[EMAIL] From Dale June 6

Ok.. well I got a response from Dale to an email I sent (makes me thignk even more that something happened to my email to Sam.. spammed maybe). Anyway, not much valuable intel.. I tried to draw out some comments about the weird occurances with his dreams.. but...

anyway....

Here's what I wrote:

Mr. Sprague,

Greetings. My name is Andrew Gastaldo and I'm one of the lucky ones who got to pre-order your comic book, Chasing the Wish. I must admit I've never been a HUGE comic book fan. I currently work, temporarily I hope, in a bookstore and still read Green Lantern when it comes out, but that's about it. Your comic, however, I couldn't resist. Its mainly for what you've written about it. I'm a huge fan of weird happenings and paranormal type stuff... I do alot of reading and detective work on stuff like that in my spare time... so the stuff you said about your dreams, your daughter remembering the puzzle, and the town.. well, it just caught my interest. Part of me wants to think your just making it up as a crazy publicity stunt... but I can't bring myself to believe that. I'm not sure why, but my gut just believes you.

Anyway, its a wonderful comic. The story is nifty and I really like the art style. Great job and congratulations on getting it published. That's a rarity these days... many people have great ideas but so few get them published.

Oh, and I've been exploring Aglaura's website and other sites from the town since I got your comic. I'd just like to say that I totally support you and your librarian, Ms. Wyatt, in your desire to maintain the old library. I can't say that I think this whole Marzent "futuristic digital" library is the right thing. It just seems wrong for so many reasons. Good for you for standing up for the library, though I'm sure it must be difficult for you with your ex wife on the other side of the fence.

Well, I'm gonna let you get back to more important things... I'm looking forward to issue #2!

-Andrew

and here's what Dale said back

Dale wrote:
Andrew,

Thank you very much for the kind words of praise about Chasing The Wish. I can't
tell you how rewarding it is to read letters such as yours telling me how much
you've enjoyed the book. It makes all the hard work and struggles along the way
worth it. As you mentioned, getting it actually created and published wasn't
easy, for too many reasons to name.

Thank you also for your support over the Aglaura Public Library issue. Sarah and
the Library need all the help we can give her, since the work Marzent has
already done around here is so popular with the Aglaura citizens. Even so, I
have to believe that we'll win in the end, especially with so many new people
joining in the fight. I'll try and keep you updated with any news about the
debate, or ways that you can help us defeat Marzent's redevelopment proposal.

Dale

Responce from an email I sent June 1.

Sylvia,

Thanks for writing me and offering your support. I'm not really used to
sharing personal information about myself and my family with strangers,
but I guess I basically asked for it when I made us all characters in my comic book.
It still feels very weird though, to think that there are so many people out
there now intimately familiar with the details of my life.

Thanks for your "wish" for my happiness. I hope yours turns out better
than mine originally did.

LOL he answered the mail I sent on May 4th
It was just a test mail, asking for the Synthasia relaunching. Here is the answer:

Hi,

I know this reply is incredibly late, and that you probably already know that my main website, Synthasia.com, has been up and running again for a while now, but I'm just trying to be thorough in answering the emails I've missed while I've been so busy lately. So the answer is yes, Synthasia has been re-launched, a couple of weeks ago.

I hope you like the site's new look, and be sure to check out the website for my comic book Chasing The wish at:

eek, well, now i am stuck. I wrote to Dale using my "game name" long before i started the petition just trying to get a response back... and when i didn't get a response i used my real name to start the petition. sure enough, my game name got a response back today. Basically, i'll use it as an emergency name for if we need "legend" or history info or whatnot.

You don't know me, but I am hoping you will... I dream. A lot. My dreams tell me things, lead me places... I'm a writer, so i just always felt
it was my muse sending me towards real inspiration and research.

Intending on writing a new horror novel, my muse recently led me to stumble upon some legends recently, faint ghost tales about a town in NJ - Aglaura. No one seems to have a clear picture of their past in this town - massive amnesia? I read something in a magazine {Weird NJ}, but no one is ever very descriptive. I thought perhaps an interview of the residents would help.

Your comic, Chasing the Wish, also takes place in Aglaura NJ, am I correct? A comic about your dreams about the "missing" time period? I am more intrigued every day hearing about the many legends in NJ, and
Aglaura itself seems to have. I would LOVE to discuss this further with you, maybe you are my new muse.

His reply:

I'm really sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your email, but May was not a good month for me as far as getting everything done that I wanted to, what with releasing and trying to promote my first comic book, Chasing The Wish, as well as being busy with my "real" job, my business Synthasia Design.

Anyway, I'm finally beginning to catch up on things and was going through my email when I noticed that I had never returned your correspondence. It's nice actually to hear from a fellow writer, especially one whose work also seems to be so attuned to their dreams, like mine is. I also believe that dreams are messages from our inner truths and beliefs, inspiring and motivating us much like a muse would. I've always thought it was tragic that so many people just ignore their dreams, treating them as if they were useless flights of fantasy with absolutely no relevance to their ordinary, wakeful existence. What a loss of beauty and potential truth for the world.

Yes, I do live in Aglaura, NJ, which was formerly known as Ongs Hat, and which has an extremely colorful and interesting history. Legends about the naming of the place and unusual things that have happened here since are all over the Internet but, like everything else you can find there, they need to be taken with a grain of salt, if you know what I mean. Chasing The Wish uses some of thos eold stories and legends, with its real life back drop of Aglaura providing the perfect setting for my fictional story line.

So I hope you enjoy Chasing The Wish Book One and the issues to follow. Please feel free to write to me and ask me any questions you might have about the local legends and mysteries I address in the book, and I'll see what I can do to provide a little more information about them.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Shel's E-mails

Shel sent this to dale:
Quote:

You don't know me. I'm a big fan, however. Of the novel, that is. I've heard that it's doing very well and that it's a new favorite of many. I like to see the things I'm interested in flourish and grow, even if I have no personal stake in their success.

My favorite restaurants, my favorite coffee shops, etc. I like to get to know the people that I do business with (even if only once!) on a more personal level wherever possible. Business owners are people too... and as a businessman, you know that there's no such thing as bad networking.

In any event... I'm Shel. Just an average fan with a comic book. As I've been reading this stuff---- well, let me be honest. It's some pretty fucked up shit. I picked up the comic after reading your blog. Don't ask me how I found it because I'd never be able to tell you.

However, even though it is not a lick of my business, it sounds like you've been pouring your emotion into this book. But man-- those books don't give any responses. They're like a mirror into which you can look and see yourself, but they only give yourself back.

You need to talk to someone. From reading your blogs, the nightmares are there and the sleeplessness. Again-- none of my damn business. But you need it. Something is bothering you. Find someone that you trust and talk to them. Beat them into listening to you if you have to, but find someone objective and honest to give you feedback.

I'm just a person that gets concerned when I see another person in pain... and you, Dale, seem like you're in pain.

Anyway, I'm probably bothering you and you likely have a million things to do. If there's ever anything that I can do to help your business, someone to bounce ideas off of-- or even an objective (and NON JUDGMENTAL) person to talk to... I'm comfortable with that.

A Reader,
Shel Smythe

Shel,

I just finished reading your nice email and wanted to thank you very much for being such a big fan of Chasing The Wish. It's incredibly rewarding to read letters like yours, telling me how much you've enjoyed the book, and it really makes all the hard work and struggles along the way worth it.

You are right that I've poured my heart and soul into Chasing The Wish, as evidenced by the fact that I made myself the main character. Unfortunately, when you tap into emotions that raw and strong, you've got to be prepared for both the good and the bad to come out. I keep telling myself it's OK to be so exposed and vulnerable, since the "Dale" in the comic book is fictional and isn't really the same person as me at all. But it's a hard sell sometimes, especially when I'm still so immersed in the whole story, while writing Book Two of the series.

Thanks again for the great comments about my comic.

So Shel replied back:
Quote:

Just wanted to drop you a line at the RIGHT e-mail address this time and thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to write to your fans.

If I'm getting too much into your business, you just let me know-- I'm a curious and empathetic individual by nature, and your words did seem to jump and stick to me-- you said that you were tapping into emotions that were "that raw and strong". I assume from the novel that these emotions are born of your dreams that inspired the work?

Again, if it's none of my business, you can feel free to tell me so. Just like your business is to pursue clients to purchase books and also for synthasia.com for web design--- mine is to pursue the thoughts and feelings of the individuals that I come into contact with-- so please pardon me if I am too forward.

For some reason, your writing and work has inspired me to get to know "Dale Sprague" a little better than what I have perceived through his (your) writing... and honest and direct questions are just about what I know how to do. Smile

I hope that this e-mail finds you well and in good health.

Shel Smythe

I had sent a "feeler" e-mail to Dale saying a general "Hi" to see if I could get a conversation started...

I had sent this to Dale on May 4th.

Quote:

Hi Dale!
You probably don't remember me! I saw your site a few years ago and wrote you a fwe times.

I was cleaning out my contacts and realized I hadn't heard from you in a while. I see the new site design, the dragons look just smashing. Chinese aren't they? Are they for protection or for luck?

Well, nice talking to you again!

Hi Steffeny,

Yes, most people would probably be too embarassed to even answer an email after so long, but I think I lost much of my capacity for shame when I started down the path to turn my life into a comic book story.

But I'm sorry, you are right that I don't remember you. I'm glad you like the Synthasia re-design anyway though. Yes, the dragons are Chinese. I have always felt somewhat of a fondness and affinity for dragons and this pair in particular appealed to me because I thought they sort of formed the letters "SD" for Synthasia Design when I saw them.

Stay in touch, will you? I may not be at this same email address a few years from now, next time.
