I'll take a sprite!

Quit crying! You geniuses should be making you own ARG's since your so good at it.
I'll tell ya what, I'll happily buy a sprite, visit Monster.com and consider reading a book if that will support this whole Lost Experience. I think this is a total blast! And if this proves effective for advertisers, imagine the money that will pour in to the experience and how far it can go. Clues hidden in Music CD's, major motion pictures, political adverts, NASA photographs. Cooporate sponsored contests based on solving clues rather than dumb luck, etc...
I encourage everyone not to look at these discreet advertisements and tie-ins as cheap ploys to extract cash from your weak, brainwashed, lemming hands but rather as an opportunity for YOU to use your power (power=money) to ensure a GREAT Lost Experience and continuity in the evolution of this television shows phenomenal obliteration of prime time televisions glass ceiling. Lost is bringing television to a whole new level.
So, if you buy a soda tomorrow, buy a sprite this time. BIG DEAL!, Hell, if you hate sprite then buy one for a bum on the street. If you read alot or just need some kindling for your campfire this summer, buy the darn book!
Let's see just how far we can take this thing, because it's OURS!

Me too. I'm willing to overlook slight tears in the curtain for a free ARG experience and try not to have expectations about what the ARG should be. I mean, I "overlooked" my OOG phone call from the PMs from Art of the Heist and I was rewarded with an ingame live event that only a handful of players got to experience (and a free Treo!) Not that I'm saying that I can be paid off to overlook things (although I might be Wink ).

I *CAN* overlook it, but I do think the Sprite placements thus far have been pretty poorly done.. I don't understand any possible IG reason that the Hanso Foundation would redirect us to an advertisement, which then gives a password that allows access to sensitive areas of their own site. It just seems screwy.. I'm willing to go along with it, but it definitely doesn't help the immersion.

As for being contacted OOG to fill out a release and stuff for a live event, I think we can all understand why that's necessary... I even got a copy of the site release form on accident, which pulled back the curtain even more than the form I was supposed to get, but that's understandable. Legal documents, releases, etc.. are something there's no way around in today's society, whereas I'm sure there could've been other ways to have Sprite advertisements that something so obviously out of place as this. Heist, overall, did an excellent job of promoting the A3 and the Treo 650, while still keeping things very well in game.

Either way, I won't let 'a crumby commercial' ruin the game for me, though I still feel it could've been done in a more immersive fashion.

Wasn't that what Orbital Colony was?

Anyway, I didn't care much about the sponsorship. I hadn't realized that subLYMONal was a Sprite ad, I probably wouldn't have made an issue if Sprite paid for the ad, and while I was a little disappointed that the LOST sticker appeared on my copy of Bad Twin, I expected it because it's part of a franchise.

I think what everyone else is saying is true, though - the PMs should take what the corporation is telling them to add, and figure out a creative way to work the advertisings in.

Heck, if Sprite was a proud sponsor of Hanso, you could STILL link us to the sublymonal website. All you need to do is have Persephone hack into THAT one, too. Would give us more games to play, trying to figure out exactly what she did there to get our clue. It would be a mite more challenging than "click the television" which was a little dry for my taste.

Anyway, until then, let's keep complaining Razz Clearly, our discussion over the "1 or 6" issue got their attention, maybe this would, too.

Hey, don't forget about Apple computers, E3, Gran Turismo, Coachella, and various car dealerships around the country. Heck, we even plugged Perplex City at one point. We pimped ourselves out with frequent and lustfull pride!

And ya, this whole Sprite thing kinda turned me off. Esp. the "paid for by sprite" quote on the bottom of the Hanso commercial.

I think everyone that's posted in this thread have perfectly valid points including the people that don't mind the ads. The only thing is (and the reason I started this thread), They could have advertised in a way that didn't pull you out of the game. Advertisers are creative people. Infact, the whole ARG thing started (as I understand it) with someone trying to find a new way to advertise. The Sprite and Monster.com comercials in the phone lines "hold" music was fine...non-intrusive, subtle. But when the TV commercial has the Sprite logo, or worse, when the website they lead you to is obviously a Sprite website, it just pulls you out of the game. They haven't established any connection with Sprite in the story line, and like a previous poster said, why would Sprite websites lead to hidden documents on the Hanzo website...It just doesn't work with the story. The reason these ARGs are so interesting and sucessful are because they're an emmersive storyline. Notice that nobody's complaining about Monster.com...the advertising has so far been very non-intrusive and has done it's job so far. How many people are constantly scouring Monster.com now for resumes with some link to THF. Monster.com is getting tons of new visitors, and ARGers aren't bothered.

I'm not against the advertising itself...hell, ARGs aRE advertisements. All the PMs had to do was to establish some subtle story based link with Sprite and Hanzo, and people would be out buying Sprite and looking for clues on the bottle.

Anyways, I'm not pissed about it, just slightly dissappointed that there's been this much done wrong so early in the game. It does start to feel like inexperienced PM's handling this one. I'll still play this one all the way through though...I just hope they learn and improve it as we go along.

the biggest issue is that the pms are prob not looking at this site and since the discussion is taking place here they will never see it. By not seeing it they will not understand what is going on. Of course there is prob going to be a post game chat but i doubt they even know we exist.

first of all I bet they dont even know that this group even exists.

Second of all I agree the lost sticker on the bad twin books was a very very bad move.

I am not feeling the connection that we are supposed to feel.

First off, you'd more then likely lose that bet. Google reads for "Lost Experience" ARGN's Lost coverage post a month back. (them simply responding to ARGN shows they are reading.) Unfiction's 4th on google for "Omnifam" too.

If they care or not, is another story. But They are watching and reading. They might even have a mole or two just incase we completely get lost (this is supposed to be common user friendly)

And second. I agree. The book is a great idea, but you could have put the lost logo on an outside packaging if you wanted people to associate it. That why when the plastic comes off and the book is read, your better off.

Give them some slack, this is their first offical big ARG. So far, given it's scale, it's pretty good.

Just throwing my views out there, I think you're all a little elitest. Conpare this with the same people who hate a band that they liked simply because it went on MTV or something like that. Also see: Sell Outs. It makes no sense because the game should be about the game. Trust me, I'm sure some of these other ARGs you loved would have gladly accepted a check from Sprite to do something as small as involve Sprite's marketing campaign in an IG site and have a small "sponsored by sprite" marking on the site.

And I REALLY don't see what the big issue is. For all we care or need to care, Hanso is just some other big company that advertises as well (the commercial). And this whole ARGs just a big way to get more people to watch LOST, not to mention the fact that Bad Twin's been thrown around these sites more times I can count. Bleh, if the sprite Ad really does turn you off from the game, good riddance. Less crap flying around.

For heavens sake, we watch Lost on the TV - complete with all the adverts in between - and those adverts help pay for the TV channel and/or the programs, in the UK we now have 'Drama sponsored by.....' and surely thats how soaps started.

Theres no such thing as a free lunch...

Enjoy the game, take as much notice or not of the adverts, and remember, we all have to earn our living somehow.

I completely agree. At least it doesn't come out and say "HANSO, brought to you by sprite. Sprite is good. Drink sprite."

And then on the bio page be all like "Thomas Mittlewerk drinks sprite!"

"Buy some today!"

Besides, at the end of WIBS, there we're HUGE GMC marketing stuff. Heck, the complimentary painting was HOSTED ON THE GMC SITE! If you're whining about sprite, get over it. I like sprite. And I like this ARG. This is one of the best arg's since The Beast, so just get over it.

Shocked

A week in into it with no puzzles and already it's on the level of The Beast? Wow, you sound more like a plant than my Geraniums do.

Okay, maybe it's not quite on the level of The Beast yet, but it's still pretty good so far. I don't care if sprite ads are thrown in, just get over it.

stop telling people to "get over it" - it's an opinion Smile

Been a bit quiet in here today. Do things normally progress this slowly?
