6 + 6 + 06 The signs are p***ing me off!

* Rant Warning *

June 6, 2006 aka 6/6/06. My sister is freaking out thinking we are going to die on that day because 666 is the devil's number, and there is this whole big thisng on myspace about it. I put it out of my mind until I saw a billboard while I was with my girlfriend. "6 + 6 + 06 You have been warned." So my first thought is what crack head is putting up the money for this. My girlfriend then said see say another one. "6 + 6 + 06 The signs are all around you."

Ticked off that some myspace jerk is trying to scare the world into a panic I hit the internet to find this guy. Turns out it is a promotion for a new movie "The Omen 666"

Now before I get really mad I thought I would ask what other people think about it, and I thought you guys would be the best people to ask. As a group that likes to blur the line between reality and fiction, how do you feel about someone exploiting peoples fear and believes to promote a crapy horror remake?

Um, how is this any different from, say, a disaster movie using similar ominous-sounding slogans, or something like the Final Destination movies using slogans like "Death is coming for you," or any other movie promotion, for that matter? Rolling Eyes

Just because a few religious whackjobs decide to get antsy about it doesn't mean it's some sort of noteworthy blurring of the line between fiction and reality.

I mean, the first draft of Dan Carver's art asset sheet for the Beast had 666 items on it, which is where it got the name...

OMG ARGS ARE THE TOOLS OF THE DEVIL!!! Razz

See the diffrence here is that the billboards say nothing about the movie. It is just imply that the world is going to end.

I was going to list 666 reasons why this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard but it's getting late and I have to say my prayers and go to bed Twisted Evil

Maybe it's because I live in Hollywood that I just automatically knew it was for a movie and 2 seconds later thought "666...oh yeah...Damien...The Omen...another remake...could be cool".

Hearing that people are reacting to these billboards in such a manner is more scary to me than anything I've ever seen at the movies.

So... the world didn't end on June 6, 1006? You know a thousand years ago... Oh wait, that was during the DARK AGES wasn't it? Spooky. People have been thinking the world is going to end since... well... forever. The world survived the Dark Ages, Y2K, the break up of the Beatles, the popular vote not becoming president of the US... it will survive whatever will happen on June 6, 2006. Besides, the world is going to end December 26(?), 2012. The Mayan calendar says so. Razz

Ok OK! I'm chilling out. My sister still thinks the world is going to end (yes I tried the june 6 1006 thing on her already), but I am not going to be mad at the movie any more.

You should try and buy all of your sister's wordly possessions for a couple bucks if she thinks the world is going to end. It might not be the most ethical thing in the world to do, but you could probably at leat turn a small profit selling it back to her.

Er.. It wasn't any secret. It was well known that it's a promotion...
Anyway, the 6/6/06 is going to be a demonic day anyway, as it's exactly a year since I left good old Israel and went to.. Argentine.
Thanks, Satan.

It is a remake of the movie "The Omen". I just saw a preview, starring Julia Stiles, and it looks like it might be a decent upgrade. You can check the movie site here

Is it just me or is it just that page and thats it? All trailerslinks seem non-functional to me.

btw: The world is not ending when 666 is the number, it is just a marker that "the beast" is comming...
... the world being as it is who would notice?

Besides, we still have Arnie, Bruce, Jacky, Jet, Angelina and more to kick it's but back to where ever if it decides to come visit us.

I actually heard somewhere that they found an old copy of the bible and discovered the real number was "616". But the source I got it from wasn't very creible, so don't just go and spread it around.

Just to get what little theology there is to that one squared away, there's a few issues here:

1. This theory presumes that God uses the same calendar that the western world conventionally uses. While that's a widespread assumption, it seems...unlikely.
2. The number in the Greek text is indeed 666, but it's also a very plainly symbolic number.
3. Revelation, like most other writings of its genre and time, is filled with symbolic numbers. A brief listing:
Quote:
3=Divine elements. Trinitarian reference.
4=Earth or creation. Perhaps a reference to the four elements?
6=Falling short of perfection.
7=Divine perfection. Likely drawn from the days of creation.
10=Lots of whatever it gets applied towards. For example, the passages which refer to 144,000 being saved are a fairly clever tie in of 12*12*10*10*10, implying there's a whole lot of 12's. (See below)
12=The people of God throughout history. Twelve tribes of Israel, Twelve Apostles (even Judas was replaced to fill that number.)

4. Given the above, it's worthwhile to note that what we have then is three sixes, or an attempt to impersonate God. That shouldn't surprise us, really. That's been the temptation since Genesis 3. "You shall be like God..."

I realize that there are other interpretations and other readings of these passages, but most modern interpretations of Revelation are founded in the 19th century's deliberate neglect of history. (This was, unfortunately, more true in the Church than elsewhere.) What's above is generally accepted as the historical western interpretation of the text, going back to the second and third century Church Fathers. I can't speak authoratatively about what the Eastern church believes there, but I'd be surprised if it differed much.

So my counsel would be to ignore the signs, ignore the movie, and get back to whatever it was you were doing. Smile

movies do that all the time. I bet there are a lot of other people, just like you, who have no idea what the billboard is about, so they go searching the internet and asking people about it, until they find out its about The Omen, and now they are so hooked they are probably going to see it. Before Ghost busters came out, they had billboards up with a giant red "omit" symbol...no one had any idea what it was about. Then after awhile the ghost was added to the signs...still no idea...then the movie title...and release date, and the whole poster...by this time everyone is so interested they are going to see it.
As far as June 06/2006 goes...I dont see the end of the world...but I can imagine there will be some crazy satanist type figures sacrificing goats and whatnot....it will probably just be like halloween on cocaine.

You forgot the most obvious. At least for debunking the date.
How is 666 the same as 6.6. 2006? Almost the same is not good enough. (like 6 is almost 7 yeah right, imperfection is almost perfection)
Besides 666 is his number not his date.

I was kinda writing about and pondering this so...uhm... paradox indeed. Wink

Well, not only movies. I remember the satelite television back there on Israel... There were two of them.
"Yes", and "Hot". That was their names.
"Yes" was always good, it always had and has good content and stuff. I enjoyed it.
"Hot"... Well, it sucked. All the good thingies were back at "Yes", and there was very little things that "Yes" costumers should be geolous about. So one day, while I opened http://www.ynet.co.il/ , which is the biggest news site on Israel, I saw an alien. I was reading an article about "GameOn", ya know, the arcade thingie. And then I saw an alien. It was a freakin' scary alien. And it looked back at me. From that seat, where the computer was before of the window, I saw a lot of things. I saw a flying fish (Well, it seemed like one. Could never find out what happened), I saw a guy dressed as Chewbacca riding on a bike in the park (A real one), and I saw some real nasty spywarez, but heck, I never saw an alien. Not on my computer, that's sure.
Well... The aliens visited a lot of people. And freaked them out too. So after three months of conspiracies, I finally discovered, on an article on the same site, that "Hot" was making a new Sci-Fi channel. Gee, way to go.
So yes, it had the best movies and classic series I could think of for Sci-Fi, but I didn't moved to "Hot". They fucked me, "Yes" not. And heck, "Yes" better content.
The channel went down five monthes later.
