Tips n Tricks

Those that watch IRC like a hawk will remember me asking how to create a search function in Firefox for our Perplex City wiki much like when 'dict (search)' is typed into the address bar, when you want to find out a words definition. Well, I found out how and it's so useful I thought I'd tell y'all:
  • Simply go to the wiki, and right click on the search dialogue box.
  • Select 'Add a Keyword for this Search...'
  • Fill in all the relevant details. I suggest 'pxc' for the keyword, but you can have whatever you find easiest.
Once that's done, next time you have to make a search, type 'pxc (and whatever your search is)' and away you go!

Also available to those enlightened by Firefox (and those still stuck in the IE age I think, now you mention it) is the ability to have a drop down menu on the toolbars at the top containing links to in-game sites, these boards and other useful resources. Simply make a folder in your favourites/bookmarks containing all those links you want to appear, and move the whole thing up into 'Toolbar Bookmarks Folder' (or the IE equivalent) right at the top of the list. It should then appear on the toolbar, ready for your click. The usefulness of having folders within folders should help keep it short as an added bonus.

Got any more tricks? Post 'em Smile

Also in Firefox (and I believe the same plugin is available for Mozilla and Netscape) is the little search box in the corner, where you can search Google and various other things just by typing in it and picking where you want to search.

Here's a plugin for that to search the PPC Wiki. Just unzip the attached file into the "searchplugins" directory in the directory that you installed Firefox (usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox in Windows). You'll need to restart Firefox for it to appear.

So not knowing what it was called and therefore not knowing how to search for it, I looked in to how to make a little firefox pulldown search thingy for the PXC Wiki. It took about an hour to figure it all out. Just before posting I thought I'd try to search for it just in case someone already made one. Sure enough they did. Still, the one previously posted is out of date so here is my attempt. Of course the old one can simply be edited with the new loc...

If anyone knows anything about these buggers, please look over my "code" and see if anything can be improved. Thanks.

Google Toolbar can add a search bar right onto any active browser window as well as onto your QuickLaunch menu thingy, so that you can search without launching a search engine page.

Wow, and exactly one year later, too!

I did actually update my own copy, but I never posted an updated one here.

We should really look into getting this hosted in the directory at http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ so that any future updates can be sent out automatically.

Nice work. It makes installing it easier too.
