I even thought of it back then, but assumed someone else must have already tried it and failed. I probably should have looked at the number of failed attempts.

The more I think about it, the more I'm certain the flags on the card aren't intended to be decoded but simply:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
to illustrate the problem with using flag signals in the first place, you just can't rely on them Wink

Fortunately I solved it on my first guess so I've given myself nowhere near as much kicking as I did with Polar!

Solved, but not particularly indulging in kicking of self. Without having solved the flags the answer is one of a number of relevant possibilities.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that no-one has posted this before, but isn't the shape at down the top right edge of the card the coastline in the vicinity of Cabo de Trafalgar? Not that that helps you get any nearer the answer than you probably are already.

Laughing
Thanks for the subtle hints and managed to get the 10th solve even with an overly scratched card so I had to puzzle out what my code was!!!

haven't understood the kicking hints or reference to april 13th yet, so can say it's not

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
battle of trafalgar
england confides that every man will do his duty
engage the enemy more closely

looking forward to less subtlety and I'm sure I'll be kicking myself too

Somehow, I feel heavily responsible for insisting we focus on flag-deciphering, and being convincing enough for everybody to listen to me. Laughing

SORRY! Razz

(And I'm kicking myself before I even know what the answer is.)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Anyone tried Nelson's last messages:

Kiss me Hardy
Thank God I have done my duty

Or the ship that fired the Broadside that hit Victory:

Neptuno

I've seen mentions of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
H.M.S. Victory
and
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Victory
being tried and found not to work, but no mention of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
HMS victory (i.e. without the dots)

Can someone who hasn't locked their card out like a muppet (i.e. not me) check this one just to be thorough?

Seems this "three tries and you're locked for a day" is a bit irrelevant when you have a few hundred semi-orchestrated guessers...
