Avian Flu prevention?

From ODE mag, referencing the mag ITALY:

Researchers at the University of Milan have discovered that white wine and white grape juice contain some of the same substances as Tamiflu, which many scientists consider the most effective defense against all types of flu, including avian flu. White wine contains shikimic acid and quercetin, the main ingredients in the Chinese star anise plant used to make Tamiflu. So drinking a glass a day could have preventative effects. That's good news according to the magazine ITALY.

That would mean my gran was always right. Risotto (rice cooked in white wine) is best dish when you have a 'cold'.

Wiki's take on those subjects:

Quercetin
Quote:

Together with rhamnose, it forms a glycoside quercitrin. {note: glycosides have medicinal effects as an anti inflamitory, and also are part of Saponins (think soap) which are found in liquorice, which have an antimicrobial effect - Steff}
...
Foods rich in quercetin include apples, black & green tea, onions (higher concentrations of quercetin occur in the outermost rings[1]), raspberries, red wine, red grapes, citrus fruits, broccoli & other leafy green vegetables, and cherries. A study[2] by the University of Queensland, Australia, has also indicated the presence of quercetin in varieties of honey, including honey derived from eucalyptus and tea tree flowers.[3]

Shikimic acid

It's a precursor of Indole and the anti-inflamitory Indomethacin.

Keep in mind that the lethal infections to date have mostly been among people with close associations to birds. Poultry workers, families with flocks or pets.

The reason there is such interest in it, even though there have only been 115 deaths (out of a total of 208 confirmed cases) in 3 years (WHO statistics), is because Influenza tends to mutate into new strains easily, and the bird form has been spreading rapidly through avian populations through migratory paths of wild birds which then cause the illness in domestic stocks.

To keep from getting it the same precautions for any flu season apply:
Wash your hands.
Did I remember to say, Wash your hands.

Remember what you r mother told you:
Don't pick up dead things (especially birds).
If you do, don't forget to wash your hands...
