As it asks for an e-mail address when you start, why not e-mail everyone asking them to stop the program if they have not done so already?

I did consider doing that - but as I only ever mentionned using that email address to notify success I felt I didn't really have the right to. Maybe I'm soft but I couldn't do it without asking first.

News for all - 1_3_0 went into testing tonight. At the moment it is on a different port - I'll see what port 80 looks like once testing is coming to a close.

OK then, send an e-mail to everyone asking them if it's OK! Razz

Seriously though, I'm sure it would be OK, but whatever you decide, you could tell people that they may get contacted in the case of future versions.

CLIENT UPDATE

Okay heres the latest news. you will be getting a few of these so please keep reading and checking the boards.

We have started to beta test a new version of the client that will prevent the problems encountered recently. We have several players running tests and are keeping tabs on the actual roll out, progress and any possible congestion issues. the new client records the time to next retry in the event of congestion and tells you how long it is going to wait - although having been running it on a network of 4 tonight this has only occured once personally when my isp went down.

Once tested we will roll out the client to a group of players and then provide a general release for all to use - hopefully by early next week. We will continue to monitor the roll out and i am looking at setting up a database to mail out the link for you to download the client (rather than a general download link) i will post more once we have finalised the details.

Many thanks to all for your patience.

Is there any chance you guys could make the number of allocated work units part of the config file? Say allow a range between 20-100 or something to that effect. I have an extra computer I could be using during the day, but it's firewalled, so the client won't run on it. Could be adding another 24 hours a day of computation if I could get enough units to run it that long.

right todays update (based on what I am aware of - UK Australia time differences and all that Smile - )

So far we seem to be making good progress. I have managed to get the network I had the client running on to run the new beta version of 1_3_0 - I was suffering from the same issues as Chimera245 in that my router just went into DNS mode. Having just fired up 14 pcs on one network and 3 at home they are all ticking over nicely and only encountered congestion on the original collection of wus - mainly because i had just fired off 14 pcs at the same time Smile

They are now ticking over nicely and should test the robustness of the server and give us something to measure things by. Wus are collected with no issues and the issues of congestion - even with a number of old versions still running would seem to be on the right path.

I will speak with Chimera later tonight (what is the time difference?) and we will probably update again tonight or tomorrow with further news.

I've also got about 15 beta clients running for Chimera245, and likewise some of them had a bit of congestion on startup, but after that - so far so good Smile

It's looking promising at the moment, hopefully the testing will be successful and we can get the full effort back up running - continuing kudos to Chimera, Guin and everyone else involved in organising and implementing this, good work guys Very Happy

Well I hope we can get it released soon because I hate that I have 90% of my CPU being completely wasted atm when it could be doing something useful.

Although make sure you lot sleep, LOL, you're all doing a great job though Smile

UPDATE

chimera245 has increased the number of workunits we download from 10 to 20 - this has had a significant effect in reducing the workload on the server (in request terms) by 40% significantly reducing congestion and improving general performance.

With only 50 active test cleints running we will have completed a totla of 12,000 work units in the last 24 hours. In real terms this means that with a network or 500 clients we could process 120,000 wus a day and it is not unrealistic to look at a completion time of 100 days when we get back on track (not including the already completed wus.

We have rolled the client out to a few more users today and I will be contacting 20 more tonight with the intention of us testing the robustness of the client and server over the weekend.

We will then stagger the client out over the next few days (Monday and Tuesday) to maintain the network infrastructure and ensure we do not bottle neck the server again.

Once again thank you for your patience. And id like to say a big ty to chimera245 for all the work he is doing on his side.

Testing

Continues to go well and we have tested different workloads such as 5 work Unit packets and 20. We are going to try higher value packets (say 30, 40 and 50) to test the effects opn the server and will hopefully be ready to rll out more clients in the week ahead.

We have had an average of 50 active clients testing and have processed 15,000 and 20,000 work units on day 1 and day 2 respectively. We need to test the robustness because this could quite easily convert into 150,000 or 200,000 wus a day which is a massive number and a massive workload for the server and network. The potential though would be a vast reduction in the time taken to complete the task if all goes well.

we will keep you posted

Good job guys, just please, remember to sleep Wink

You're doing a great job for the community and I'm sure once this is solved you are going to be some of the best loved players in the community.

You two certainly should get some sort of commendation from MC (Some sort of special leitmark perhaps?)

Maybe they'll stump up for a holiday for each of them, after all the work they've put in!

A fortnight in Perplexcity all expenses paid is the very least they deserve.
We can all chip in for the fare if NASA can supply the transport.

Seriously though, You guys Rock.
