[Trail] Detritus

New in house trail fresh out of the oven.

The 35+1 puzzles contained within were originally made for the ARG 'Another Contest Worth Entering' which never made it to completion. Rogi and I said to some of the players that we'd reorganise these into a trail and it only took us, well.. ages. That being said, if you were a player from ACWE some of the puzzles may look familiar to you, but it'd be nice to leave other people to have a go at those ones first (and I know others could look in the archives for the solves, but that'd just be no fun Wink )

Just to let you know there is no difficulty order in the puzzles, each is just a plain puzzle, not made specifically harder than any of the others. Everything else you need to know should be on the front page of the trail. Thanks go out to Skenmy for the help with the tricksy webdesign and to Ehsan for hosting at soogees.

Have fun and enjoy!

Oh, and as always, discussion in #soogees.

The picture and quote in puzzle 1- detritus are
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Frederick Sanger, a nobel laureate.

Obviously it's not asking for the next number in the sequence as
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
13211311121110
isn't the answer.

A hint...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The number of numbers is the next number.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Well http://www.mathsoft.com/mathsoft_resources/mathsoft_constants/Functional_Iteration/2135.aspx discusses the number sequence in reference to Conway's Constant and, down at the bottom of the page, the Cosmological Theorem. Unfortunately neither of those alone, nor any combination of them and Frederick Sanger that I've tried have yet to work...

Anyone gotten anywhere with this yet?

My hint doesn't help?!? Wink

I guess I could spoiler the solution...but isn't it more fun to figure it out on your own...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The first number is 0. So there is one 0 or 10 which is the next number. Well now there's one 1 and one 0 or 1110 which is the next number. Now what do we have? Well, it's three 1's and one 0 or 3110. Keep going to get the number they want.

Good luck on #2...I haven't taken a good look at it yet, but nothing leaps out at me at first glance.

Edited spoiler to fix my dumb mistake...

@pucks; I posted (in a spoiler tag) the next number in the sequence, but it's not accepting it. A further hint as to why this isn't the right answer would be appreciated.

Sure... Smile

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The last number given to us is 31131210. So, starting at the left we have a 3. How many total 3's are there? Two. Ok so remember 23. The next number we come to is 1. How many 1's are there? Four. Ok so know we have 2341. Now keep moving to the right until you find a new number. There's a 2. Only one...so 234112. Finally the 0 at the end to give us 23411210. You did the same thing I did at first but that strategy falls apart between the 5th and 6th numbers. I hope this makes sense.

Basically, it's
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
this sequence, but starting at zero instead of one.

The Sanger background was just to reinforce the "sequence" theme.
