Badbarry - how did you find your match, was it by eye?

I'd love to say I wrote a complex programme that instantly churned out all the results, but it was just pot luck, and as Chris correctly (if rather irritatingly!) said, there are probably a number of other suspects out there. She just fitted the bill nicely - right height, right age, right charity, right time, right years, she had the special dispensations which meant her entry stood out, and she had even aged correctly between 265 and 268, something that many other duplicates have failed to do!

You sound like like understand this programming stuff, perhaps you should do one? Very Happy

Don't worry too much about him being snappy. I'd give it until tomorrow afternoon before we should call it a day.

Anyway, the best way to do this, as far as I'm concerned, is to download the whole site, which you can use wget for (although somebody uploaded it, zipped, at http://perplexcitycardcatalog.com/notes/www.polygonparkmarathon.com.tgz so you can get it there), then use grep to search for ranges for each value. We know that she's younger than or equal 26 and at least 22, height 5'6" or 5'7", time less than 4 hours. So get everything from 265 and 258 that fits those values, that should be small enough to be able to manually seperate male from female. Then manually check for the same name (better than uids, since it's possible that the same person can be entered in different races under different uids?), see what fits. If it's not been done by the time I get home today, I'll give it a bash.

Maybe we should get a list of possibles (like the one badburry found) and post them somewhere, and pick over them as well as send them to kurt, see if theres any names he recognises. Maybe He has seen an alias name in miranda apartment on a scrap of paper or something and thought nothing of it, but will remember if we sugest a few names to him? Add this to the email we NEED to send to show him we are working hard on it?

Good thinking, but if there's one thing that'll seriously tick off Kurt more than he already is it's a list of random names and "Anything look familiar?". We need to narrow it down to as few as possible before bothering Kurt with it.

For example, while we've called 4 hours the maximum time, it's likely to actually be convsiderably under that from what he's told us. Also, while the age is certainly between 22 and 26, it seems unlikely that it'd be much lower than 24, from what people have said. That kind of picking off of entries on the boudaries may be able to be done manually. Also, there's the matter of the charity. It seems very likely that she's supporting either MEND (we can't discount that either she really has BFS or that she decided it'd be a good idea to support MEND as part of her cover) or the Plant Preservation Project, but it'd probably be unwise to actually search for only entires including those charities. Since the number of duplicates that fit the more definite criteria is lilely to be low and managable, that kind of thing can be done manually (I think).

Which is to say he's found one person which fits that rather vague description.

Thanks for your confidence Chris. Quite frankly I've seen enough of those bloody names for a lifetime. I don't care if she's not the one, I'm going to PPC myself and when I get hold of Jean Morgan she's going to pay for her crimes (even though she might have committed any Twisted Evil ). Evil Genius, are you with me?

On yes indeed, with bells on. I can think of one or two people in PXC that need an attitude adjustment vis a vis this cube nonsense Wink This Jean Morgan person has much to answer for!

Has anyone tried to run the names through an OCR package?

We may be able to automatically update them all.

In a city of millions, it's a wonder that the global search didn't display more results for people saying 'Miranda' - or something that sounds like Miranda - even after some initial filtering. However, there were enough to be dealing with... I guess phonetic search can only do so much.

A couple of people emailed in and between them found two results that are interesting. The first was at about 10:40am yesterday, and the second occurred an hour later at 11:47am. Both seem to be people calling after Miranda and mentioning her hair - which, according to Violet, she dyed red. I think it makes sense - Miranda's obviously not using her 'real' name when talking to other people, but all the people who've seen her before at the library and know her name are obviously going to use it.

Looking at the locations of those two audio clips, she seems to be travelling west, out of the city. Yes, I'm a scientist and I know how ridiculous it is to make a conclusion based on two data points, but a few other things are worth mentioning here. Firstly, Miranda might know well enough to avoid public transport, but she won't know I'm doing this global search. Secondly, she needs to get out of the city, and with her boat diversion over the weekend, it wouldn't surprise me to see her heading in the opposite direction.

Thirdly, and most importantly, there's one town, north of the river and directly west of Perplex City (you can see it on the map, actually) called Drowsington. There's something she really needs there - Oxxypro.

It appears that Miranda entered the marathon as 'Jean Morgan' in 268 and in 265 - 'Jean' is the only person running in the marathon who matches all the things we know about Miranda (thanks for speeding up the search, everyone). The marathon website doesn't reveal a lot about 'Jean' apart from the fact that she had special dispensation to take a drug called Oxxypro.

Oxxypro is a quite powerful treatment for a condition that's similar to asthma. It's basically a respiratory disease, and while its root cause is not identical to asthma, its symptoms are. Oxxypro does a bunch of things like release antihistamines and relax the airway muscles, but the reason why it's specifically mentioned on the marathon website is because it increases oxygen uptake from the blood. This is obviously something that runners would be interested in, and so in order to not be disqualified after using it, you have to have special dispensation from a doctor.

Then there's the small matter of the stash of Oxxypro she had in the care package Violet picked up from Auger Park. When I saw Oxxypro mentioned in an email, I had an inkling that I'd seen it before somewhere. Looking at the first aid kit in her care package revealed the Oxxypro pills, which were identical to the pills I saw her take regularly when we were going out. She told me the pills were for Barrow-Feld...

Oxxypro is difficult to synthesise and tough to get hold of. Outside of Perplex City, it's only available in a few places. The one place nearby that Miranda could get more from is Drowsington, and by now, she'll need more; you normally need to take it every week or so, or more often if you're doing a lot of physical activity. Given that she's probably travelling everywhere on foot, and that I've got her supply, I'd say she needs more pills pretty soon.

I've just booked a ticket to Drowsington and a car should be here to take me to Grand Frederik's shortly. It shouldn't take too long to get there.

For our key-toting little uber-geek, Kurt's developing more and more of a death-wish...

I will have a complete searchable database by the end of today, so will use the parameters he gave us to come up with a list of possible suspects.

I've emailed Violet telling her Kurt's rushing off to Drowsington - don't want him getting in trouble by himself.

Of course, they could both end up in the bottom of the Mazy river wearing the most fetching concrete shoes..... but there you go. How are they ever going to realise their love for each other if they don't go through hideous life-threatening peril together??

badbarry - that was a really nice spot, and so quick off the mark as well, I was still fumbling around trying to work out how to look!
