Well I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that while there may not be 10k different puzzles of each type, there are a lot of different ones. I think that poster is wrong. If we failed a puzzle during the competition, it would reset as the SAME puzzle. Only if you backed out entirely and started over could you get a completely new one. (I assume that there were only so many "new" ones available, but certainly enough to not make it worth our while to try to collaborate on individual sudokus, for example.)
For the final puzzle, NO BACKING OUT ENTIRELY because that presumably would disqualify you. So you are forced to stay in the game and keep playing the same setup. Gotta play the hand you are dealt.
Now the chess puzzle was always different because the trivia questions were always the same for everyone. There was no need to back out of the game and start over and get new questions. All you needed was the answers. I don't know if there were a variety of chess boards or just one board that everyone got, so don't know if there was a potential benefit there of trying to get a new problem if you were stumped. So it may be that there is a simpler way thru the chess puzzle but that the others will remain as hard (and as different) as they were all along.
edit: one of the googlefact posters specs that maybe the chess puzzle as described offers you choices for each of the three moves (instead of trivia questions) and you get to choose (and brute force) that way. If that's the case we are done unless there are different chess problems in play.

Actually, at least for the sudoku, paint splotches, and painting hanging, there was a button to reset the puzzle and a button to get a new puzzle.
I haven't done the final yet, I'm talking about the originals.

Just got this in the ol' email. It looks like they're aware of the discrepencies some people have posted about.
Quote:
Dear Da Vinci Code Quest on Google Finalist.
Today is the day! The Final Challenge begins shortly. We have heard that some of you had not received the Finalist notification that we sent out on Monday. This may be due to our mail being directed to your spam filter. Therefore we wanted to send another email in the hopes that it reaches those of you who may not have received our last communication. In order to participate in the final challenge visit the link below and start your quest for spectacular prizes.
LINK REMOVED
Keep in mind that this is a journey. You must complete the challenge by 1pm EDT on Sunday 5/21. The winner is not the first to complete the challenge but the one who finishes in the least amount of time will be crowned the champion. Be sure to leave enough time to finish, for once you begin you may not pause or stop the clock.
Good luck and enjoy the final challenge.
We have also heard word that some finalists have not received their cryptexes in the mail yet. The cryptexes were sent out Sat 5/13 and Monday 5/15. They were sent to the addresses provided on the contest registration form, therefore if anything was not provided correctly the cryptex may have been shipped to the wrong location. Be assured that if a cryptex comes back in the mail we will be contacting you to get the correct address.
The Da Vinci Code now in theaters

That's right - I had forgotten. I never used the "get me a new puzzle" option.
And BTW spec above confirmed, the guy at googlefact explains - there were three questions and the multiple choice answers were four possible chess moves. He and at least one other person both got 2-2-4.

So there definitely are questions on the chess challenge? Sweet! Looks like we all got a freebie for that puzzle.

I guess I need to quote the guy, since you don't believe me.
Quote:
4th was the chess game. No questions, you have to know how to play.
can't get much plainer than that.

For the chess: I know that in the previous versions, while the answers to each individual answer stayed the same, their positions would vary each time the puzzle reset. So the first time the answers might be "apple fish dog cat" and the next time it would be "cat apple fish dog" - so you actually had to pay attention rather than just clicking the numbers.
The fact that two people happened to get the same combo of 2-2-4 is just a quirk due to the fact that there really aren't *that* many combinations you can have.

stonefry, all that quote means is that the only way to properly pick the correct answers was to know how to play chess. However with the multiple choice option on the chess moves you don't have to know. If the problem is the same for everyone we have the answers. If there is more than one problem, the answer can be brute-forced.
Or you can always play it out on the board.

Mabey, but it worked for me too. Also it appears as if the sudoku may be the same for everyone, as this worked for me as well.

And so it turns out our bane will be - gah! - the scratchy pictures. Some will be lucky and get the solve quickly. Others will paw at it until it suddenly magically solves itself. Sigh.

Let me just note that for solving and posting info the googlefact crew have us beat hands down. We are slowing down. Kudos to them, and go vote for their mod's dog as cutest (see their blog)!

and the jigsaw puzzles images change? I love doing those! (there's a neopets game that does the same thing)

Finished in a little over 1 hour... I finished in approximately 1 hour. The sudoku puzzle decimated me. There were three (if I remember correctly) new icons, and I've never really enjoyed sudoku and haven't worked out the logic necessary to master it. The other four games took approximately 15 minutes. The chessboard was just a matter of progression, the works of art were not that much tougher than any other puzzle, the moving jigsaw was interesting but straightforward. The one I really suspect will hurt people will be the paint splotches. It took about 5 minutes, but I'm certain I got lucky.
I'm sure I took longer than is required for a prize (the idiot twins walked into my cubicle while I was working… how dare!), but it was interesting nonetheless.
I promise you, you do not get questions to help with the chess puzzle.
