I love it when exciting things like this happen...I think I've got the answer from all the hints, but can't do anything about it until I get home...AARRGH!

where did the F come from? None of the countries start with F in their native languages.

What about the one you reminded me I was leaving off my list? Razz
Maybe the puzzle scribe transposed the 2 words?

'French Guiana' should be 'Guyane Française' (in French, their native language), but 'Française Guyane' would also work... ?

I haven't totally reverse-engineered it myself, yet. Confused

Another nudge for those still struggling:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
EvilGenius sometimes believes the wrong thing...

(but otherwise was very helpful to me yesterday with another card, so the Cow's not all evil)

That's frustrating. I'd deliberately only wasted 2 guesses last night, knowing there'd be a flood of hints in the morning, but it's still locked me out. I think they've transposed GF, but they could have called it France, as in DOMTOM. However they should have then called NC the same thing.

Federation of Micronesia? Wink

That turned out to be a red herring, didn't it? Embarassed

congratulations

Well done everyone thank God it's been solved.

Even though I am still lost on what the answer is and how it was arrived at this has been driving me mad for weeks so maybe I'll get some sleep and if someone wants to post the answer instead of clues for the thick ones amongst us it would be appreciated Very Happy

The answer, no clues, no hints is:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
6912

i.e. the supposed number of languages in the world.

i finally got the answer a while ago thanks to all the hints being dropped. So i tried to work backwards from the answer to the anagram that led to the answer and to construct the list of country names, but i couldnt quite get all the way there:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you take the native name of countires as follows:
Albania - Shqiperi, Angola - Angola, Austria - Osterrich, Brazil - Brasil, Chad - Tchad, Ecuador - Ecuador, Egypt - Misr, Equatorial Guinea - Guinea Ecuatorial, Eritrea - Ertra, Georgia - Sakartvelo, Ireland - Eire, Israel - Israil, Japan - Nippon, Jordan - Al'Urdun, Korea - Hanguk, Laos - Lao, Liberia - Liberia, Mauritania - Muritaniya, Netherlands - Nederland, New Caledonia - Nouvelle Caledonie, Oman - Uman, Russia - Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, Somalia - Somaliya, Spain - Espana, UK - United Kingdom, USA - United States of America, Uzbekistan - Ozbekistan Respublicksy, French Guyana - Guiana Francaise

This is what i think doublecross came up with yesterday, and gives SAOBTEMGESEINAHLLMNNURSEUUOG, which can be made into "sum the number OO single languages", or you can change the name for French Guyana to Francaise Guiana and get "sum the number of single LANGUAOES".

Have i made an error? Is the card slightly flawed? or is there another sentence that can be generated that implies the same answer?

Will we ever know????

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
i thought of putting in the number of all the languages a long time back, only difference was i put the number of languages that were in the countries on the card, but i guess its all the worlds languages...makes no sense to me.

So come on; who are you ?
Don't be afraid; we won't hurt you (much).
Who put the answer in the database as tried and failed ?
A shoal of trouts are heading your way.

As far as I know, someone typed it in to check if it was on the database, which accidentally ended up marking it as tried and failed. And before anyone asks, no it wasn't me! Instead, I spent ages Googling to see if it really was that number or not... Smile

4 hours and I get on the solved list. Yay! (through gritted teeth)

Further conjecturing about the answer:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

So which anagram are we saying is THE one that points to the solution? Because doublecross' ONE TONGUE, NUMBERLESS LANGUAGES was the one that got me to the answer. I guess SUM THE NUMBER OF SINGLE LANGUAGES is too specific to be a coincidence, though.

Here's the piece of trivia that sent us barking up the wrong tree for the better part of a fortnight:

If you take the internet top level domains for all the countries and run a check on the 58/60 letters, you'll find they almost exactly match the frequency you'd expect from written English. Too many Gs, but I think we all worked out the word 'language' was in there somewhere. The Z from Uzbekistan is a problem, until you realise that all sorts of phrases about 'Berlitz foreign language users' are possible. And if you look at the international Berlitz website you'll see the map on the front page is very similar to the card, but with the addition of little flags and the countries' TLDs. God, we were so convinced...

I've been working back too. I can get sum the number of single languages if uzbek = u, great britain = g, and french guyana/france = f. Otherwise same as beglee. I can't do one tongue numberless languages because of y/israel. Nice if you got the right answer for the wrong reason. Somehow more satisfying.
