Here's a nice little site which takes some of the donkey work out of frequency ananlysis/substitution codes:

The basic rule is, in any particular language, certain letters will be used more often than others. If your piece of encrypted text is large enough, you would expect the number of times a letter is used to match that in an 'ideal' piece of text. Match the substituted letter to it's nearest equivalent and you've decoded it. Doesn't always work, thereby requiring a bit of intelligence such as jojojojo mentioned.

And obviously the longer the piece of text the better chance of this working. This is because of statisitcs.

Thank you all - "The Code Book" has duly been Amazoned (they didn't have Codes and Ciphers for Kids!), and is on its way, and I am going away to use Braxis' web page to decode these myself! PPC sure has a way of taking you to those places that other games don't reach ....

Yes, these texts are a little short.

E.G the text on the gamma page reads like this when decoded properly:

why cryptology

cryptology is simply put the lifeblood of perplex city the academy
department of cryptology has its roots deeply entwined with civic and
economic advancement from banking to communications our modern lifestyle relies heavily on the peace of mind that cryptologic research gives to every single citizen here at the academy we don t just study cryptology we define it whatever program you participate in you will be sure to encounter the finest minds in the discipline and you will be given the tools to conduct research that was barely at the edge of imagination a mere ten years ago no other cryptological department in the world offers such a breathtaking opportunity

Whereas just substituting the most likely letter would lead you to believe that the message is:

So, to kick off the idle speculation, who picked up the phone?

Yep, I can copy and paste too. I used this to decrypt. Apologies to the purists who I've obviously offended by doing so, but I figured I'd get it up so the people who weren't going to decrypt it could start on the next bit of the puzzle. (You'll notice that I did spoilerize it.)

The only thing that strikes me so far is this:

Leckworthy's analysis of the Earth-Perplex City data link

He's in the faculty of Information Theory. If he's been working on the data link he might have enough access to set up the commucations between V and the agents 1-8.

This is in reference to Kurt's earlier post about how "there seems to be a higher amount of chatter going on between Earth and Perplex City, and it can't be accounted for by normal Academy traffic":

I like the quote:

Not suspicious at all. *shifty eyes*. Now if they met in the catacombs then thats something else Smile

Could there be a page number code to the Epsilion section? Ive tried 4-10, E, V and 3P with no luck, but it might be worth a try Wink

I've being using the crypto club website and finding some strange things.

One major question I have is what is a whisk array and what the yotz does it do. There has to be a reason why it's not always reliable.
