A little note from the 13th Labour Client Wranglers:

As you are probably aware we are having congestion problems with the server. This is due to the increased speed of the client, but your work units will still get to us. We are actively working on a new client which will help compensate for this, so stay tuned!

Keep them clients rolling Smile

Laughing Well I'd love to keem my 7 clients rolling.. if only they could contact the server and dl work units... hehe. I'm just givin' ya a hard time, I know scalability is a big issue here, and I applaud your efforts to make it bigger and better.

btw, it's awesome to come home and find a pile of old computers sitting in your room doing nothing at all.... add a little network bridge, a kvm switch perhaps, reformat, add win2k and 13Labour.exe, and boom: a mini beowulf cluster right in your own home Smile

I'm not downloading any work units at all! Im just on constant retry - is this all due to congestion or has something more significant happened to the server?

At about 11.00pm last night (4pm GMT) the Web Server dropped off the network.

Just one of those things unfortunately.

I reinstated it about 5 mins ago (6.30am).

Nothing in particular, just one of those things - though perhaps related to network traffic.

Client 1_2_0 (which reduces WS load by a factor of 10) is in testing now, and will start rolling out to beta clients tonight.

This should alleviate those issues.

A "Next/next-next version" suggestion...

What's the chance of it saying "New version available, do you want to upgrade? Y/N" on startup, when there's a new version? I'm pretty anti competely automatic updating for security reasons, but something that allows me to check here first then say yes or no would be pretty cool.

I'm asking because it's a bit of a pain copy/pasting the new version onto every machine that's running it every time - if I could just restart it and say "Yes" on each machine that it's on that would be handy.I know it comes a distant 2nd/3rd/4th after optimising the search and so on, but if it could be done that would rock Smile

The NIC on the Primary Web Server has shut itself off from the Network again.

I am not re-instating it immediately (I want to do some diagnostics), plus it will give me some opportunity to roll out the 1_2_0 client to more testers.

OK - I think what is happening that the Firewall is thinking that there is a DOS attack occurring on this port and shutting down the connection.

I'll accelerate the testing of 1_2_0 (which essentially does away with the problem by scaling back traffic, and look into making the Firewall more tolerant.

:S So what it means is that we're doing so many work units now that the firewall thinks we're trying to shut it down.

Hmmmmmmmm.

Oh, and you guys are doing a great job on this, you really should get some sleep though Razz

I'm sure everyone here appreciates the work you've done for the project and making sure that it gets faster and faster. Smile

Right.

I got my 'Man who does' in and he has confirmed my suspicion on the H/W Firewall issue. I've made some adjustments (recommended) which may actually make the congestion queue's a tad longer but the connection as a whole more stable.

1_2_0 is now in first stages of beta testing - and it reduces network traffic by a factor of 10. As we were running sweet as with about 1/3 the current load - this gives us quite a bit of room for growth. The Mega Units is works with are also adjustable in size - in case we do expand even more.

Bear with us through the testing period if you will - this will take most of the weekend (with increasing numbers of testers) - with a likely major client roll out early next week.

Sorry again for the brief interruptions - but we are still getting through it.

I have to say, excellent job on this. Here's an odd question, if the servers are shutting down because the code is so good, why don't we have the program download like 10 WUs at a time? That would require 10 times the time to crunch and the time on the server would be for most people, minimally more.

Just a suggestion. I can see how it could be complicated since it would involve storing things on the computer but it might help.

Or just make WUs bigger?

That's exactly what version 1_2_0 will do.

Excellent. My computer is up and ready to crunch numbers.

I apologise if this has been mentioned before and I am pretty awful on a computer and don't even know how you guys managed to get this thing going but here is my idea, sorry if it's not very good !

Going back to an earlier post has anyone thought the key could be an alphanumeric something like a number plate where you use numbers and letters to spell a word (i.e K1 NGS for kings?)

Here is what I got when I tried cows13 in alphanumeric as the puzzle is the thirteenth labour (obviously) and there are cows on the bottom of the puzzle card.

The decoded file for key 'C0w513' vaguely looks like a PCX ver. 3.0 image data bounding box [28060, 23278] - [63886, 64369], 205-bit image,.

I also tried a version of hercules which looked something like h3rcu135 and also had a result about a bmp image, I remember reading that someone wrote the answer could be a picture instead of a question so I thought I'd mention it. Maybe the key is an alphanumeric of something to do with perplex city i.e l05tcu83 for 'lost cube' etc. just an idea in case it saves everyone months of work, again I apologise for my ignorance of all of this complicated stuff !
