It's a scam, for sure.
You can have a lot of fun stringing them along. I've only done it once and didn't take it as far as I should, but there are people who string these guys along for months, sometimes creating a seriously funny chain of emails along the way.

http://www.419eater.com/html/links.htm
The pic of the guy on that page was due to the scambaiter having the scammer get a picture of himself with the sign, so he'd know who he was when the met. A meeting, the scambaiter never had any intention of making. Sometimes, they have them hold a sign with the scambaiters "name" on it like, "Iama Wayne Kerr"

One guy even had garbage drop shipped to the scammer at their own expense(Packed in a broken washing machine).

If you wanted to develop this, into a fullblown scambaiting campaign, We could all provide input.

EDIT:
Don't even consider actually meeting with these people, though. There have been a few kidnappings, robberies and even deaths of people taken in by the scammers.

I've just been hit with what I do believe is an ARG trailhead. I got the following message:

electrohat4000: i say, old bean, have you seen my hat?
electrohat4000: Words are an old and clumsy substitute... ultimately necessary, but they rarely capture the essence of things.
kronecodow: Hello?
kronecodow: Who are you?
kronecodow: hello???

In the buddy info of this guy, I saw:

mess with the best, die like the rest

http://www.ricedoutyugo.com/hat/

(530) 678-4931

The website is kind of retarded, but it could be an ARG. I'm a little too scared to call the number, but usually ARGs begin with a phone number that leads you on to more clues. Anyway, the guy definitely found me from back in the days when I played qu13e.

I did just call the number, but couldn't understand what was being said. EDIT: Second time around: it's just a computerized voice saying "I ay old bean, have you seen my hat?"

What do you think?

a quick google of alux4 show it showing up in a lot of list messages. I wonder if it is part of a security program to mask the senders true address?

I'm seeing alux4.att.com, alux4.cnet.att.com, alux4.micro.lucent.com ...

But it may be an AT&T and spinoff companies server. Maybe SBC (who bought AT&T) is now using it as a spamhause?

I got something like this, too. Except from a different screen name. I did a little research. Turns out this is likely just a little prank that's been going around the livejournal community lately. Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thegreathatsby.

Upon further investigation of the website, perusing their forums, I was checking out their member profiles. One of them is the Mr. The Plague that posts a lot of the random images on the main page. The AIM screen name is that member profile is WarpKoreBreach.

So I IMed him/her/it.

The following is the conversation. Mostly nonsense:

Quote:

Fosforix: so is this the trailhead to an ARG
Fosforix: or is this just for fun
Auto response from WarpKoreBreach: Hacked by Chinese
Fosforix: kudos to you either way
Fosforix: although, your away message pretty much just gave me a seizure
WarpKoreBreach: huh
Fosforix: this hat thing
Fosforix: these aim bots that are collecting names from livejournal and connecting two random screen names it gets
Fosforix: with a link to http://www.ricedoutyugo.com/ in their profile
Fosforix: a forum exists on that webpage, the only active user was mr. the plague
Fosforix: the screen name listed in its profile was this
WarpKoreBreach: okay
Fosforix: this thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thegreathatsby
WarpKoreBreach: Hm.
WarpKoreBreach: have you ever stayed up till 11 AM to watch the sun set?

Auto response from Fosforix:
You bring me out, show me light,
I'm sorry if I hide, I'm too afraid to look inside.
You carry truth, you make me smile.
If it were you and me tonight,
I would tame the stars and save the brightest one for you,
For you...

WarpKoreBreach: It's a truly unsettling experience, having been transplanted from the heart of vicscosity itself, to a land of milk and.. I hesitate to say honey, where the term "grit" would be more apropos.

Auto response from Fosforix:
You bring me out, show me light,
I'm sorry if I hide, I'm too afraid to look inside.
You carry truth, you make me smile.
If it were you and me tonight,
I would tame the stars and save the brightest one for you,
For you...

Fosforix: right
WarpKoreBreach: It's true.
Fosforix: i believe you
Fosforix: ive just never heard of a sun setting at 11 am
WarpKoreBreach: Odd.
Fosforix: indeed
WarpKoreBreach: No, I mean it is odd that you have never heard of sunsets at 11AM.
WarpKoreBreach: Have you transcended the fabric of hat-time itself?
Fosforix: the cap for my graduation gown is made of cheap pseudo-fabric if thats what you mean
WarpKoreBreach: You are thinking in mundane terms. I congratulate you. This effort will needless be well spent
Fosforix: pardon me
WarpKoreBreach: Are you seeking enlightenment, or simply a cover for your head?
Fosforix: both
WarpKoreBreach: Seeking one will surely lead to the destruction of both.
WarpKoreBreach: Or, not.
WarpKoreBreach: I was never good at this schroedinger crap
Fosforix: that makes two of us
WarpKoreBreach: No, that makes -1 of us.
Fosforix: then i am negative matter?
WarpKoreBreach: Rumour has it that all things are from the seed. The feed is cubic time madness, and the seed is singular. There can only be one living thing within each 4-day corner of the time cube.
WarpKoreBreach: If you'll excuse me temporarily, I must switch my consciousness out for the replacement model.
Fosforix: roger that
WarpKoreBreach: I'm not roger, victor.
Fosforix: my apologies
WarpKoreBreach: invert the vector, roger?
WarpKoreBreach: Can you contain your ASCII? Or must you discharge it?
Fosforix: error 404, vector not found
Fosforix: well i type in letters
Fosforix: so i must contain my ASCII
Fosforix: otherwise itd be hard
WarpKoreBreach: This provides no useful information.
WarpKoreBreach: Let go of your boundaries, man.
Fosforix: im sorry, im useless apparently
WarpKoreBreach: Do not try to appear useless. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth. The useless appearance will be added by a high-end SGI workstation in post-processing.

Erm, i dont think i should be getting ARG as I havent joined any, but on the offchance this is something.

I don't normally get something like this with links that dont point to some crap, but this points to a real Yahoo group. And it has White words, possibly a hidden message. No idea Smile

Is there anyone that could possibly hit me up on msn sometime to explain this whole ARG thing and how I can get more involved?

Ok here is the email from (Moses Weaver [Streaming_quotes_bureau@gmail.com]), red highlighted words are the ones hidden, placed at the end and underneath every paragraph.

The Rotating Tool is a device that attaches to the end of a coiled tube to assist with "latching a fish," or removing production kits or undesired obstructions from the well by introducing rotation under mechanical pressure. The design and action of the tool is similar to a "Yankee screwdriver." If, for example, during normal operations, a piece of coiled tube is broken off and remains lodged in the wellbore, it can be difficult to get the new coiled tubing line past the obstruction. By introducing rotation to the "overshot," or latching mechanism at the end of the tool, obstructions can be cleared without the need to manually work the tool through the well head. neurosensory

I got an email from Coil Tubing this morning as well, but from a Tim Weatherspoon, and my hidden words are different. But its to a ficticious name at my work address which gets a lot of junk mail, and certainly isn't from anyone who knows anything about us.

Their website mentions Small Caps, and I wonder if its a plea for investment, - if its not just a total scam.

The hidden words are probably just to foil spam filter which compare e-mails for same-ness in the message.

True, just i normally see those words at the end of the message, and they arent hidden. I dont see how changing their colour would make any difference to an email parser.

Anyway, probably is junk Smile

Ahem, I'm afraid this is quickly going to cause me a great deal of embarrassment, but I'm putting this here anyway because... it's just so frigging weird.

Yesterday someone left a message on my cell's voicemail. The number it came from is a valid UK number (I'm in California), and, um... the guy at that number knows nothing about me or my cell phone, so I'm not going to include it here, but it's kinda weird-looking - strings of 4s, 6s, and 7s. Looks rather spoofed, which only adds to the weirdness, heh.

I figure it's either a prank (in which case spoofing would make sense) or an accident (like, someone sat on their phone and it randomly dialed my number while some movie or something was running in the background), but... er... well, it's still just too weird. And kinda creepy. But mostly wierd Very Happy

As a... reflective, I guess... aside: you know, three years ago I wouldn't have even given it a second thought before erasing it. Three years of ARGing = anything slightly out of the ordinary might be a KLOO (hah! to what?!) Gah! Damn you, krystynsleepdeprivation! Mr. Green

I got this email, that makes it look like it was sent from myself to my own email address, which I know isn't hard, but still, that's what made it caught my eye. And of course my spam filter didn't catch it, which is another reason why I'm curious to what this email is, if it's not spam.

The subject is simply - 57657

and the body of the email is - 969

It's not enough numbers to be a phone number, so that is out. And preliminary googling of mkaneki.com and marunouchi.tokyo.ocn.ne.jp shows no possibility [from what I can tell] of trailhead website, and the only hit off of marunouchi is someone on a forum asking about taking their ip off of a statcounter.

It's spam. Several people in #uf got them, including someone at their work email address (which even they don't know) and someone else's daughter. So unless the PMs are now stalking people, I'm pretty sure we can say it's just a mass phishing exercise for new email addresses.
