Another thing: Pirate 2 isn't the only one who doesn't fear being treated worse by pirate 2's split than by a 34/33/33/0/0 split. Pirates 4 and 5 also lack this fear, because they can't be treated worse. They're already getting nothing, so they've got nothing to lose by voting against that proposal.

So if you actually propose 34/33/33/0/0, not only are you accepting less than you could get away with, you're also going to wind up in Davy Jones' locker anyway.

Pirate 1 offer 2 of the other 1 dubloon and 2 zilch.
Pirate 2, offered 1 coin, for arguments sake, thinks 'Bugger this, if I vote 'Nay' we can kill the old git and the rest of the gang will know I won't be satisfied with just one coin. Arr.'
Pirate 3, offered nothing, thinks 'Well, if we're voting in order of age and the older, wiser pirate offered 1 coin thinks we can get a better deal by offing pirate 1, I'll vote 'Nay' also. Arr.'
Pirate 4 or 5, whoever else is offered nothing will naturally say 'Nay' too. Pirate 1 dies - let's redistribute the wealth, me hearties.

That, my PXC chums is mo funkin' fo logic!

The solve suggested is crud. I thank you for your time. Enjoy your weak lemon drinks...

What? As far as I can tell, you're not even talking about the right solution.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You state the #2 is offered the coin, and #3 isn't. That's not the solution as justdig pointed out; you got it backwards. If that was the offer, then we would be dead because as you pointed out #2 could do better and #3 has no incentive to vote yea.

Let's assume we made this offer and died for our stupidity. #2 cannot offer #3 anything because #3 makes the next distribution (it's the same situation as #1 and #2 in your postulate). #4 knows that if it is just two pirates, the offer will be 100-0 and because it will be 1-1 for the votes, #4 will win. So, #4 isn't going to vote for any proposal where he gets less than the full share at this point.

So, #2 has to buy #5's vote. Question is how much can he buy it for?

Let's assume that #2 didn't make the right decision, so now #3 is in control. #3 knows that if #4 is one of two, the 100-0 distribution comes out. So #3 can offer #5 1 doubloon to seal his vote because #5 isn't going to see a coin otherwise.

Okay, if #2 knows that #3 will offer #5 one doubloon, #2 can secure #5's vote with an offer of TWO doubloons. 98/0/0/2. Ayes: #2, #5, Nays: #3, #4. Tie goes to the winner.

So ... if we (as #1), know that #3 and #4 will get shut out if we are dead, we can offer them one doubloon each and guarantee their votes because they won't see anything otherwise. 98/0/1/1/0. Ayes: #1, #3, #4 Nays: #2, #5. Ayes have it. No one is dead (especially us).

Oh, btw, pirates prefer rum or grog.

Apparently using magnetic waves to scramble your brain makes you a more rational pirate.

Can anyone help?
- The subject describes itself

I am very confused by this card and have just got locked out.
I have tried out 45,40,15,0,0 but i now realise it was an unfair split and pirate 3 could have said no and got more coins after my gizzard was slit.
I then tried 35,30,30,5,0 but that didn't work.
Can anyone tell me where i am going wrong? Embarassed

A good hint:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Frankly, if you give ANYTHING to the second pirate, it's not going to be enough. He'll *always* say no, because then he'll definetely get a better share of it if he's the one distributing it.

A more giveaway hint:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you offer the third pirate something, he will say yes. This is because if he says no, and you are killed, then the second pirate will be distributing the gold, and he'll follow the logic in the hint above. Thus, any value above 0 will ensure that the third pirate says yes, because it's more than he'd get if the second pirate were to distribute it.

And another:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The fourth pirate.. If he says no, and you're killed, then the second pirate will give him something, as per the logic in the last hint.

That should get you going! Smile
