Along with the scan, you should send what flag definitions we have in the roster, and see if they can verify the accuracy of what meanings we have so far, in case there's no one system and the last five flags are scattered across sets.

Donxkey,
Since there's no obvious instruction or question on the card, along with a scan, it might also be a good idea to explain to them that this is a *puzzle* and we're supposed to get some kind of message from it. This might save a step because what they get from it might not make sense to them, and they might just say "it's gibberish", without any explanation. Hopefully, they'll be able to identify *every* flag. Razz
Good luck! Wink

The bloke who got the first solve on this said on the perplexcity.com forums

I still don't know why the answer works so I'm still trying to reverse the card designer's logic! Believe me, trial and error of some of the logical links behind these flag-codes will lead someone else to crack this fairly soon.
so maybe we don't actually need to identify every flag. Maybe there's another connection that we've missed or can guess at Confused .

Yeah, I still kinda think it's a substitution cipher... Confused

Maybe it is not a substitution cipher but it be maybe a transportation cipher instead? (Seeing as a ship is a mode of transport)

I see we now have two solvers on this card so we must be close!

Congrats

Maybe some doublecross style nuggets are on the way Wink

Possible

The last two flags on the last mast are the same colours as K and H, but on their sides.

Now leap with me here.

The flag above them, is (in a system that I'll have to look up) an 'Ignore and Read from here signal' - will update with chapter and verse.

If you stand K and H on their sides you get a 'broad' V and I.

Broad-side Smile

VI could stand for 6, or Victory (Nelson's Ship).

I don't have the card to enter this but it seems like a possibility.

Broadside

Chimera245,

Liked your thinking.

Unfortunately I can confirm that the answer is not victory.

I feel bad now. I could have saved your solves. I'd tried that particular ship in both forms, but not because of any clever logic. I'd bought a speciality beer and the picture was very similar. I guess we've already had one clue which suggests we've got to think of some link between the codes, to arrive at an answer that doesn't need any code work, hence my try which I then thought was too stupid to share.

going with the turning the two flags for K+H to get V + I then sureley this would mean that the white red square with a cut out would be

H -with a cut out makeing a K?

only an idea so don't shoot me for it Smile

Just found this and I think it may be something to do with it. plz read

broadside doesn't just mean the side of the ship

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadside

ok probably already posted somewhere but as I said if this was an equation could it be the firing capasity?

also on the note of dropping flags on there side could explain the white red quartered flag that could be the one hinting to turn the flag round 90 degrees after decpiher.

Also note there are flags on the wikipedia link to hms victory but the imagae resolution is so bad you can't read the txt.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

flagship - well it is Smile
nelson chuequer
double yellow

this seems to definitly be the HMS victory or a ship that bears an uncanny resemblance, it is painted in the nelson chequer or *double yellow*

it being the flagship victory would also remove the union jack from the code.

Just like AndyAndyO I took a guess (just the one!) after loads of research into 'battle flag signals'/trafalgar/popham/nelson. I had turned up pretty much everything you seem to have discovered through this thread in the process and my guess just followed from that!

I haven't worked out is quite how the question (that's what I'm pretty sure the flag signals) is encoded but AndyAndyO and I will try to work backwards from the answer.

Other than to say the answer is in this thread already, I can't think of a suitable clue to give without making it completely obvious. doublecross is just more cunning than I am, if guesses it perhaps he'll be able to offer one Wink
