Evidence: The Last Ritual (Majestic: Redeux?)

Looks like someone's trying to tap into the ARG market...

From http://igo.ampednews.com/gamehub/2764/previews/561/:

Quote:
We can't object, your honor: the evidence is in favor of high quality this time. Sorry—that sounded cliché. On the bright side, Dreamcatcher's upcoming adventure title Evidence may be a breath of fresh air in a genre as stale as last weeks' bagel. This sequel to Missing is like a combination of Silence of the Lambs and EA's now-defunct Majestic. The result is more than just a little creepy: it's disturbing. But in a good way.

One of Evidence's most original touches is its despondent tone. For example, one puzzle forced us to watch a bedraggled young woman, filmed in full-motion video, blink us her clue, since she couldn't speak. She was seemingly a kidnap victim: the battered blonde was covered with cuts and bruises, and her face spoke volumes to the torture she endured. But the unsettling atmosphere isn't all that makes Evidence special: hint delivery is also unique.

Gamers that remember Electronic Arts' Majestic will recall how that game sent its clues via websites, emails, and phone calls. Evidence isn't that intrusive, but it does use your browser and email client to deliver clues to puzzles. One puzzle we saw sent us to a website looking for a combination of letters. Once we found those letters, we were able to solve the in-game puzzle. You can also interact with the true-to-life video, such as an early puzzle that allows you to untie another victim by clicking on the rope binding her wrists. Other puzzles may require you to use a zooming video tool to enlarge the screen, or even adjust the contrast to reveal items you'd otherwise miss.

Of course, Majestic was a huge failure, possibly because it required payment for continued content. Evidence is not an episodic experience, so is more likely to attract adventurers looking for a horror fix. We're keeping an eye on Evidence, so keep your own eyeballs glued to this space for more information as it becomes available. Now pass the fava beans and a nice chianti.

Nice. I'm just wishing they did another ARG for the Halo series...Smile

This isn't anything new, since this game's predecessor, Missing Since January, did the same thing more-or-less. You should try it out first if you're interested; it's been out for years and costs $20 direct from Dreamcatcher.

Oh! I really didn't have much info on this game until now. Thanks for posting that press release thingy. And yes... Evidence is the "sequel" to the PC game Missing Since January. That game was pretty ARG-y and is still pretty darn fun. So... they did already tap into the ARG market, just that many people didn't seem to care. Confused

Well, obviously they did or else there wouldn't be a sequel... Whatever! Thanks for the news. Smile

"Evidence : The Last Ritual" is the US title for the french "In Memoriam : Le dernier Rituel" the game , which is expected to hit the shelves on september 21 , is developped by ubisoft and will be published by The Adventure company is the US ( still no date ) :

Description:

In this PC CD-ROM game the notorious serial killer "The Phoenix" is back and the authorities need your help to catch him once and for all. Using an innovative blend of Windows® gameplay and the Internet, the player will explore key cities in Europe and North America. They will receive actual emails from virtual characters, scour real and fictitious websites, analyze video excerpts, photos, soundtracks, and piece together evidence to break the Phoenix's embedded codes. From the creators of "Game of the Year" MISSING: Since January.

In this 3rd release it's the corpse of Jack Lorski ( main detective in the previous games ) himself that has been found terribly mutilated in scotland and we will still be pursuing the serial killer known as the phoenix .

Jack Lorski death article as appeared in liberation ( big french newspaper ):

Other than the 500 websites between real and fictious the game claims , the big innovation is the phone calls ( paying ) and probably some physical interaction too .

also some video teasers in french , there are 3 , look down in the page :

EDIT : There is a big french community dedicated to this game and actually The Phoenix has been teasing us for some monthes now with clues ( not related to this game though ) ... anyway Smile

My thoughts

I actually picked this up last night to try and tempt my wife into args a bit (since she loves serial killer thrillers). While I haven't gotten very far into it, the flow of e-mails from the NPCs and the variety of external websites have been fantastic so far. Also, doing the game packaging in a police evidence bag was brilliant and certainly helped tempt me into buying it.

The clues/puzzles have been pretty straightforward so far, but I'm going to assume it gets harder towards the end.

I know, old, old topic, but I just bought this game last night for much the same reason jwiv did... Evidence bag packaging. Smile

I've had fun with the game so far. Played it for an hour before bed (not exactly the brightest idea I've had lately). Note: one hour.

This one hour of gameplay spawned no less than ten (10!!) emails from various characters. That was a ... Bit annoying, really.

However, it was quite interesting and a little creepy to wake up this morning to find an email from "The Phoenix" himself. I received it at 2:30 this morning.
The Phoenix wrote:
Are you tired, little friend? You can't even hear us knocking at your door.

That right there sent chills down my spine.

OK, yeah. Bad me for bumping this out of retirement. But it was either that, or start a new thread. I think this was the right choice...

It's my birthday tomorrow, and I had mentioned earlier today to a friend that I was getting into ARGs, and that I was involved in one based on Dexter. So he got a REALLY weird looking grin on his face and rummaged in a drawer that he keeps games he's beaten and couldn't bear to sell. "Consider this a gift. I think you'll get a kick out of it." So I take it home with me, and install it. After registering my email, and seeing the opening video, I'm already thinking, 'Dear God, what have I gotten myself into?" I had to stop the game at the blinking puzzle, because I am home by myself until sometime tomorrow. I'm kind of scared to play it now.

Also, the UPS guy just knocked to drop off a package for me and the knocking made me freak for a second!

Honestly, i'm amazed the game is working for you Faerie_Detective, but more power to you.

I have both games, got them very recently. Neither games works properly, the emails either didn't come at all, or came days after i decided to stop playing. I ended up half cheating by finding a website that listed all the emails and the cues that triggered them so i could semi-follow along, which just killed all suspension of disbelief. I emailed the game makers, publishers, anyone i could think to contact - and none responded. Also, because it i indeed a sequel, there are a TON of references to the previous game which you may not get, but i don't think it actually affects game playability.

I had tried Missing: Since January a few weeks ago, because I'd gotten a copy at a thrift store. But it wouldn't connect to server because of a server name change, and I couldn't get the patch they made to install. But I'm using yahoo mail, and everything is going well for Evidence. I stopped for several hours, first to hang out with a friend, then to sleep. I woke u with two messages basically asking where I'd gone and why wasn't I working on the case, and one from Phoenix that really got me, since I was home alone at the time. XD

Any more like this?

After playing Evidence: The Last Ritual and its predecessor, In Memoriam, I've been actively seeking another PC game like this one. Does anyone know of any games that heavily rely on the internet and e-mails, or one as realistic?

Thanks!
