[UPDATE] New letters Column April27, 2006

FROM THE BIZARRE RANTS DEPARTMENT...
Having followed Tally's domination of the leaderboard with great interest I have noticed a distinct lack of progress in recent days. Having described herself as a sprightly 97 year old and been reported by the Perplex City Sentinel as a participant in the Live Event (below):

"Tally Climbs to Top Place on Leaderboard
By KATE BREWSTER
After climbing to the top of the leaderboard by way of her team's fourth place result in the London PCAG event, Ramazel has now slipped to third place. Tally, a 97-year-old from the UK, has overtaken her for the top spot. Tally was part of the second place team at the London event, earning 200 points."

...there was no reason to doubt this.

So what could have inspired this lack of effort and interest in the Wave 3 cards? Maybe, I thought to myself, she was poorly -- or the excitement of W3 had given her a funny turn and she'd had to have a lie-down.

However, on further investigation, I discover that she has miraculously reverted to the age of 38. This would explain a lot -- finding the Elixir of Youth would certainly take precedence over solving cards to find a cube... then the thought occurred to me - What if the two were related?

Maybe -- as she was way ahead of any of us -- she had actually FOUND THE CUBE?? We have been told that it has amazing and miraculous properties. Perhaps it bestows eternal youth on the one who possesses it?

If the Cube has been found, I think we should be told. In the meantime I shall keep an eye on her profile for further changes...

Bunnery, Earth
Ed. Note: This letter has been chosen as the Sentinel's Star Letter of the Week. The author has accordingly received five points on the Perplexcity.com leaderboard, as will future recipients of the Letter of the Week prize.

[Next Letter]

It is with great amusement that I note how you Perplexians have yet to ken just how that Cube of yours could have made its way to Earth. The answer ought be as obvious to you as it is to all of here on my planet. Oh, yes -- we know exactly how your cube-thingy came to be here. I think it's cruel how my compatriots have kept you in the dark about this truth, playing with you like a cat with a mouse. Shall I spoil the fun? Clothes dryers. There, I've said it. Since the earliest patents for this diabolically protean contraption were granted to George Sampson in 1892, we on Earth have been engaged in nearly constant interchange with beings from another dimension. Until now we didn't know your name but we knew you were out there. At first with befuddlement, and later with a glimmer of understanding, we have been exchanging what we can only assume to be the appropriate currency of such transactions - socks. You call then "lecks" it seems. Odd, isn't it, how that our different cultures have settled on such similar names for things...

It had long been assumed that the vagaries of multi-exhaust manifolds in spacetime meant that we could only transmit footwear across the Void. In recent years, however, it has been recognized that socks (sorry, "lecks") have been manifesting themselves in our new-fangled, high-efficiency dryers with ever-increasing frequency. Who knew that it was simply a technological limitation?! My laundry is now regularly flecked with clothing of other-worldly provenance -- lecks and more, like panties and the odd thong. Sometimes what appears to be wadded-up paper, keys, the occasional handful of loose change is discovered lurking in the trap. While I must say that I am grateful for the newer items I would prefer to have my original items back. My solitary sock collection is growing vast and disturbing. What you must be doing with the ones inadvertently send to you I can only imagine. In any event, this mode of material displacement is surely how your Cube was sent here -- someone must have put the thing on the "Delicate" cycle or whatever you people consider safe for polyhedras. I can tell you from experience that more cubes get misplaced this way than all other causes combined. Myself, I have experimented with cubes of sugar, chalk, and talc, and have successfully transmitted them every time, leaving the dryer entirely empty!

I hope that clears up matters for you. Should we locate your Cube, rest assured it will go in with the first load. If you need further enlightenment regarding multi-exhaust manifolds, just send along an Argyle, holed tube sock (no stripes, please), and a pastel thong to: Dryer #3 (from the left), Sit and Spin Laundry, Vancouver, Canada, and I will get right back to you.

EvilGenius, Earth
PS -- Is a Receda Cube safe with colours?

...AND MORE MUNDANE AFFAIRS
Isn't it time the Council stepped in to control the AQ's ridiculous property prices? I realize that space is at a premium, but surely something should be done. Immediate action must be taken.

Well done, Bunnery! Your two letters of the week to my one (even though mine really was the letter of three weeks, from the 6th until now) equals a challenge. At least my new letter is also published Smile Consider yourself challenged for letter-writing supremacy! Your strategy of two sentences per paragraph has no chance against my imposing blocks of text. Have at you - Muhahahaha! (tm)

Bunnery ~ Just wanted to say I thought your letter was very amusing Smile I tried to mail you on the PxC site...

Anyway, cheers for the interest in my health and well being. Currently I am doing very well, and very sprightly, thank you Smile

Although, sadly, your inquiries shall yeild little, since my aged lips are sealed, as I am sworn to secrecy. But yes, do continue the good work, and good luck finding the cube Smile

*ahem*

Tally

Thank-you Tally - just happy to know that you are okay - and still doing puzzles. Although there is obviously something going on..... but I can bide my time and look out for those clues. Smile
I haven't got time for puzzles any more, myself - locked in this letter-writing war with EvilGenius Smile Smile
