I feel sorry for Dreyfus Health, then, because their servers are about to get swamped with misguided Lost fans...

Wow, yeah, especially since there is a "Log-In" place to a database that they describe as having "a heart and soul." (http://www.thf.org/data.html)

I really can't understand how the PMs wouldn't check if there was a website of THF.org before they sent the masses there. That's just strange. Poor Dreyfus workers.

I set back my computer clock to May 1 and tried logging in to the bios, mental health and small log in at bottom with various combinations of "breaking strain" "missing organs" and "may 1" with no luck.

Dreyfus Health does seem legit but it doesn't help matters for them that the first letters of their name is the first 2 letters of Dharma

Honestly, I think the phone lines going down was mostly intentional... the press releases are likely just another movement in the game, especially with the Persephone subsite reveal.

But still, it is missing a big step if you don't check that the site aconyms you're posting have a real counterpart in cyberspace. That's pretty blunderous.

(Although, if this site isn't in-game, which it doesn't seem to be because it links directly to hospitals, the PMs are to be responsible, but so is thelostexperience, who didn't report about what the link was to. They have now, it seems, but still, knowing they are a public repository for public solutions to these puzzles, one would hope they'd at least check it out before they linked it... whatever, though. They fixed it now, all is good)

We are all assuming that "Log in at THF.org May 1 This is safe for now" is the correct solve. I mean it seems like it's right but it doesn't make any sense. I really doubt that the PMs would be so sloppy as to direct the masses to a legit site. I'm just sayin' is all......

I don't think it was that they didn't know THF was a real site (hell, all three letter urls are probably real sites) so much that they didn't care. We're already waaaaay overthinking things. What are the chances that an incorrect solve for the puzzle would have the EXACT initials as the only site that we know is in-game? Virtually none.

They counted on us assuming that THF referred to the Hanso site. I don't think it's their fault that people chose to ignore the obvious. It was just unlucky on their part that THF.org ended up being a site that people could mistake for being in-game.

could it be that you are supposed to move the 1 13 places too, so really it would be May 14th?

edit: OR could it be the 31st, since it would have been reversed. The 31st IS a wednesday.

oh wait that doen't make sense, it would be the 41st Laughing

I don'tk now if this is considered an off-topic debate here, but Smile

If they don't care that THF.org is actually a real site, then they were willing to deal with someone else's site crashing due to high-volume without being told, their site being crawled and torn to shreds etc. in an attempt to disprove it's legitimacy, etc.

It isn't hard to fix, and there is probably an easy way to say the same thing without causing another company undue distress.

That makes total sense! I think you are on to something.

I agree. I mean, how hard is it to check out if someone's already using that particular domain. Especially with all of the fan sites out there already, it just seems like sloppy PMing.

On IRC, they haven't had any luck logging in with computer clock set to the 14th, so perhaps we actually have to wait til the 14th... Also, it may give us time to actually find out how exactly we are supposed to log in (which log in box, what username, etc)... Although this isn't to say stop trying to think up ideas! It could well not be that, and we just don't know... Anyone?

Anyone...?

Persephone's number message walkthrough

I don't know about you, but was confused by how the number message from Persephone was decoded, so I did all the decoding again myself.

I found that the problem is everybody says they used ROT13 to decode the message, but they left out important steps in between and some of the reasoning used to "connect the dots".

I'm sorry I know that's really obvious to most of you, but thought a step-by-step explanation early in the game would help others get involved and be able to contribute.

STEP-BY-STEP
When you look at the sequence of numbers it seems like the number 32 is out of place and it repeats an awful lot. So I figured it could be a delimiter between words... like maybe a <space> character. Also, the numbers stay between 32 and 118 and ASCII characters go from 0-127.

So first, I converted the numbers to ASCII with this website:
http://www.lookuptables.com/

Then, I broke up the numbers to make it easier to decode.

106 98 111 32 -> jbo
117 98 115 32 -> ubs
114 115 110 102 32 - rsnf
102 118 32 -> fv
102 118 101 71 32 -> fveG
49 32 -> 1
108 110 90 32 -> lnZ
116 117 98 46 83 69 71 32 -> tub.SEG
103 110 32 -> gn
111 118 32 -> ov
116 98 73 -> tbI

This gives us:
jbo ubs rsnf fv fveG 1 lnZ tub.SEG gn ov tbI

Still jibberish so it still needs to be further decoded. One way to hide a message in jumbled text is character rotation or shifting. ROT13 (ROTate 13 places) is most common on the internet. For instance all "a"'s shift 13 places and become "n"'s. It's easier to spot when you see two letter groupings that have "a"s, "n"s, "i"s, "v"s, "o"s, "b"s, "f"s or "s"s which make up common words like an, is, in, of, if, so, etc.

Anyway, ROT13 conversion from http://www.rot13.com gives:
wob hof efas si sirT 1 yaM gho.FRT ta bi goV

Its pretty easy to pick out "1 yaM" as May 1, so I reversed the text
Vog ib at TRF.ohg May 1 Tris is safe foh bow

Almost there, but the message still doesn't make sense. But when you read "is safe foh" seems like it should read "is safe for". So then replacing h with r seems obvious. Evidently the letters h & r, b & n, V & L are interchangeable.

Finally doing the character replacement we end up with:
"Log in at THF.org May 1 This is safe for now"

So the steps taken to decode are:
1.Convert numbers to ASCII
2.Decode with ROT-13
3.Reverse message
4.Do a character replacement

An outstanding question I have is whether the interchangeable letters are supposed to mean something. What's the significance of h & r, b & n, V & L?

I apologize for the long post and kiddie walk through the message decoding. But I was tired of being left out of the fun because I didn't understand how puzzles were solved. So I figured some might appreciate the primer and get more out of the game.
