errrg - has anyone tried "alphabet"

Yep and yep Evil.

Have tried ordering the letters of the names countries, the letters of the native names of countires, the captial cities of the countries and the main language by population, land area, dialling code. Will add a few others, but don't think it will make a difference.

I don't think this has been mentioned (yes I did a search) but maybe the connection is that all the countries have been/are a colonial empire (dunno about the asian countries) or have been/are the colonies of such an empire.

Sure there are some colonies (or ex colonies) missing like Canada, Australia, India but if you put all the colonies of empires up pretty much the entire map would be shown. You often talk about the Motherland as mother country of an empire, ie the UK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motherland

Don't know how Von's clue fits into that chain of though though. Confused

Has anyone tried looking for bodies of water in these countries (like the background of the card) that are named "tongue" in the native language? For example, the Tongue River in Wyoming and the Kyle of Tongue in Scotland...I haven't looked for others yet.

I had a similar idea a few days ago, ranking the countries by literacy rates, but havent had a chance to look into it yet. The only problem i can see with it is that literacy rates aren't an easy thing to measure and we'd need a reliable place to get the rankings. I might have a look around tomorrow, see if i can find anything useful

Foo. :/

Has that not bothered anyone else?
Why couldn't they just say "there wasn't enough room" if it isn't important? Confused

Of course Hawaii is important.
Maybe just not for this card.

Well, Hawaii is volcanic in origin. Islands of Micronesia around New Caledonia are also omitted and of volcanic origin. I have a problem with, say China or France, being volcanic, however.

Really, I don't think there is anything these places have in common. Canada and the US are quite homogeneous in any way you might want to look at them. I think these countries have been selected for some other reason, like initial letters, that can be organized somehow.

OK - last brilliant idea for today, though I've been at this too long today to try myself. What it we plotted the nations capitals, overlaid the PXC rail and/or subway lines, and looked for an odd city out? The 'mother tongue' could be the language of that left out city.

I added up all the 'country phone codes', and got excited when I accidently left out Angola, and hadn't added in Micronesia yet.

I ended up with 10110 Shocked

As a binary number, its 22 in decimal! Sadly, there is *no* country code of 22... Crying or Very sad

None of this matters anyway because I left off Angola in the first place, but this is the little 'trip' I took today! Razz

Could I have been close? Did I leave something out? Did I add wrong?
Someone, please check my list? Thanks! Wink

Code:
United States (1)
Russia (7)
Egypt (20)
Netherlands (31)
Spain (34)
Austria (43)
United Kingdom (44)
Brazil (55)
Japan (81)
South Korea (82)
Mauritania (222)
Liberia (231)
Chad Republic (235)
Equatorial Guinea (240)
Angola (244)
Somalia Republic (252)
Eritrea (291)
Ireland (353)
Albania (355)
Guatemala (502)
Ecuador (593)
New Caledonia (687)
Micronesia Fed States (691)
Laos (856)
Jordan (962)
Oman (968),
Israel (972),
Georgia (995)
Uzbekistan (998)
Total = 10110 (not including Angola and Micronesia)
10354 (including Angola, but still without Micronesia)
        11045 (all countries)

**edited**
To put them in code order

Hee hee - I did that today also but I added wrong and got 11011, or 27, which is the code for South Africa. Alas, my adding fu was weak.

Using Doublecrosses numbers from page 5 or 6 give 10354, 354 is the code for Iceland.

Now if you enter a search for the countries shown on the map with a selection of those not shown excluded, search engines refer you to this site!
I have gone though a dozen different search engines and followed up about 750 Wikipedia references and maps and many tangential references which have appeared including linguistics, geography, economics, women's rights, suffrage, birthrates, etc. with no solution. With all the other research being carried out by everybody involved in posting here I think we have put and are putting in a pretty impressive amount of effort, more than for most silvers.
So, I have concluded that a much more lateral approach is required and that's where I'm now going to concentrate.
I'll keep you posted but my first attempt will be to try to use Von's hint and 'go native'.
By the way, good luck to all the anagrammers, I'm beginning to regret my earlier dismissal of that particular route - it now looks promising.
Dawn is just breaking and the birds are singing, so I'm off to bed.
Be seeing you.

UGH! That was page 7. Embarassed
Oh well, I see we have the same numbers, but his list omits Micronesia.
I have a sneaky feeling this is the way to go, but something isn't quite right.

I don't know about other countries, but the phone company that's been around the longest here is AT&T, which is also affectionately known as "Ma (Mother) Bell"! Wink

Hi,

I've updated my database with a good few guesses, thanks Sophiecat.

... and all the lists of telephone numbers have left off French Guiana, which is 594 -> 10948 for the total (without Micronesia).

BTW I don't think Micronesia should be there, but include it if you wish.

Logically, though, international dialling codes should not be needed if you are 'going native'.

Thinking along the lines that the last 22 pages might all be overthinking the card I tried:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
29
30

Neither of which worked.

French Guiana is listed on this site. Is it on our map? (my eyes are *really* bad!)

"Ma Bell" is our 'native' long-distance phone company. And you can 'visit' *any* country, through her... Razz

**edit**
Adding to this theory regarding phone codes, maybe Canada isn't on our map because it's calling code is the same as the US (1). And, either another '1' would throw the total number we need to arrive at off, or the 'dots' won't connect correctly... ? Confused
