Congrats, Cort.

(Aside: People get married on Sundays in the U.S.? The majority of the weddings we have here in Canada are on Saturdays...)

We're weird.

Originally, we were looking at today for our wedding (Saturday), but things went downhill. We were going to have at Glen Echo Park (turn of the century amusement park turned museum) but when their caterer heard wedding, it doubled the quote we already had. Seriously, I'd had a phone conversation where they'd said $50-75/head (gulp), and then once the contract for the venue was done it started at $110/head (passes out). We had words with them. (I seriously wonder how much they spent on SEO after we were done with them, it must have cost a LOT.) We got our money back from Glen Echo, with an apology, and then booked our church for the wedding on the 10th of June.

A few days later someone set a fire in the church trash cans, causing significant damage to the choir room and the church offices. Had the fire department been five minutes later, there wouldn't have been a church to save. The police are still investigating the arson charges.

So, now we had a church, albeit once that we'd seen damaged. Reception time. We called our favorite restaurant, Ray's The Steaks and said, "Hey, can we rent the place?" and they said "Nope, sorry, it'd be too much trouble/money. But, we do have a new location opening in March, and it'll have banquet space for 60. Interested?"

Hell yes.

Problem became that March became April. Late April comes and I call their owner "Hey, remember when you said March? And we were interested in your banquet space?" "Yeah. So, about that. Problems. Not open yet. Not sure when we'll open." "Poo."

So we called our backups and everyone was booked. Double Poo.

We started playing the "What If" game. "What if we went to Vegas and got married by Elvis?" The next day the story came out that the guy who'd bought Graceland and all the rights to Elvis' image was threatening to sue impersonators. Um, we just cursed a whole profession, just by speaking it aloud?!

Well, crap. That's not good. So, we said, "what if we got married on Sunday?" Hmm. That could work. No one would have to change tickets or anything. So we called the church and our pastor said, "You know, Gretchen and Dan (music director and her husband) did it two years ago, that was a really great time. However, I've got a flight at 4pm, so we're going to need to do it in the middle of church. Okay by you?"

"Whatever works for the church and the congregation!"

Gretchen got us our trumpets. And the full 40 voice church choir. And did I mention it's church music sunday anyhow?

We're ecstatic, even though yes, it is a bit odd to be married on a Sunday, we are fairly convinced that's how it was meant to be from the get-go.

Fate has a funny way of kicking you in the shins sometimes. Thanks for the tale. Smile

Very Happy Very Happy

Congratulations you two! (on the marriage, not on the Elvis-impersonater-profession-cursing. Wait, is Elvis impersonator an actual profession? Shocked )

Very Happy
