of years of civilisation has failed to tame our fear that the next meal may never come. The absent snack can be seen as a foreshadowing of our own death and ultimately the extinction of our race. Your work has sought to capture this theme in its own meagre way. It is not always possible to translate a creative vision into reality. Have you considered a change of career?
oistin obviously heard about our suggestions for a 'post to your blog' option ;)

Fascinating. A vessel filled with water is a giver of life. But even when a vessel seems empty it may contain a breath. It is not always possible to translate a creative vision into reality. Inevitably artistic standards between our two cultures differ. Have you considered a change of career?
Finally! Somebody gets the subtext!
Now, do you think the autoresponses are generated based on an actual analysis of the pictures, or just on the titles we choose?

Clearly a lot of work has gone into this. Creativity is born of desire. Contentment leads only to stasis and inertia. By examining the emptiness of afternoon hunger you have been pulled forward into a more creative mindset. Remember this feeling each time you reach for a biscuit. Are you familiar with the work of Sanjean Adamek? Have you considered a change of career?
Not showing the pic, it is soooo rubbish!

Test Results! Woo! Here is my effort and Oistins assessment
I chose "What is it like to be a citizen of earth"
My response "...more like 1984 every day"
Quote:
Fascinating. A true artist can see beyond the visual. They can hear what remains silent. They can touch what is intangible. Your work has captured the essence of the Earth condition and distilled it then reduced it to its smallest form and hidden it out of sight. Are you familiar with the work of Sanjean Adamek? Inevitably artistic standards between our two cultures differ. Have you considered a change of career?
I think Oistin likes a bit of sarcasm.. Anyone checked up on Sanjean Adamek yet or discovered any kind of clues in the site?

Clearly a lot of work has gone into this. It is believed that all people have a basic set of shared feelings and images crossing all cultures and ages. These images are tied to human concepts of life and death and hunger and happiness and pain. They are also thought to be the source of legends - stories which express common themes that resonate throughout history recurring in different forms down the centuries encapsulating the hopes and fears of mankind. Your work is not legendary. Inevitably artistic standards between our two cultures differ. Have you considered a change of career?
