Did you get that from some kind of official source, Max?

EDIT:

Chess without the trivia? I am so screwed. I kept having trouble figuring out which piece was which and which king I was supposed to checkmate. I NEEDED the trivia questions. And no way to go back and practice with the interface now. Sad

Just checking: is the one with the big cross on top the king or queen?

bishop and knight were obvious, so fleur-de-lis = rook?

I had a hard time with the chess too. Couldn't tell anything apart. I just went back and looked at your pictures though and the queen has an upside down triangle (or chalice, which is female) and the kind has the right side up triangle (or blade, which is male) All the other pieces are accounted for except for the rook so I guess your right that the fleur-de-lis is the rook.

Looking at the first picture, from left to right starting at the top, I think it goes like this:

Black rook
Black queen
Black pawn
Black pawn
White rook
White queen
Black pawn
Black bishop
Black bishop
Black knight
Black pawn
White knight
White pawn
A whole row of white pawns
White rook
White king

Does that look right to anyone else? I had trouble determining which was which myself, so I just Googlewhacked the answers to the questions.

To my eye, that all looks correct. To restate, here's which piece is which, as identified by the symbols that make up their bottom halves:
  • Pawn - Greek letter phi
  • Knight - Ankh
  • Bishop - Cross (plus sign?)
  • Rook - Fleur-de-lis
  • Queen - Triangle, point facing down
  • King - Triangle, point facing up

He doesn't say that there will be a chess challenge without questions on the final exam, he just says that solving them without looking at the questions may prove helpful if you reach the finals.

This may just mean that there will be a chess puzzle in the finals, but the questions will be very difficult, thus solving in the standard chess puzzle fashion would be easier/faster.

Or maybe this is just wishful thinking, because I have no clue how to solve those stupid things. Dunno

Well I am gonna have to ask this again. Do we checkmate the black or the white King? I can seem to recall which king we had to checkmate and I am sure there were no instructions to the effect saying which king had to be checkmated right?

I'm pretty sure it was always the black King you had to checkmate.

The first chess picture above,

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3057/2255/1600/sol16of24.0.jpg

shows the black King disintegrating into a cloud of dust.

Also, I agree that it is too bad that the puzzles have been taken down, leaving us nothing to train on. I find the blotch collection puzzles particularly elusive.

Well, I submitted my form and received the Thank You For Registering screen at 1:10 ET, apparently not quickly enough to get in.

They had serious problems with their servers that day and I think it screwed a lot of people. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up not even having 10,000 finalists, but instead have a storeroom full of cryptexes (cryptices?) that they're too embarassed to give out after their mistake. There's probably a good chance the grand prize winner could have come from someone who got screwed out of their opportunity to compete in the final phase.

Sour grapes much?

I think the servers did quite well, especially under the extreme circumstances. The pages loaded quickly even though they were pretty graphic intensive. The only problem was with the blocker thingy, but since people were hammering the site so much, it was probably necessary.

I got in because I submitted my registration at about 2-3 minutes after question 24 went live. Is it that hard for you to believe that 10,000 people could have registered before you? 10 minutes is a long time. There could have been millions trying to win.
