PXC video comp - Spielberg never has these problems Well, it's uploading day for the video competition. I've managed to fit a noir detective story into my 90 seconds. Or I will have, once I've:
1. Re-shot the scene at the station to actually include the train going past cos I missed it last night.
2. Re-dubbed the audio-track because my accent wanders a little and I put more rain on there than I actually got when filming.
3. Finally got The Cube rendered.
Yeah, considering this is my first ever film of anything, I think maybe the dozen or so shots including computer models was a little ambitious
#3 is interesting since before this week I'd never done any CGI. Since getting moving footage of The Cube is tricky I casually figured "Oh, I'll just fake it with computers - how hard can it be?" Yeah, I walked into that one, huh?
Anyway, I spent 10 hours learning Blender from scratch up to the point where I could do tricky things like animation, glowing surfaces, glass and smoke, then set that bad boy rendering at about midnight last night. Best guess for the length of time to render 20 seconds of film at decent resolution and quality? Ooooh, I'd say a little over 15 hours. It should be ready by the time I get home from work tonight.....
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has had any other problems?
Oh, and if anyone else needs some footage of The Cube (sat glowing on it's plinth like on the back of recent cards, with a tracking camera and some nice glowing smoke round the base - any camera shot and colour/texture combination is possible) then PM me - will render for card trades
EDIT: Boom! It's now up at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3rPGEAQswU
And just for fun, here's me following MC's suggestion to have my own private world premiere, tuxedo and all
Description
Mmmm, such a high-quality and flattering photo....

I'm still awaiting those upload instructions. I'm assuming that they will be posted on pxc.com.
I had numerous problems, but I'm not game to mention all of them on a public forum. I'll just say that computer animation can be a lot trickier than it looks.
I think that the compression on youtube is a bit of a shame since I bet that a lot of the movies would look better in a higher resolution. I guess that is the price to pay for streaming video that more people will be bothered to look at.

Tbh I'm disapointed of the time they picked, just coming up to exams for people in either school, college or uni makes it difficult to find the time to make a short film. I would have loved to have had a go at something but due to exams and coursework, didn't have the time.

Yeah got my video done this morning. I had big plans but due to uni only could do so much. Its not especially viral, more of an advert..
Most of mine was done in After Effects and Premiere. I was going to do some 3d stuff since I've been learning Maya and ZBrush for about two years now but ran out of time. I look forward to seeing yours though Seej.... well done for getting a grasp of a 3d package in such a short time...

Hmmm............ if everyone else has been spending ages doing all sorts of clever whizzy techy things, my effort is going to be akin to the crayon scribblings of a small monkey when displayed next to a Van Gogh. Oh dear.

That was my idea to have a monkey scribble things with a crayon!
Seriously though, mine is going to look rubbish too, don't worry.

You have crayons??? Dangit, now I'm totally screwed!
*walks away in shame*
I've never animated anything before and know I'm doing it all wrong. To give you a hint, I have over 1000 .bmp files mostly created in mspaint. Once again, yeah I'm an idiot. Anybody know of a program that will put them all together in an animation?

Hooray, I'm not the only person to have crafted(!) bits of their film in Paint
I used the Windows Movie Maker that they mentioned on the competition page. Tried a few other things, but couldn't understand them at all.

I have a feeling some of these film submissions are going to be pretty interesting . But having just checked out the contest page now and seeing the prizes they're offering, I kind of wish I had heard about it earlier and came up with something. My entry would have probably been more pitiful looking and embarrassing than anything seen here though, so perhaps it's for the best I didn't try to enter.

Hey, it's not too late to cobble something together!

I know. It seems like most of the software is designed for people who know what they are doing. They have all these great features that probably make life much more pleasant when animating, but just get in the way for a hack like me. I think we should start a "worst video" contest. I honestly don't know what I'm more exicted to see - the really good ones or the "Ukrainian animation using potatoes and straw" ones.

Sounds cool - can't wait to see it.

Yes. Next time, the first item on the props list *will* be a rolled-up newspaper.

I fear mine is teetering on the edge of the latter category. It's the best I could manage, hindered only by a lack of imagination and total absence of knowledge. I think it's a fair way from rivalling the works of Ed Wood, but it ain't no Oscar winner either.

Oh gawd; me and my big mouth. Just because I've put all this work in doesn't mean it's gonna be any good
Anyway, here's a cheeky sneak preview of my 3D work, albeit truncated, in low res with antialiasing and some other stuff turned off:
Linky
As for the full size, hi-rez, bells and whistles animation, my initial estimates for rendering time seem to have been rather too hopeful - it looks more like it could take until around 8PM to get to frame 500....
EDIT: Upload instructions are now on the PXC video comp page .
