Also, look at this:

Well this is all very interesting. So was this 'shipwreckmate' site created for the game? I ask because 1) a Google search turns up no other mention of this particular "Top 8 shipwreck" (though correct me if I'm wrong) and 2) the fact that the Black Rock sailed from "Slip 23"

So what else was on that page/site? If you go there now you'll notice that it's been temporarily taken down having exceeded its monthly bandwidth.

Also, I'm wondering if "Slip 23" might be a reference to the Chagos Archipeligo. I'm too tired to research this further, but take a look and see if this makes any sense. If you recall the global map from the hack where you had to enter the CIA Factbook numbers (for the US, Italy, and Sudan), you surely noticed the circle in the Indian Ocean. Well that circle surrounded the Chagos Archipeligo, a.k.a. "the oil islands." This theory is a stretch, but it relates to this post I found when doing a google search for "Chagos" and "Black Rock"...

Search Result:

Remember TPTB told us that 23 would be important? Well I looked up all the numbers on the grid.
4 - Mongolia
8 - Around Alberta. Canada
15 - Midway island
16 - NE of Hawaii
23 - Chagos Archipelago (British Indian Ocean Territoty) Indian Ocean***No one is there
42- Intersection Mid Indian & SW Indian Ridges

http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/asia/biot.htm No one is there, the people were moved out by the US in 1965. Just in time for Dharma to move in. It also seems to be in the right spot for the sunset to have happened the day of the crash. It puts Africa a lot closer. I'm liking this area more and more.

Also Diego Garcia...Hurley's brother. They also used the base at Diego Garcia to attack Afganistan in the Gulf war. I don't think the Losties are on Diego Garcia but on one of the islands in the area.

The island Diego Garcia is actually Chagos' main island. As for "Black Rock," it's unrelated to this clue but was simply talked about elsewhere on the page. Interestingly, I noticed from other search results that "Black Rock" is also an island east of the Falkland Islands near "South Georgia" (northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula).

Matt the Pale to the rescue:

http://members.aol.com/mattthepale/blackrock.mht

This is a direct save of the website in question.
You may have to dig out Internet Explorer, however, because the file is a multipurpose file for saving all types of media on a webpage to a single file. Sorry about that, but it was the fastest way to save the page AND upload it.

If you don't feel like opening it, here is the text from the website.

The Black Rock

This British(?) slave-trading vessel disappeared in 1881, on a return voyage from a gold mining operation in the South Indian Ocean. Perhaps more interesting than the fact the ship was lost were the circumstances preceding and following its disappearance. According to traders on Papua New Guinea, the ship sailed away from port in an Easterly direction, rather than West to Africa, where it would exchange gold from the mines in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea for more slaves. Furthermore, though a copy of the ship's manifest has been discovered - no accurate information is available on the ship's ownership. According to the manifest, The Black Rock initially sailed from (and was supposed to return to) slip 23 in Portsmouth, Britain -- but no shipping company claimed ownership. A crew of some 40 men, along with an uncounted number of slaves, was presumably lost at sea.

The television show Lost is based on "true" events and organizations, like Alvar Hanso, the DHARMA Initiative, etc. I wouldn't expect the producers of Lost to get it exactly the same as the "real" Black Rock.

[Spec]Perhaps the Lost writers knew of Hanso's connection to slave trading and wrote the disappearance of the Black Rock into the show. It could even be that the loss of the Black Rock will be how Hanso found the island in the first place. The ship crashes due to mysterious island, but maybe a handful of people get away and lead Hanso back to the island eventually.[\Spec]

It seems to me the key for understanding the relationship of the "real world" of the ARG to the fictional world of Lost is to realize it's a one way street - stuff from TLE about Hanso is "real stuff" the Lost writers knew about and put into the show. Therefore, it doesn't make sense to say a certain character on the show IS a certain character in TLE. It would make sense to say that Lost writers knew about a certain TLE character (who is "real") and based a show character on that person. Subtle, but important, distinction when looking at connections between Lost and TLE. And stuff like Persephone using certain phrases that appear on the show as clues can be explained by the fact that the fictional show airs in the real world of the game, and as the show is Hanso related Persephone would of course tie her clues in to the show because of the large audience she could expose to the truth about Hanso.

Sorry if no one cares about the above paragraph, I've been trying to bend my mind around real world of ARG v. fictional world of Lost ever since the Hugh interview and it just sort of crystallized for me.
EDIT: I have expanded on the META paragraph above here:

Can anyone figure out what the upper right flag is on the ship? It looks like neither the Union Jack nor the Danish national flag (which, under the category of learning something new every day, is referred to as the Dannebrog).

Probably not terribly relevant, but still an interesting difference.

Slightly more relevant, is it possible that the eight different categories of shipwrecks listed have more direct relevance to us? I'm not sure I see the general relevance of a site talking about these 8, while ignoring wrecks like the Mary Celeste or the Titanic.

*standing ovation*

I am so glad that you are thinking this way! That is exactly how the game is set up! We need to rember this as we play, and have to develop a bit of a time line of how and when the information we recive gets to us.

Looks like Mel and Rachel have a working relationship in place. This should be interesting.

EDIT: They're calling it Fake Rachel... I don't get that, she had a clickable name, and the numbers seemed to add up. What? Anyone?

I am always suspicious of posts entirely in binary, hex, etc. - it seems those are often shortcuts used by fakers who are trying to "ARG it up."

When Persephone uses ASCII it is generally short and focused, like a password. Not that we should entirely dismisses long "coded" posts, but they always raise a red flag for me.
