Yes I found the Madiera one it is...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

MADIERA - A scratched "5" beside the front door

The symbol I think you are talking about is on the barrel, correct? I always thought this was just an infinity symbol meant to clue you in to the fact that could be clicking down this hallway forever if you were so inclined. But, I have been wrong before. Could it be an 8? just turned on it's side?

Yes, yes it is. Extra bits do make up a set of numbers and do contain a compass letter. Work with me on this. So far we have ten sets of numbers, but not all of them had to be entered to take us to a place so I didn't think they counted, but if you did put numbers to the first two sets, Port Royal and Sargasso Sea, then at the point that the first letter comes would make perfect sense of it being the first part of a longitude/latitude, which would mean that we needed two numbers to go with the first two places and guess what, the map only has two...a No. 3 and 4, well I don't really know but worth looking into at least until we get to the 25th.

I could have sworn the first map always had the dice at 1 and 5 for the first few days. I kept reloading it and throwing the dice to see if they landed in other places. Once I started getting overlap, I realized that project was probably moot, but I'm sure they were always 1 and 5 before I touched them.

That flash file has clearly been updated over time, though, with the new trail line after each stage. Perhaps the first two numbers won't even be handed out until the last minute?

Right on... there was one piece of pottery not used in the plate challenge...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

TROPIC OF CANCER - An "N" on a piece of the plate that is not used.

Other Option

There is another option... that these are just clues to the puzzles that they are in.

When I first found the plate piece in Bermuda, I found it in the first hole I dug. Turns out there were the same number of possible holes as the number on the plate.

I just checked, and in Maderia to find the clickable barrel you have to go forward the number of times scratched by the door.

So these may not mean anything else... just something to keep in mind.

I am guessing, but I think the Kanji you are referring to could be a signature, of the guy that wrote that part perhaps?
An easter egg for his fame for all us who are looking so intently.
Because the serpents had me baffled for hours and hours.

This is just a guess but you all know what programmers are like.

Kanji

I don't think it is Kanji for Vessel
When I look that up, I find this, which doesn't look like it:
http://japanese.about.com/blkod475.htm

Part of me thinks it looks like the name KEITH on it's side... maybe a signature.

Looking at other Kanji, it could also be Kanji for Gold (Arrrg!) which has a similar bottom part, but not exactly the same:
http://japanese.about.com/blkanji9.htm

Or Treasure, which has the same top:
http://japanese.about.com/blkod983.htm

Does anyone know how Kanji works? Can you combine them to get something like Gold Treasure? or is Vessel really in there somewhere, like Treasure Chest?

blog on this topic

Have you all seen the blog on this topic?

http://pirateloot.blogspot.com/2006/06/little-things.html

He has a list with pictures and has looked up the "mysterious" symbol... although there are discussions as to it's accuracy.

mystery numbers

The only ones I've seen were already discussed here, but they don't, in their current form anyway, add up to valid coords - so perhaps the assessment about them being clues for 'that round' are accurate.

I thought the scratching on the outside of the door was a 4 (IIII) - not a 5?

Also, inside the cave, it looked to be a "7" to me...not a symbol.

I'd like to think that maybe the numbers refer to the page author (as someone already suggested).

Maybe 7 = Ronald Matthews, etc...

As for the number on the door indicating the number of barrels that you must pass, that's off - once I entered and it was the very first barrel - another time, I had to go one past the "lazy eight"...

In the constellations, I thought there was a 7 at the bottom right, but it later proved to be a Z (with a long bottom) that apparently allowed for at least one more stem... But there was also, what could appear to be an upside-down "9" in the sky. Perhaps a stretch - but how far are we to take it?
