I can confirm I entered this one successfully

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Balance 3
--------------
Left branch, top row = 4 6 2
Left branch, middle row = 1 2
Left branch, bottom row = 3 1 1
Middle branch, top row = 4 5
Middle branch, bottom row = 10 1 1 1 1
Right branch, top row = 3 1
Right branch, bottom row = 1 1 3
Total = 52

Mind Candy support replied and told me that they would update their database. It seems to be a bit of a stock answer they use, which is very inconvenient since there does not appear to be any obvious way to know when they will do/have done that update.

I have a friend who has been waiting for almost a week for one particular update to be done. Which is not good if you are trying to minimise the number of incorrect answers in your profile.

There are 6 solutions:
they all differ on the left branch of the bigger balance:
Reading from top to bottom and then left to right, the 6 solutions are:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

2 5 2 1 3 4 2 1
2 2 3 5 1 4 2 1
2 2 3 2 3 5 1 2
2 8 1 3 1 3 1 1
6 1 4 3 1 3 1 1
4 6 2 1 2 3 1 1

Well I think I've got a solution that uses unique weights 1-5 and 1-20 for each puzzle (like I think Friedman suggested)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Top puzzle (weights in kg from left to right):
row 1: 4,5,3
row 2: 2,1

Bottom puzzle:
Left hand side (weights in kg from left to right):
row 1: 14,16,13
row 2:10,11
row 3:19,7,6

Right hand side (weights in kg from left to right):
row 1:15,17
row 2: 5,8,18
row 3:12,9
row 4:20,4,3,2,1

But of course the site says no. Can someone see if I've made a mistake or is this really a solution?

Both your puzzles are jacked padge. You can use 1kg (as well as the other weight values) more than once...

I'm really annoyed over this card....

Look back in this thread and you will see that stratman tracked down and emailed the guest puzzle designer (Erich Friedman). He asked:

Quote:
Stratman:I think there is a mistake on the card as, although it is not made clear, I suspect each weight has to be unique as in your puzzle page examples.

Erich: so true. they weren't clear.

So Erich is saying that you must use unique weights for each puzzle. As the puzzle says that if you use the lightest combination, there is only one answer, then you can assume that weights 1-20 (for the big puzzle) are the combination at hand.

I've written a brute force prog for this and I can confirm that using the weights 1-20 for the big puzzle, there is only ONE answer!

What annoys me is that (what should be) the correct answer is now not allowed [start of rant] because MindCandy's QA process is non-existent and they keep releasing flawed cards! [rant over]

It is hard not to agree,
With the number of people now employed by MC,
Wave 3 cards should be free from mistakes.

After all they are no longer pre-release,
and surely someone should have noticed it doesn't say 'unique weights'.

I think they should still accept the 'unique weights' answer,
as anyone familar with the author's puzzles would expect it.

It doesn't make me love this game any less though Very Happy

GAH! locked out,

It really doesn't help those folk who struggle with the maths puzzles! NUmbers! BAH! I don't know whether I'm entering the wrong answer because my maths is faulty or because of a typo, or because of MC not accepting a perfectly good answer.

I know we've had hints and workings and stuff, but could somebody post what specific numbers they entered for each weight that confirmed the solve? Cause I've obviously fecked it up somewhere

New solution accepted

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Weight #1: 1kg
Weight #2: 2kg
Weight #3: 1kg
Weight #4: 3kg
Weight #5: 7kg
Weight #6: 3kg
Weight #7: 1kg
Weight #8: 3kg
Weight #9: 3kg
Weight #10: 5kg
Weight #11: 1kg
Weight #12: 1kg

This gives the total weight of the sides on the top diagram as:
Side 1: 1kg (2nd mark) + 3kg (1st mark) = 5kg force on fulcrum
Side 2: 1kg (1st mark) + 2kg (2nd mark) = 5kg force on fulcrum
And a total weight of 7kg for the entire upper assembly

This gives the total weight of the sides on the bottom diagram as:
Side 1: 20kg (5th mark) = 100kg force on fulcrum
Side 2: 23kg (2nd mark) + 9kg (6th mark) = 100kg force on fulcrum
And a total weight of 52kg for the entire lower assembly.

Mind Candy says:

Thanks for your email.

Your solution is correct and will be added to our solution database in our
next update.

I worked on the same basis as padge, and came up with the same unique solution as well.

Unfortunately this "correct" answer is not being accepted which is utterly ridiculous. There are loads of different solves if you can use 1kg multiple times, and that destroys the sense of the puzzle.

I'm fed up that I found THE answer, but that it is not being accepted.

On the other hand, it was a great mental work out...

Well, the card DOES specify that you must use the lightest possible combination of weights.

Am I being a complete 'tard here?

I have a few questions..

1. Why are poeple giving answers of 12 weights when there are either 11 for the hardcore scales or 13 if you add in the 'easy' one?

2. Does the adjoining bar from one level to the next count as the pivot for the lower level and does that level have to balance or are we only looking at the big picture?

3. Are the numbers present on the card (scanned at beginning of the thread) correct? as the numbers in many of your accepted answers dont even have them in!

I am beyond confused.
