This is, without doubt, the most excitement Drowsington has seen in a long time.

Kurt told me what happened at the pharmacy so I walked up the gangway from the quay onto the ferry and waited. I think I was pretty calm about it. I had this icy sense of righteous anger. Bring her on.

I know the idea was to stop her getting on the ferry, but I felt kind of disappointed when she reached the quay and pulled up short. I stood at the top of the gangway, and she just looked at me, calculating, assessing - wondering if I was worth the fight.

She ran. She had a fifty metre head-start on me and she ran round the marina, heading west. I tried to keep pace with her but... you know the rest.

Kurt's on his way. A fine pair we are. At least we've kept her north of the river.

My money is on Violet in any such catfight...

So she got away. I tried, I really did, but she was too fast for me. I say 'she' because neither of us knows what to call 'her' anymore. She doesn't deserve a name.

Kurt caught up with me at the quayside. He looked exhausted. The hospital gave him some painkillers for the burns, but I don't think they expected him to be chasing fugitives. When he saw me, he tried to hobble faster than he could comfortably go, and somehow his stick got caught up under his foot and he tumbled over. He went down hard on the damaged leg, and I heard his gasp even though I was still quite far away. It's just not right - Kurt has always been faster than me, always teased me for not wanting to train with him. It's not right that he should be slower now.

I ran over and helped him to sit up. There was blood on his ankle, by the brace, and I pulled up his trouser leg to take a look even though he kept saying "it's OK, it's fine". He'd managed to tear open one of the smaller gashes on his leg. I pulled a handful of tissues from my bag and held them there to stop the bleeding. I looked up, and Kurt was looking at me, but when he caught my eye he looked away, out across the harbour.

I said: "We could stop now. Before you... before either of us gets hurt more."
He didn't answer. After a few moments, he pulled my hand away. His leg wasn't bleeding anymore. He rolled down his trouser leg and, leaning on his stick, got to his feet again.

We hailed a taxi and drove up and down the road out of town, between the river and the ruins. No sign of her. There were fields of maize all along one side of the road, so she could have been standing ten feet away from the verge and we would never have seen her.

Eventually we told the taxi to take us back to Kurt's boarding house. The local police were waiting for us, and Kurt gave them a statement about how 'troubled' she's been, and how she's obviously just distressed. It's taking all my self-control (and you know how limited that is) not to shake him by the lapels and tell him to turn her in - I mean, we know she killed Cymbalisty, and today just proved that we shouldn't be tackling her on our own. But I've seen Kurt stare at a puzzle for 36 hours straight, and he's got that same look about him now.

According to the map, she could stay in the fields and in the woods all the way to Stone Mills without breaking cover. It would take her a day or two, but she's horribly light on her feet, so I wouldn't put it past her. She'll be back at top speed again, too - she did get her supply of Oxxypro from the pharmacy.

We've been keeping an eye on the ferry this afternoon in case she doubles back. I'll stay at the boarding house with Kurt tonight, after the ferry service stops.

Under other circumstances, this might even feel like a holiday - a day by the river in a chintzy little town. I wish I could enjoy it.

Blargh and a half! Evil or Very Mad

The witch escapes again. Well, I suppose they COULD try to follow her and predict the next location, calling on some friends in the know (ANNA ANNA ANNA) to tag along and provide one more person in the hunt. She might be very emotionally unstable, but I think that we need as many people as we can manage. For all we know, Mrs. Heath is a sprinter, too. I would even say to shake Scarlett out of bed and set up a sting or some elaborate, complex, Rube-Goldberg-esque plot to get her.

At this point, anything goes.
The woman is on the lamb, but not out of the woods!

At this juncture, I'm at rather a loss as to what to suggest, and to whom...

Clearly, Kurt is racing - or at least limping slowly - down a very dark path indeed. I don't know if I'm quite convinced that he has some sort of death wish at this point or if he is simply prioritising this task over and above everything else, his own health included. In which case, should we be looking at trying to safeguard the ongoing health (and lifespan) of our favourite member of the CRT? If so, how? Who, if anyone, will make him see sense?

The other alternative, which is equally likely, is that Kurt simply has to face his demons here. Without following this to it's logical conclusion, he'll never be able to look himself in the mirror again. He realises this, and thus has developed this gritty single-mindedness about him, and he will pursue Miranda to the end, no matter the cost to him personally.

Umm. Much as I hate to say it, because Miranda could provide some rather lovely information if we caught her... would it be worth Kurt's life?

Melodramatic, I know, but I'm getting the rather nasty feeling that that's where things are going.

Even if we passed it onto someone - Anna, even - and told Kurt we had so he could rest up. Or something.

Throwing up ideas as always; obviously Miranda's heading west, though, yeah. Beyond the fact that she's fleeing Kurt and Violet, what's west beyond that next brown square on the map?

Ok, so Kurt and Violet need some help to catch Miranda. Anna has been mentioned a couple of times, but she's probably not up to the job. How about asking Anna to get Flemming and some of his other volunteer police force friends to help out? He may be reluctant after the last time he helped, but it might just work.

I guess what we need to work out would be the consequences of getting those in blue involved...how much illegal stuff have Kurt and Violet done, and how much inappropriate appropriation of Academy resources. Could we get them banged up or sacked?

Otherwise it seems obvious that they ain't going to catch her on their own. How about getting Scarlett and the Marmalejo College hockey team involved? Hockey teams are scary.

I think they're okay on this count, actually. Kurt didn't actually hack Cognivia, he used a legitimate password. Not his, but I don't think that's illegal. Anyway, he was her boyfriend, so had a legitimate reason for being around her house at the explosion.

Violet probably shouldn't have been poking around in the library personnel files but that doesn't need to be mentioned to the police, except maybe as a suggestion that Cognivia would have used the library to verify Miranda/Helen's existence leading the police to find the same anomaly using their own resources.

Miranda did hold a knife to some poor woman's throat in a public place. Even if they don't mention the Ceretin 6 and Cymbalisty stuff that should be enough in itself to get the police to track down their missing person.

I think the more important question is:
Can we get them SHacked up?

(before Kurt inevitably dies at the hands of Miranda, Violet goes on a vendetta to slaughter her, ends up going to jail for 20 years for murder, Sente gets sacked from the Academy due to the scandal, and the Cube explodes destroying Earth entirely!!

or before they just give up and go home, whichever happens first Smile )

We need to start campaign to get Kurt to ask for help on this. As noted, he's in no condition to catch Miranda on his own. Additionally, he's becoming too single-minded in his pursuit of Miranda. He's admits to having a conversation with himself, but can't even tell himself (in the guise of Miranda) why he's still chasing her. I'm for justice, but this needs to be turned over to the proper authorities so they can put the man-power and resources into it. I'm sympathetic to Kurt's need to capture the woman who decieved and betrayed him, but his pursuit has caused a building to blow up and a woman to be held at knife point. He feels guilt about what has already happened, how much more guilt will he feel when someone in the next town gets hurt because he has not back up? Not to mention who much he'll hurt Violet if he gets himself killed.
