The question is ambiguous. It is 'To which mystical place were these locations fated?' Does that mean that they actually got there at some point in the past, or that they were originally thought to be fated to go there but aren't any more?

I'd agree with you.
However, the puzzle scribes may have made the same mistake.
I know it doesn't move us forward, but with all the mistakes on other cards I don't think we can rule out one on this card.

Has anyone managed to work out exact (within reason) locations for the stars? I.e. cities? They might be four places visited in a certain movie or book, for instance.

There is a possibility that it could be a movie or some computer game that links these locations.

Tried
Cradle of Life
Tower of Babel
ends of the earth

is the word "the" necessary for the start of a place name?
as in "The Tower of Babel"

First post on unforums (so be nice Wink ) and figured I might as well jump into the big ones.

First off, a couple of things have bothered me about the wording of the card. As doublecross just brought up, the actual question of "to which mystical place were these locations fated" could point to something that has happened or to something that was supposed to happen, but didn't. It's very likely we want to find a legend that never came to pass (kinda like the Y2K scare Wink ).

The other thing that makes me lean this way is the second question on the card of "are our lives preordained", which to me is hinting that a "fate" does not necessarily have to happen.

Where all that is going, I'm not sure.

For those that like to keep track of wrong answers...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I have tried the following after tracing the stars to their current locations and being led into a variety of alleys. The search was rather informative if anyone is that interested in new things. I still think the first idea may be in the right direction if we are looking for something that has happened already. Anyway...

Pralaya (and mahapralaya)
North star
Polaris
Pole star

Perhaps they all were part of the same mountain range at one point in time... and maybe that mountain range has ties to something else?

what about the possibility that through their course across the planet these 4 points crossed through the same spot at some point, not necessarily all at once. like triangulation, perhaps there is only one place possible where all 4 have been (stressing not at the same time).

Since I don't have the card, I just wanted to follow up on a previous post - has anybody tried the ultra-cheesy answer of 'Perplex City card 233' or 'Earth's Destiny' yet?

I'm still fairly new to Perplex City, so my input may not be great, but here goes.

I've been trying to figure out this card for a while now, and I don't think that you're going to get one of those cheezy "Perplex City card #233" answers on this one. It's probably a legit answer. I have been trying to analyze the rest of the card, other than the question "To which mystical place were these locations fated?"

If that was all we needed, that would be all on the card. I think there is more relevance to the excerpt above it:

"Ever since the dawn of time, every step we've taken, every advance we've made, every minute of our lives has already been decided."

Considering all on the card, and Von's clue, I gather that each of these places, whatever they are, were definitely destroyed, or no longer exist. I know I'm repeating, I'm just trying to get my thoughts out and in order. I'm also still trying to get a grasp on what defines a "mystical place". I'll see if I can come up with anything of value for anyone.

For a fit to the card that's one of the best Pangaea break-up sequences I have seen. The top star now looks to me like it could be right on Iceland, which seems to start at the top right of Greenland and wander across the North Atlantic towards the UK. [Edit: Oops, no, I dont think it is Iceland - that must be the island further south...the island I was looking at on the Pangaea map must be the Norwegian island Svalbard]
Trout me if you will as the next bit is off subject, but in browsing facts on Iceland I came across the following and just had to share it with you all...

The Icelandic national food, žorramatur, is mostly eaten during the ancient Nordic month of žorri, in January and February, as a tribute to old culture. Žorramatur consists of many different types of food, for example sour ram's testicles, rotten shark, burned sheep heads, sheep's head jam, blood pudding...

Yum!
