Planting "clues", and definition of ARG?

I'm trying to plan a small-scale ARG, and was wondering if there was a policy in posting clues on other websites that you don't own. For example, would you be able to post a Wikipedia article for an aspect of your game? (because I know this was a problem with the Jamie Kane entry).

Also, I was wondering if there was an overall view of what is involved in an ARG. The one I am working on would involve emailing/telephoning characters, finding hidden parts of websites, and at one point, finding a sound file. I wasn't sure if this would classify as an ARG, or a Timewaster.

Sorry if these things have been posted before Smile

I would say the Wikipedia people would frown on that, as it wasn't a factual/real thing. Depending on what the information is and the type of board would be the deciding factor as to what you could post. UnFiction frowns on PMs posting in game material on the board. Immersion Unlimited, you are allowed to post that info. Other boards you would need to read the TOS and/or contact the administration.

As MageSteff, it depends on the policies of the website itself.

Wikipedia hates fake content. That's not acceptable to the site owners so you shouldn't do it. Doing it on the majority of forums also seems bad because it's a form of intrusive spam.

Craigslist is perfect for putting up fake announcements. They don't really care what goes up there. Or maybe Slashdot comments of a flickr photo.

So pick the right sites Wink

Real stuff can be/contain a clue too.

You could use/make clue's that are actually true. I mean point to factual stuff already in exsistance that in the frame of your game gets a new meaning.

fi. If your story has some equipment that is missing a part you could point to a real site where that equipment is 'explained' and so find what is missing.

Or an article in Wiki that discusses an idea that would bring your players further in your way of thinking.

Or some similarity to a sheaksperean drama that would point toward what would happen next. Or even some obscure detective novel like in "The bonecollector". (in the movie he book is leading the detectives to the last victim..getting the book however...)

How to do it is up to your creativity.

btw: Sounds like an ARG to me. But.... it is only an arg if it gets played and it 'transforms' reality into an alternate reality. Wink

Since Jenna was asking about (please correct me if I am wrong) posting new and possibly fictional information, adding such information to Wikipedia would be a bad idea. Especially considering that Wikipedia has such a nice article on ARGs there, we don't want anyone adding that we post fictional information to sites that try to post factual information. Use a good neighbor policy, i.e. You don't post about discovering signs of intelligent life on Saturn on an Astronomy board that has a lot of people from NASA posting to it, you as PM will get slapped down by that board's admin. Posting the same material to Immersion Unlimited will get it talked about in a good way.

Did not mean to add to Wiki. Just use whats there and give it a different meaning within the alternate reality of the game.

Just as an alternative to adding yourself.
