[EMAIL] Sarah June 16 re:Literary references

I wrote to Sarah about the literary references in 'Variety is the spice of dead librarians'

Plans and Dreams Thu, Jun 15, 2006 at 10:36 PM
Dear Sarah,

I'm happy to hear of the brewing plan to save the library, and can
hardly wait to hear the details. I've added my name to the petition,
and have asked some like minded friends, Laura Benningfield and Tom
Fitzpatrick, to do so as well.

A number of friends of mine have been looking over your 'Variety is
the spice of dead librarians' entry; and while, as far as I know, none
of us are experts at dream interpretations, we have noticed some
literary references in the description of your last dream.

They include:
'Jamaica Inn '
'Jane Eyre '
'The Haunting of Hill House'
'Nineteen Eighty-Four'
'The Turn of the Screw'

Maybe you'd recognize other titles, if you look at it in that light.

So, perhaps that dream is a reflection of your great concern to save
the library....great literature that once immersed you....floating
through your subconscious...and turning up in your dreams.

If you would like to explore this further, perhaps we could all meet
in AIM or some other instant messaging place. If you have an IM nick,
and you don't mind me sharing it with the better minds than mine that
first recognized these references; I'll pass it on to them.
My AIM name is xxxx. I'm not very techo chic, but I'll try to be on
there more often if I know you'll be looking for me.

Please don't use sentences like "I don't mean to burden you with my
problems", if you consider me a friend.

Golden Slumbers and Best Wishes,

Dear Drizabella,

Thank you so much for signing the petition! I think it was a fabulous
idea, and
I'm so glad that someone thought to do it.

You know, it's funny, but I never even thought of looking at the dream
in terms
of fiction. Maybe it really is this fight to save the Library seeping into my
sleep! Now that I look at it, I see a couple of others:

Asking someone to burn me up - why, that's The Cremation of Sam McGee, of
course, one of my favorite poems. You haven't lived until you've heard
someone
reciting Robert Service.

The governess with the monster in the attic - I think it's more likely that's
Jane Eyre, which I always preferred to The Turn of the Screw.

The boy who smelled like a swimming hole had to have been Tom Sawyer, who drew
that dreadful picture for Becky Thatcher. A lady to her core, she didn't
criticize his artwork, but rather praised his efforts. If only art critics
could learn a lesson from her.

Anyway, I've no idea what made me put that particular diverse cast of
characters
together in my head that night!

Thank you for giving my your instant messenger name. I don't think I have
anything like that installed on my computer, but if I do get it, your
name will
be added to my list first. Thank you for being my friend.

Yours,
Sarah

Mystes connected

After the solve from Sarah's dream, I sent an email to Sarah and Dale re: mystes.com.

I received this from Sarah....

Dear Drizabella,
What... on... earth! That is really strange. Once things settle down around here (and hopefully we won't have any more of those darned power glitches like we had on Monday!) and we win the Library fight (because we WILL win, we HAVE to!), I will sit down and think a little bit about this and see if I can make any sense of it. What on earth is that Mystes page about??
Yours,
Sarah

I don't know how to answer that question just yet. Smile
(I haven't heard back from Dale, but that's understandable.)
