I slap you with a fish.

Er, is the "trout" thing in any way derived from mIRC? I haven't been on IRC in, oh, 8-9 years but I vaguely remember some smacking with fish-like things.

Trout

Since I'll likely never be able to.

I would answer Yes, as that's where I know it from, the pre-installed macro called slap!

Actually, if you click on the trout picture, it takes you to an explanation of its origins within this community. However, it doesn't say that Cloudmakers got it directly from mIRC. Which begs the question, did mIRC get the idea from somewhere else? Hmm...

ok, you caught me reading the forum from the office. Back to work!

apparently, it pre-dates mIRC! from wikipedia:

A famous feature associated with mIRC even though it predates it is the ability to "slap" another user by right-clicking the target's nickname. This results in the line of text "A slaps B around a bit with a large trout".

edit: if only I had scrolled down the teeniest bit

also from wikipedia:
"The sentence "A slaps B around a bit with a large trout" is thought to be a reference to Monty Python's sketch The Fish-Slapping Dance."

I'm sure that I saw something about xccr.com this morning but I don't see it now. I hate to ask because I'm going to feel stupid if I over-looked it but . . .

Was it, is it still here?

Thanks in advance.

Tab and flash question

I have a question about THF.org's use of flash and wasn't sure were to put it.

I now know that you can find "active" flash keys on a web page by pressing tab, The keys or region will be surrounded by a yellow frame.

My question is about the text on THF.org's home page in the box below the clock. The text is about the MHA and the last line reads "Find out more here."
These wors are a link to the MHA page, but do not show up as a flash key, when pressing tab. There are few links on the web site that behaves this way.
Is there a reason this link would not show up via TAB? I think it is a normal html link (href?), but why would they use it here and not in other places? Is this due to multiple programers using slightly different methods?

The reason I am wondering is that if some links could be hidden from the TAB search, then others may be as well. Some of which may have no text or text of the same color as its background.

I can't tell you why but all the links in the above boxes get skipped with TAB.
I understand that you can turn this whole feature off by just not implementing it, but if they do it for some they would most likely do it for all of them.
However, those boxes are different, probably because they are in-text links. Just guessing here.
Or maybe because they are only references, like you said. Not the actual original link, you know...I think that was what you said, anyway.

I noticed another smaller hotspot inside the box next to the ad, but that was just a link from the text box above. If you scroll it down...got me there for a second. Laughing
I think that might be even a bit of sloppy work?
Not complaining here or anything. Smile

Why are you green?

When I came into the forum index I noticed that the name of a user browsing the forum was Green. I think it was konamouse or something like that. Is there a reason he/she is green?

At the bottom of the main Unforums index page, you'll see:

The color of a person's name (in the "users browsing" list) tells you what status or level of power a user has within the forum they are reading.

Besides a fairly boring fish, what the devil is a trout? It must be something that came about while I was away.

Viola--check out this thread

Trout

(moderator adding a bit here:)
Because this is a Trout-Free-Thread (as it says in the topic), the trout placed here is just to demonstrate that you can click on it and also be taken to an explanatory post about it. Except...

The question should perfectly valid in this thread -- if it hadn't already been asked on this same page! Scroll up to that post -- how embarassing.

Thank you. However now I am curious as to the meaning of the acronym RTFM. All I can come up with is Ride The Flying Metatarsal. Which would be bony and may cause discomfort on long trips.

Oh dear. Well, let's just say it came from the world of software and customer support, in which they frequently just want to scream at the phone for people to just Read The F****** Manual -- of course, you are free to pretend they were saying Friendly manual, or Forgiving, or Forgotten, or... *ahem*. You get the picture.
