Ummm

damn good question!

I've been going there for years trading comics, M:tG cards, etc and havent bothered once looking up at the sign above their door!

If it helps, they're on Elden Street, just on the Reston side of old-town Herndon.

Will update after I stop by there on my way home from work today with their name.

(Edit) I didnt have time to stop by, but from a simple googlemaps search I believe that the place is called "Phoenix Comics & Toys" and it appears to be the only comic shop on Elden Street in Herndon. I will edit2 when I get confirmation of this.(/Edit)

Meeting Place

Well it seems that we've been dealt a crushing blow here. Comics, Etc. (the shop in Herndon) delivered a final NO today as far as hosting the swap meet. The reason - Alliance Game Distributors does not carry PXC, so he would make no money off sales. I checked with other local shops and got the same answser. I will be looking at local libraries to see if I can book a meeting room for Saturday, the 10th, and failing that, I would likely have to book a conference room at a local hotel. If anyone's got bright ideas as to where we can get free room to have an event, I'm all ears. If it comes down to booking a conference room at a hotel, there will have to be an admission charge at the door to cover costs, and I was really hoping to avoid that. If you're planning on coming and haven't told me yet, reply in this thread and send me an email at the address below.

Thanks

Well, local libraries are already booked up for the Saturday in question. I've been conversing with DiG, who has yet to post here, and he volunteered his house! While I appreciate the willingness to open up a home for this event, I personally did not open up my home for 2 (what I feel are) very important reasons:

1) Homeowner's insurance only covers permanent residents. Most accidents happen inside the home, and I wouldnt want it on my conscience that someone hurt themselves in my home. I also wouldn't want medical bills on my list of monthly payments - that'd be less money going towards PXC cards (one of the few luxury items I actually budget for)

2) And I'm only thinking worst case scenario here, so no accusatory glances have been made at anyone - god forbid someone decides to walk off with the family silver. This is a minor reason compared to number 1, but with even the remotest possibility that it could happen, I really can't justify having an event in a residential home.

That being said, DiG also brought up Food/Drinks/etc. What I'm pursuing now that I know the libraries are out of the question are twofold - I'm going to book a conference room at a local hotel, which is just down the street (about 3/4 miles, just over 1km for you metric readers) from a local park. Plan A is to have the meet at the park, hot dogs, burgers, etc for everyone who's coming there, with Plan B for weather to pack everything and everyone up, and move it down the street to the hotel for the rest of the day.

This is getting to be a long post, and the Benadryl is definitely kicking in, so I'll be heading out now. If you plan on coming and haven't sent an email to my gmail account, please do so, so we know how much loot we have to have on hand, and how many we can expect for the meet!

Thanks

Event location FINAL

Ok I have secured a deal with my homeowner's insurance company. I will have the meet at my home. There are only a few ground rules that you must agree to before I will let you know the address.

1) If it's not yours, don't even pick it up - I know this should be common courtesy, but it has to be said. This policy extends to anything and everything in and around the house, especially other guest's property.

2) Do not go upstairs - nothing will be happening up there, and the cats will be locked up for the day. I would rather that than have them freaking out around so many people, especially the kitten. If you're allergic to cats, please let me know so I can start cleaning now and we can avoid allergic reactions. That said, I have plenty of Benadryl (pollen allergies) so if worse comes to worse, I am prepared.

3) No smoking inside the house - there is a covered patio in the front and a semi-covered deck in the back.

4) Parking is at a premium - the house is on a cul-de-sac, so there's room for a total of maybe 6 cars. If we fill up, I'll be glad to arrange for transport to/from a parking lot nearby.

5) Drinking - Light alcoholic beverages (beer, wine coolers, etc...) will be made available ONLY if you are 21 years of age or older, so please exhibit some self-control. If you have too much to drink, your keys will be confiscated, and you will be driven to a local hotel to stay at your own expense.

6) Behavior - This is my home. If you can't behave socially, you will be asked to leave. This includes fighting, breaking any of the above rules, and general asshattery, so follow the rules as if you were in your mother's home, and we should be alright.

I will be posting the address as we get closer to the date of the event. If you plan to show, please please please RSVP so I can make accomodations. As it stands now, the house is NOT wheelchair accessible, but we can work that out if need be.

The deck in the back measures 18x20 feet, plenty of room for activities, and there will be a grill out back. I'd like to ask folks to bring beverages and/or food. I will have a limited amount at my disposal, and more would always be appreciated.

There is a 9 foot pool table. If you play, and would like to bring your cue, I am always ready for a good challenge. I will be at the peak of getting ready to go for my APA 9-Ball Tournament card (Richmond, June 17th), so bring your game if you want to play.

Also, this is happening on my 23rd birthday, so If you were to bring a small present, it would not be refused, but this is not a requirement. I'd love to get an album or 2 to store my PXC cards, and of course more cards in case you're making a list.

I am working with Fiona Silk of Mind Candy to get some door prizes, as well as DiG, who is helping me organize the event. So far on the list, we've got a couple of nice items that you'll have to show up to find out.

All that said, I'd like to have folks showing up no earlier than 11am, and being that it's a Saturday, we can run pretty late, but I'd like to get some sleep that night too, so not -too- late.

Thanks!

Okay... I'm there. I can bring food/drinks and some door prizes. And, of course, cards to trade.

I will probably be bringing my kids who are interested in Perplex City (ages 11 and 9). Don't worry.. they are very well-behaved and pretty sharp for their ages. I'm sure they will bring along gameboys and yu-gi-oh cards for playing.

I'll get others who are planning to come to post as well.

Cheers, DiG...

Happy days

Glad to see so many people excited about the swap meet!

I'll put up some general directions here, they'll get you to my (very) short street, and there will be balloons on the mailbox so you know exactly which house to come to. I'm not posting my exact address for (hopefully) obvious reasons.

From Dulles Airport:
1) Take no-toll VA267 East towards Washington, stay in the right-hand lane to exit VA-28 North (Sully Road) towards Route 7
2) On VA-28 North, stick with right hand lane, exit (right) onto 846 East (Sterling Boulevard)
3) On 846 East, stay with right-hand line for 1.3 miles, turn right at Maple Ave.
4) On Maple Ave, go 0.5 miles, turn right onto S. Fillmore
5) On S. Fillmore, at 2nd stop sign (0.3 miles), Turn left onto Linden Ct.
6) On Linden Ct., at 1st stop sign (95 feet) turn right onto Autumn Olive Way
7) Look for the convocation of vehicles and Balloons tied to an ivy-covered mailbox (200 feet), I am the fifth house on the right side, just at the opening of the cul-de-sac.

I've said before that parking is at a premium. In the cul de sac we have room for 5 or 6 vehicles, and we also have permission from my neighbor across the street to use the strip of road to the side of their house for overflow. That said, please don't walk on their grass on your way to/from your car if you park there. They're very particular about their lawn. I'll see you there, bright and early 11am (or later) on Saturday, June 10th

And just for you Karen, come up 95 North take the Inner Loop of 495 (West, not East) ('Embarassed'), Exit at VA-7 (Harry Byrd Highway) West towards Leesburg, go about 10 miles to Sterling Blvd (846) Left onto Sterling Blvd, 3 miles, turn Left on Maple, and Left again on S. Fillmore. This will get you to direction 5 above.

Oh, and DiG, I'm sending you an email with my cell phone number. Hit me up so we can make with the plans...

Thanks
Erik

bumpity bump bump, trying to keep people aware of the situation. It looks as though I'll be throwing down about $200 for supplies, which I don't mind absorbing, but my earlier statement stands -
If you're coming, PLEASE RSVP
If you're not coming, PLEASE tell me so I can adjust plans accordingly

I'm tentatively planning to have food/drink/etc for about 20 people to be on the safe side, and would rather not have to go out during the day to get more.

Thanks!

Hey everyone.

I want to reiterate what drizzt has said already.

PLEASE RSVP SOONEST!

I will be there early bringing unopened Wave 3 boosters (the new ones with all three waves) for all attendees.

Cheers, DiG...

RSVP RSVP RSVP

Ok between the folks who've posted here, the folks I've talked to thru gmail, and the folks who I've traded with indicating interest, I've got about a dozen (including your two extra, DiG), plus myself and 4 family members makes 17 - I've got food and drink planned for 20-25, so I should be clear there. Since my gmail box is so cluttered, I want anyone/everyone I've talked to to please send me an email with Subject line "RSVP" and something in the body if you plan on coming. If you plan on bringing anyone with you, please note that in the body. Trying to shore up my totals so I don't come up short on this one.

I will be replying with the address in the email, and google maps (http://maps.google.com) knows where I live, so directions should be pretty easy to obtain.

Thanks!

RSVP 1 for the Meet!!

I'm very interested in attending the hotel event in June -- sorry I missed the house party.

I live in DC, so I won't need a hotel room.

Thanks for implementing this great idea!!

drizzt, it looks like you've made your peace with having the thing at your house (you're a braver man than I), but if you still think an alternative site might be better, you might try calling Dream Wizards in Rockville. They have a large space they use for CCG touraments, etc., which would serve the purpose. And they carry PXC cards, or at least they're about to -- I was in there yesterday and the guy said they'd be getting some in. It's a bit of a drive, but it'd probably save you some dough and some grey hairs.

http://www.dreamwizards.com/

Oh, BTW, if the swap does get moved, for heaven's sake everybody must shower! I was in there a couple months ago during a Magic tournament and the nerd miasma was so think you could cut it with a knife. Wink

Afs for me, I'd like to come, but I don't have any cards; neither do a have a job (but I do have one heck of a mortgage), so I don't know that I will end up with any by two weeks from now. Put me down at 40%.

Thanks,
--Cliffy
